IC 102 Data Analysis and Interpretation

The textbook we will use is "Introduction to Probability and Statistics to Engineers and Scientists", by Sheldon M. Ross, 3rd edition (Indian).

We will cover:

  • Chapter 1 Introduction to Statistics
  • Chapter 2 Descriptive Statistics
  • Chapter 9 Regression-only 9.1-9.3 and additional topics
  • Chapter 3 Elements of Probability
  • Chapter 4 Random Variables and Expectations
  • Chapter 5 Special Random Variables- skipping 5.3, 5.7, 5.9
  • Also 11.6 Goodness of fit: The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test
  • Chapter 6 Distributions of Sampling Statistics
  • Chapter 7 Parameter Estimation- only 7.1-7.3 and some topics from other sections
  • Chapter 8 Hypothesis testing -only 8.1-8.3, 8.5

    We will also cover Scilab programming of some of the statistical procedures and real-life research examples.
