2012-01-27 : 2012 Inter-department Cricket Match - CSE Team A is the final winner

We are glad to let you know that the CSE team A has won the inter-department cricket match. The final was held between our team and Hostel. The team has triumphed out of 32 teams that played against each other during last 3 weekends. The team was lead by Vinod Khanjore. The best bowler and best batsman award of the series went to our own team members, Wasim Chikode and Manoj Bodekar, respectively. The team was sponsored and managed by Sanjay Mistry.

2012-01-24 : Top two prizes at Microsoft Techvista 2012 from IIT Bombay

Karthik Ramachandra (Ph.D. student with Prof. Sudarshan) and Rijurekha Sen (Ph.D. student with Prof. Bhaskar) won the first and second prizes respectively at the Microsoft Techvista 2012 Ph.D. poster session. Virtualization technology enabled cloud computing has been making rapid strides in provisioning, usage and management of large-scale systems. As popularity and applications of these techniques increase, there is increasing interest in the area, both from the academic research community and the industry.

As part of this workshop (WIVCC-2012) at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, we aim to bring together different research communities (involving student/faculty/industry) to discuss/present a set of interesting directions in this area. A couple of keynote talks and a set of student-talks will cover the overall problem area and research on specific problem instances. The idea is to expose student and faculty community to both broad and specific aspects of the research directions. The event will also provide a platform for interactions and discussions between people involved in cloud computing research.

2011-11-21 : FIRE 2011: Workshop on IR Evaluation to be held at IIT Bombay, Dec 2-4, 2011

The Forum for Information Retrieval Evaluation (FIRE) was set up in 2007 to evaluate IR in Indian languages. The annual conference of this forum will be held at IIT Bombay on 2-4 Dec, 2011.

13 invited speakers from all over the world, who are experts in the field of IR will address the delegates in this event. The delegates are from leading search industries like Microsoft, Google, HP Labs, Xerox etc. and also from academia and the Ministry of IT.

2011-11-16 : FSTTCS 2011 at IIT Bombay from Dec 12-14, 2011

The 31st Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS) conference will be held in IIT Bombay from Dec 12-14, 2011.

The technical program of the conference includes 37 technical papers and six invited talks. Invited talks will be given by Susanne Albers, Phokion Kolaitis, John Mitchell, Madhu Sudan, Moshe Vardi and Umesh Vazirani. There will be two co-located events: a pre-conference workshop (Dec 10-11, 2011) on Finite and Algorithmic Model Theory, and a post-conference workshop (Dec 15-16, 2011) on Breakthroughs in Theoretical Computer Science. Karthik Ramachandra, a Ph.D student with Prof. S. Sudarshan, is among the five MSR India Ph.D. Fellows for 2011. Karthik is also among the 22 PhD students chosen internationally for the Yahoo! KSC program award.

2011-05-12 : Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya to be area chair for Semantics in International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing 2011.

International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing is a flagship event for reporting research in NLP. This year's conference, IJCNLP 2011, will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand on Nov 8-15, 2011. The area of semantics which is concerned with research on processing and representation of meaning will be chaired by Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya.

2011-05-06 : Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya to deliver keynote address at the IJCNLP 2011 workshop on NLP of Asian Languages.

International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing is a flagship event in NLP, focusing on Asian Languages. This year's IJCNLP will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand in November, 2011.

The IJCNLP 2011 workshop on South and South Asian Languages NLP (WSSANLP) concentrates on complex morpho-syntactic phenomena crucial for NLP of these languages.

Prof.Pushpak Bhattacharyya will deliver the keynote address titled Unsupervised Learning of Morphology in the above workshop.

At 52nd Foundation Day celebration of IIT Bombay, the H. H. 2010-11-11 : Natural Language Processing group of CSE Dept. to organize the Indowordnet workshop.

A one day workshop covering the foundations and applications of Indian language wordnets will be held on 8th December, 2010 at IIT Kharagpur. The event is organized by the NLP group of CSE Department, IIT Bombay and is collocated with International Conference on Natural Language Processing (ICON 2010 ).

2010-11-11 : Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya to deliver the keynote address at the International Conference on NLP (ICON 2010).

ICON is the flagship Conference on Natural Language Processing held every year in India. The keynote speech by Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya will explore the relationship between the fields of NLP and IR both of which deal with text, with special attention to sense disambiguation and information retrieval.

2010-09-12 : Department welcomes new faculty member, Nutan Limaye.

Nutan Limaye joins the department as an Assistant Professor. Her research interests include algorithms and complexity theory and in particular, small space algorithms and circuit complexity. She graduated from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai and before joining IITB was a Visiting Fellow at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, TIFR .

2010-07-05 : Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya appointed Associate Editor of ACM Transaction on Asian Language Information Processing

The journal ACM Transaction on Asian Language Information Processing (TALIP) is a prestigious forum for reporting research on Natural Language Processing, with emphasis on languages of Asia spoken by more than half the humanity.

Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya has been appointed Associate Editor of this important forum for the period July 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011.

2010-05-08 : Workshop on Essential Abstractions in GCC, 5th--8th July 2010.

GCC Resource center plans to conduct its annual workshop on Essential Abstractions in GCC from Monday 5th July to Thursday 8 July 2010. 2009-12-24 : Manthan Award for 2009 for Hindi Wordnet

Hindi Wordnet- which forms the foundation for multilingual dictionary and WSD and Indowordnet and a workof 24 man years- has been conferred Manthan Award 2009, the South Asia award for best practices in ICT for Development.

The award- instituted by Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and Digital Empowerment Foundation, India- has been conferred since 2003 on efforts that advance the cause of digital empowerment. Nominations are received from all over South Asia. This year there were close to 400 nominations in different categories like e-governance, e-learning, e-localization etc. 45 amongst these received the award this year. The award ceremony took place on 19/12/2009 in NCUI Auditorium, Siri fort Area, New Delhi. Mr. Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology was present. For Hindi wordnet, the award citation observed that Hindi Wordnet and Associated Software developed at IIT Bombay under the supervision of Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya by a team consisting of Prabhakar Pande, Laxmi Kashyap, Dipak Narayan, Debasri Chakrabarty Akshay Uke and many past researchers and students has led to digital empowerment for Indian languages. One of the important developments based on the Hindi wordnet is the set of other language wordnets. Marathi wordnet is already quite mature and we hope make it download ready in about a year. Sanskrit wordnet work is continuing with its additional depth and challenges. Besides these, work on North East wordnets, Dravidian wordnets and Indradhanush wordnets (Punjabi, Oriya, Gujarati, Bangla and Konkani) have started/starting. Fifth International Global wordnet conference to be held at IIT Bombay will see many of these efforts presented.

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), IIT Bombay, and Department of Computer Science, University of Minnesota, USA under the Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) have planned a 3-day workshop on "Geospatial information for developing countries: Science and Technology" to discuss state-of-art in GIS technologies, understand the challenges in applying them to problems in developing nations, and set future research directions.

2009-12-03 : 5th International Conference on Global Wordnet to be held at IIT Bombay, Jan 31-Feb 4, 2010.

Global Wordnet Conferences are biennial events that see researchers of NLP- especially ontology, lexicon, disambiguation and translation- gather for deliberations on latest findings. After its occurrences in Europe last several times, the conference has come to India, due to IIT Bombay's prominence in NLP research (www.cfilt.iitb.ac.in).

2009-07-23 : Prof. Pushpak Bhattachrayya is office bearer in top NLP event: Joint Workshop Chair in ACL2010 .

ACLs (annual meetings of the Association for Computational Linguistics) are top fora for reporting research findings in Natural Language Processing, Information Extraction and Information Retrieval. Workshops are important satellite events for top conferences, which focus of specific themes. ACL2010 will be held in Uppsala, Sweden, July 11-16. About 8-10 workshops are expected to be organized as part of the conference. Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya will oversee this along with Prof. David Weir of University of Sussex.

International Conference on Artificial Inetlligence (IJCAI) is the topmost forum for reporting research in AI. Similarly for Natural Language Processing (NLP), Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) conference is the highest forum.

2009-02-14 : CAN Workshop under the aegis of Embedded Real-Time Systems (ERTS) Lab

CANBUS is an increasingly popular bus protocol which is fast emerging out of the factory automation domain and appearing in the automobile domain, embedded in variety of machines and now also in the aerospace industry. CANOpen provides standardized software development methods and profiles. Systematic standards help the user to integrate different manufacturers devices in project and help keep costs down through standard profiles for a variety of application domains.

2008-12-17 : 14th International Conference on Management of Data (COMAD) 2008. Date: 17-19 December 2008.

For over a decade and a half, the COMAD Intl. Conf. on Management of Data, modeled along the lines of ACM SIGMOD, has been the premier international database conference hosted in India. The first COMAD was held in 1989, and it has been held on a nearly annual basis since then (except for a few breaks such as in the years when VLDB and ICDE were held in India). COMAD has always had a significant international participation, with about 30% of the papers being from outside India, including Europe, USA and East/South-East Asia.

The 14th COMAD will be held from December 17-19, 2008, at IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai, India. Similar to previous years, COMAD 2008 's scope will include not only traditional database areas but also add emphasis on Web, Information Retrieval and Data Mining.

Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya will deliver a keynote address on "Natural Language Processing and Indian Language Wordnets" in the Asian Language Resources Summit to be held on December 9-11, in Phuket, Thailand.

Wordnets and Ontologies are crucial for large scale system building for Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Text based Applications including IE and IR. IIT Bombay created the first wordnet for Indian languages in the form of Hindi Wordnet (www.cfilt.iitb.ac.in/wordnet/webhwn). Other languages of India also are building this crucial language resource under the leadership of IIT Bombay. Asian Language Summit (ALRS) is a major NLP event bringing together NLP researchers from China, Japan, Korea and other Asian countries. One of the major objectives of the summit is to explore avenues for the creation of giant and linked language knowledge structures. ALRS08 will have as its agenda how the Indowordnet can link with other Asian language lexical resources.

2008-08-05 : Two day workshop by Yahoo on Hadoop on August 9-10, 2008.

A two day workshop by Yahoo on Hadoop will be held on August 9-10 , 2008 at the F.C.Kohli Auditorium, Rekhi Building, IIT Bombay.

This workshop will address issues designers and programmers need to consider in developing applications in Hadoop. Hadoop is a framework for running applications on large clusters built of commodity hardware. It is primarily a MapReduce implementation, running on a distributed file system. The objective of the workshop is to help participants, build an understanding of important concepts, and provide opportunities to practice with them.

Day 1: Hadoop basics (running on a single node, running on multiple nodes, writing simple MapReduce programs, running, debugging Hadoop apps).

2008-07-28 : GCC Resource Center of CSE Dept. releases its website.

GCC Resrouce Center has been established in Jan 2008 to step up the activities related to the Gnu Compiler Collection in IIT Bombay. Its website (http://www.cse.iitb.ac.in/grc) contains a lot of useful information for people interested in studying GCC Internals or trying to port GCC to a new target. The documentation provided on the web site tries to bridge the gap between the conceptual structure of a compiler discussed in standard compiler construction courses and the actual implementation GCC which is an industry strength compiler generation framework.

2008-05-10 : Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya appointed chairman of the committee monitoring progress of Language Technology Projects in the North East funded by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, India.

Department of Information Technology under the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India, has funded large scale language technology projects in the North East to develop resources and tools for the languages in the region. Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya is the chairman of the project review and steering group (PRSG) which will monitor the progress of these projects for a period of 24 months.

2008-02-14 : Convergence '08 : Convergence'08 is a two day research-exposure workshop that will focus on current research activities in the area of virtualization. It will be held on 15-16 March, 2008.

2008-01-20 : Three day workshop on Natural Language Processing held at CFILT on 16-18 Januray, 2008 with participation from NLP groups of Chalmers University (Sweden) and CSE Department, IIT Bombay.

A three day workshop on Natural Language Processing (NLP) was held at the Center for Indian Language Technology (CFILT), CSE Department, IIT Bombay on 16-18 January, 2008. There were presentations by the NLP groups of Chalmers University, Sweden and of IIT Bombay, led respectively by Prof. K. Prasad and Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya. The former group primarily spoke of their long standing work on Grammatical Formalism, an old framework of NLP, based on functinal programming. The IITB team presented their multi-facted work on semantics, shallow parsing, cross lingual search, wordnets etc. Both the groups will explore possibilities of focussed joint work on NLP.

The Euro-India ICT Co-operation Initiative is funded by the European Union (EU) with the objective of enhancing collaborative research activities between the European Union (EU) and India.

This Workshop is taking place with the support of the Department of IT, Government of India and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. It will offer Indian participants from academia, research and industry a one-stop-shop to understand how they can pursue their research interests and projects in an EU-India collaborative format and benefit from the substantial R&D outlay of the European Union.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the European Union’s Framework Programme 7 (2007–2013) for Research & Innovation, with particular focus on the ICT segment, its thematic priorities, instruments, funding options and project selection criteria and process. India specific initiatives and focus will also be presented.

During the Workshop, Experts from both India and Europe will share their know-how, EU-funded project experience and explain the ins-and-outs of EU research projects with practical information on how to get involved as an Indian participant and make the most out of it.

It is the responsibility of the area chairs to ensure the number and quality of research papers accepted in an area. Of late, language resources (LR) have received a great deal of attention since no practical and significant NLP system can be built without LRs.

Prof. Bhaskaran Raman received his B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in May 1997. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of California, Berkeley, in 1999 and 2002 respectively. He was a faculty in the CSE department at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur from June 2003 to June 2007. His research interests and expertise are in communication networks (especially for rural use), wireless/mobile networks, large-scale Internet-based systems, and Internet middleware services.

Prof. Kameswari Chebrolu's research interests are in the areas of wireless network architecture, protocol design and analysis. She is specifically interested in technology for developing regions. Prof. Chebrolu obtained her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of California at San Diego (in 2001 and 2004 respectively). Prior to joining IIT Bombay, Prof. Chebrolu was faculty at the Electrical Engineering department of IIT Kanpur.

Prof. Bharat Adsul research interests are in the areas Concurrency (Automata, Logics, Games), Formal Methods (Verification), Representation Theory and related Geometry and Applied Geometry. Prior to joining us, he was a Fellow at the Chennai Mathematical Institute (2003-07). He received his B. Tech and Ph.D. from IIT Bombay in 1997 and 2003, respectively.

2007-08-06 : Prabhat, an initiative for spreading awareness towards Linux and Open Source Movement, is organizing a two-day workshop (18th and 19th August, 2007) aimed at introducing the basic fundamentals of Linux.

We at CSE, via this workshop, aim at providing a glimpse of world of linux and a flavor of the possibilities that lie within. The target audience of this workshop is the IITB student community who have little or no knowledge of Linux. 2007-04-27 : Natural Language Processing Group has made the Hindi Wordnet (semantically linked 26000 synsets and about 58000 words), a crucial resource for NLP involving Indian Languages, freely downloadable from here.

The Natural Language Processing Group of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, IIT Bombay has developed the Hindi Wordnet which is a crucial resource for NLP involving Indian Languages. The resource follows the Princeton Wordnet's design, but incorporates Hindi specific features. There are more than 25000 synsets and about 58000 words in the lexical database. Synsets are linked with all conventional lexical and semantic relations as well as some Hindi specific relations.

This resource is in great demand and it can be freely downloaded for research purposes from here.

AAYAAM-07, a national level technical symposium on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Semantic Web. AAYAAM-07 is a three day event to be held from March 16-18, 2007 through the Continuing Education Programme (CEP), IIT Bombay. 2007-01-24 : Anand, research scholar in the CSE Department working on Machine Translation, won the second prize (Rs 50000) in Techvista - the annual flagship event of Microsoft Research India- held at IISc Bangalore. Read the research paper here.

Microsoft Research India held its annual flagship event TechVista on 23rd January 2007 at IISc, Bangalore - a one day research symposium featuring some of the best known scientists and researchers from across the world as speakers. It had an audience of more than 750 people from across the country, consisting of senior researchers, scientists, professors, students and industry, as well as representatives from the government. TechVista 2007 had an exhibition to showcase the PhD research done at leading educational institutions across India in the form of posters or demos. Senior Microsoft Research executives and select delegates evaluated the exhibited projects and top two projects were given awards. 2006-09-01 : Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya has been inducted as a member of the Language Development Committee formed by the Planning Commission. The committee will be responsible for policy formulation on Language Technology in the context of the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-2012).

Responding to the tremendous growth of language technology and its immense relevance to Indian context- as triggered by advancements in the internet- the planning commission has felt the need for policy formulation and concerted action on language technology. These involve the following: (1)Study of Present Status and Challenges in LT, (2) Suggest measures for utilization of modern computer and communication technologies in this area (3) Examine critically the resource requirement and measures for involving community and NGOs (4) Courses in language technology training (5) Public-private partnership for developing new tools for language technology. �The committee will submit a report to the commission after a series of meetings and deliberations starting from September.

2006-04-20 : Symposium on Modeling and Shallow Parsing of Indian Languages organized by CFILT jointly with CIIL Mysore and C-DAC India to be held in IIT Bombay.

The "First National Symposium on Modeling and Shallow Parsing of Indian Languages" will be held from 31st March to 4th April, 2006 at IIT Bombay. It is organized by CFILT jointly with CIIL Mysore and C-DAC India. The event is motivated by the international trend of going deeper and deeper in shallow processing of natural languages, and the fact that Indian languages show unique and richly complex behavior in morphology, word-order, compounding, etc.

Already, Eminent researchers have shown great interest in the event. They will deliver invited speeches, and are from both academia and industry (IITs, IISc, TIFR, IIIT, DIT, CIIL, JNU, DU, CIEFL, HCU, Google, Microsoft Research, IBM Research, etc.). Students and researchers from 40 institutes across the country including 5 universities from the neighboring countries will present focused papers and demos. As part of the Symposium, a panel discussion will be conducted to chart out the course of action in Indian Language Processing in the coming years.
