Welcome to Introduction to Communication Networks Course (CS 716).

Course Contents

This is an Introduction to communication networks, offered as an Institute elective by CSE dept.
The course is meant for non-CSE, non-ECE, PG students. CSE/ECE PG students should take CS 653 or CS 641. UG students should take CS 348.

Technical topics: Internet, TCP/IP, WiFi, GSM, etc.

The course will not go into much excruciating details of various technologies; It will not be too top-level either. The course will focus on concepts that are 'broadly useful', in networking and elsewhere. Mostly we will try to understand: “How does X work?”, with emphasis on “Why is X designed this way?”

The course is in Slot 6 : Wed- 11:00 to 12:30, Friday - 11:00 to 12:30, in Room (SH) CSE Seminar Hall

Grading and Weightages

The course will have:
2 Quizzes - 20%
N Assignments - 10%
1 Midsem exam - 30%
1 Endsem exam - 40%

Attendance Policy

I may sometimes take attendance in class to:
  • Get to know your names.
  • Give consideration to borderline cases during grading.
  • Encourage you to be on time. If you walk in after I have called your name, you will be marked *absent*. :-)
