Maintenance and Running of Hospitals – 2004-2005

The very purpose of this Institute's existence is to provide medical service to the economically challenged citizens of this area. Not contented at that, we also strive to tap the best technology in medical field and make it accessible and affordable to them. This Institute has no financial grants from Government nor from any Corporate body. The Institute owes its survival for the last 103 years and its slow but steady development into a multispecialty stature to the generosity and a genuine feeling of togetherness with the poor of this locality of many kind donors in India and abroad who responded to our fervent appeals.

Hurdles being felt
This Institute is entirely dependent on the interest income from deposits in banks for its recurring expenditure incurred on salaries for doctors, medicine, food and for a myriad of other things required in running a hospital. Since this hospital is meant for serving the poor, in more than 90% of cases the treatment, which includes giving food, medicines, diagnosis etc is done without any charge. The banks and financial institutions have been reducing the interest rates every year and the patient population is increasing by leaps and bounds which has been pushing us towards an unpleasant imbalance or situation.

On one side the increasing patient population is further widening the constituency of ailments this hospital is currently coping with which is raising sharply the importance and need of sophisticated diagnostic tools like C T Scan and life saving systems such as Dialysis Unit and Blood Bank [ in progress ]. On the other side, T.B. is rampantly on increase in India and particularly in this area. Since the very early time, this Institute has taken up the treatment of T.B. victims without any charge who were otherwise left to live a heart-rending and pitiable life. As mentioned in this Ashram's T.B. Report [link to tbproject.doc], it costs Rs.6710 [ US$149 ] for Institute to treat one T.B. patient completely. With the rapidly swelling number of T.B. patients coming to this Institute for treatment, the expenditure too is on steep rise, which the report explains.

The purpose of this website is to reach more and more intelligentia across the globe and seek their kind audience for cooperation to and participation in this age old Institute in providing it a financial stability and assistance to withstand the dwindling interest rates and expand the spectrum of medical services respectively.
Appended below are a few graphical views of expenditure incurred and rapidly growing patient population for the last four years [i.e. 2001-02 to 2004-05] .
  • It has treated 96,82,314 patients, during last one hundred years, without making any distinction of caste, creed or nationality
  • Majority of patients come from nearby villages and are too poor to pay the hospital charges. A good number of this category can not even buy medicines, let alone hospital charges. Therefore , the treatment is provided free for these people.
  • The ultra-modern lab, X-ray, Sonography etc.facilities are available to do all kinds of tests, if required to be done for any patient. Once admitted the patient are his/her companions need not take trouble to go out for these tests.
  • In addition to the treatment, the poor patients admitted in the hospital are provided food three times a day along with milk from the dairy inside the Sevashram free of cost.
  • To take the hospital to the doors of villagers who just can not afford to come to Sevashram, Sevashram runs a moble hospital, started in 1972, to nurse and serve them. If the condition demands, the patients are brought to the hospital for treatment.
  • A medical shop was opened in 2000-01 to provide medicines and dressings to poor patients at a rock bottom price.
