The department consists of 36 faculty members, 80 PhD. students, 200 M.Tech. students, 168 undergraduates and 25 office staff members. Three new faculty members joined the department this year: Prof. Kameswari Chebrolu, Prof. Bhaskaran Raman and Prof. Bharat Adsul.
Students and faculty members of the department participated and initiated several research projects, organized workshops and conferences, won several awards and established new collaborations between IIT Bombay and other educational and research institutes. As a result of the year round research and teaching efforts, faculty have published 4 books and, along with students and collaborators, published over 70 manuscripts in national and international journals, conferences and workshops.
Twenty students of the department received fellowship support from various companies and individual grants. Four students, Ms. Shruti Prakash Mahambre, Ms. Shetal Shah, Ms. Uma Sawant and Ms. Neha Singh, were among the 16 winners of the first Google India women in Engineering Award. Ashish Tendulkar won the Outstanding Research Scholar Award in Engineering given by Research Scholars' Forum, IIT Bombay. Students and faculty of the department also won awards at several conferences and events.
