 Manjira wildlife sanctuary, Medak

Area
----
The sanctuary is spread over an area of 20 sq. kms. in Medak district is at a distance of 50 kms. from Hyderabad. 

Flora
-----
The flora of the sanctuary is of riverine habitat. The sanctuary has extensive growth of Babul and Prosopis trees both on the islands and along the riverbanks interspersed with thick growth of lpomea. The commonly found water plants are Pistia, Hydrilla, Eichornia and Vallisneria.

Fauna
-----
The sanctuary is the abode for a number of resident and migratory birds in addition to being the home for Marsh Crocodile, better known as muggar.

Crocodile breeding
------------------
This program was started in the year 1975-76 for the rehabilitation of crocodiles. The visitors can view the crocodiles in two breeding ponds from a close range. 

Breeding and nesting spots
--------------------------
The sanctuary has nine small islands like Puttigadda, Bapangadda, Sangamgadda, Karnamgadda etc., which are the main breeding and nesting ground for the birds. The islands and the river banks have thick growth of Babul, Prosopis and lpomea which together make excellent nesting spots for the birds. 

Boating
-------
Three boats are in operation to take visitors around the sanctuary for bird watching. Binoculars, and books regarding bird identification are also available.

Film shows
----------
Films on nature and wildlife are shown every day on 16mm projector.

Environmental Education Center
-----------------------------
This center, with a museum, library and auditorium helps to educate visitors about nature conservation and maintenance of ecological balance. 

Conservation activities

Protecting the flora and fauna of the sanctuary.

 1) Keeping the water clean and pollution free. 
 2) Planting open patches on the islands and along the banks with Babul, etc., to create nesting sites for birds.
