Syllabus

The course will be based on the book

A Course in Combinatorics by J. H. van Lint and R. M. Wilson.
The course will cover a breadth of topics in Combinatorics excluding graph theory. A separate course may be offered on graph theory next semester. Some of the topics to be covered are
  • Ramsey Theory
  • Extremal Set Theory
  • Combinatorial Enumeration
  • Combinatorial Designs
  • Codes
There is no formal pre-requisite or background required, but some mathematical maturity may be required. The aim of the course is to develop the ability to work with abstract finite structures of various types and to prove their properties.

Books

  • J. H. van Lint and R. M. Wilson, A Course in Combinatorics, 2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, 2001.
  • An Indian reprint of this book is available. There are separate books on each of the topics to be covered. These will be pointed out later.

Newsgroup/Mailing list

A mailing list cs604[at]cse and a newsgroup iitb.courses.cs604 have been set up. Students crediting the course are encouraged to subscribe to these. Please use the newsgroup for discussions. The mailing list will be used (mostly by instructor/TAs) for announcements.
