Indoor Environmental Institute The neutrality of this article is disputed . Please see the discussion on the talk page . Indoor Environmental Institute ( IEI ) was created as a non-profit corporation to promote and further the indoor environmental quality ( IEQ ) industry through : ( i ) creating guidelines and best practices documents for persons engaged in the detection , prevention and mitigation of indoor environmental quality problems ; ( ii ) educating the general public , policy makers , the media and the industry about the need for healthy indoor environments ; and , ( iii ) developing consensus positions within the indoor environmental quality industry and related industries on indoor environmental quality issues . A primary objective will be to fill the need for a certification that will aid the public in selecting knowledgeable and experienced indoor environmental consultants to : competently evaluate indoor environmental conditions across the spectrum of public , commercial , and residential buildings , adequately prescribe the methods and procedures to remediate , control and prevent adverse indoor environmental incidents , and comprehensively address microbial contamination issues . _______________________________________________ Indoor environmental quality ( IEQ ) is based on the philosophy that architectural /mechanical design is not about conditioning buildings but rather it is about conditioning people . The basis for its success is this simple formula : IAQ + ICQ = IEQ IAQ , Indoor Air Quality ICQ , Indoor Comfort Quality IAQ is well documented and substantiated within the building industry , however ICQ is not . ICQ is based on ASHRAE Standard 55 , Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy and its European equivalent ISO 7730 . To satisfy the terms of the equation , designers of structure and space must understand human physiology and the neurosciences to create environments , which satisfy the human body’s natural response to discomfort .
