The Scottish Premier League (SPL) is the top division within the current structure of football in Scotland. Currently, the full sponsored name of the league is the Bank of Scotland Scottish Premierleague. UEFA currently rank the league 10th in Europe. The current Champions of Scotland and holders of the SPL title are Celtic F.C.

History
Previously, the Scottish Football League had a two divisional structure (Divisions One and Two) between which clubs were promoted and relegated at the end of each season. However, by the mid 1970s, this organisation was perceived to be stagnant, and it was decided to split into a three divisional structure (Premier Division, First Division and Second Division).

This setup continued until the mid-1990s when it was decided to split into a four divisional structure with the addition of a Third Division.

Promotion and relegation
Providing they meet certain criteria regarding their stadium, the top club from the Scottish First Division is promoted to the SPL, with the 12th-placed SPL club relegated.

In 2003, the league's promotion criteria caused controversy as the chairmen of the member clubs voted against Falkirk's proposed ground share with Airdrie United and stopped the club from having the 10,000 fan stadium capacity it required, thus saving Motherwell from relegation.
The same situation nearly materialised in 2004, but after several votes and discussion, including threats of court cases from Partick Thistle, the team then threatened with prospect of relegation, Inverness Caledonian Thistle were finally allowed promotion provided that they groundshared with north rivals Aberdeen at Pittodrie, a ground over 160 km (100 miles) away. In 2005, the stadium size criterion for entry to the SPL was reduced to 6,000, thereby allowing Inverness Caledonian Thistle to return to their home stadium partway during the season.

Media coverage
Irish broadcasting firm Setanta Sports currently hold the rights to broadcast televised live and exclusive Scottish Premier League games. Setanta won the rights in 2004 and began broadcasting in season 2004-05. The rights were previously owned by Sky Sports and BBC Scotland. STV's Scotsport currently own the rights to broadcast highlights of each game. Radio broadcasting rights are held by BBC Radio Scotland, who also own internet broadcasting rights of all matches to online listeners.
Aberdeen Football Club is a football team from Scotland, who compete in the Scottish Premier League.

Formed in 1903 from the amalgamation of a number of clubs from Aberdeen, they have been one of the top clubs in Scotland. Alex Ferguson was a highly successful manager of the team in the 1980s, guiding them to three league championships, and famously to victory in the 1983 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, defeating Real Madrid in the final.

Aberdeen play at Pittodrie, which has a capacity of 22,199 and was the first all-seater and all-covered stadium in the UK. Aberdeen were also the first team to introduce the 'dug-out'
Celtic Football Club (pronounced "seltik" in IPA) AIM: CCP is a Scottish football club, competing in the Scottish Premier League, the highest form of competition in Scotland. The club is based in the east end of the city of Glasgow.

The club is officially nicknamed the Bhoys. The full name of the club is The Celtic Football Club, though it is sometimes called Glasgow Celtic or Celtic Glasgow, particularly by foreign commentators. Until 1994, when it became a public company, the club was The Celtic Football & Athletic Company Ltd.

Celtic play home games at Celtic Park, which is currently the second largest club stadium in the United Kingdom and was until the expansion of Old Trafford in recent years the largest in the UK. In 2005-06, Celtic Park attracted an average attendance of 58,149 , making Celtic second only to Manchester United in average attendance for any British football club.

Together with their rivals, Rangers F.C., they form the Old Firm which is one of the most famous and fiercest rivalries in sport. The club has traditionally been identified with the Catholic community of Glasgow and has strong support from the Catholic population of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Celtic's home kit is green and white hooped jerseys, white shorts and white socks.

In 1967, Celtic became the first Northern European team to win to win the European Cup, which had previously been the preserve of Italian, Portuguese and Spanish clubs. Celtic won every competition that they entered that season: Scottish League, Scottish FA Cup, Scottish League Cup, European Cup and the Glasgow Cup.
Dundee United Football Club is a Scottish football club located in Dundee. Officially, United are nicknamed The Terrors and the supporters known as The Arabs, though the latter term has been applied equally to the club in recent times by the sporting media. The Tangerines is another term used to describe the club.

United currently play in the Scottish Premier League and have been managed by Craig Levein since late October 2006. Eddie Thompson, chairman since September 2002, is the majority shareholder of Dundee United, whilst the supporters, under the guise of ArabTRUST, own the second majority. In 2005-06, Tannadice attracted an average attendance of 8,197, the sixth-highest average in the SPL.

In European competition, United are Scotland's third most experienced team, having played 104 matches (five more than Aberdeen) over 22 seasons in Europe. During the club's many European competition runs in the late 20th century, English-based media sometimes incorrectly called the team Dundee - the name of their city rivals. This still occasionally happens today.
Rangers Football Club is a football club from Glasgow, Scotland, which plays in the Scottish Premier League. Rangers are the most successful club in Scottish football, with 51 league titles, and have won the most trophies of any football club in the world.

The club's home, the all-seated 51,082-capacity in south-west Glasgow, has been accredited as one of UEFA's five-star stadia.
The club has traditionally been identified with the Protestant Unionist community of Scotland. For most of their history, Rangers have enjoyed a fierce rivalry with their cross-city opponents Celtic F.C.

The club is nicknamed Rangers FC, from the shite that big eck spouted and the fans are known to each other as 'Bluenoses'. The club's correct name is simply Rangers F.C. although it is sometimes incorrectly called Glasgow Rangers. This frequently happens with English commentators seeking to distinguish between them and other similarly-named clubs, particularly Queens Park Rangers F.C. This naming convention is also popular in Europe and further afield, where any club without its location in its name receives it as a prefix or suffix, for example Red Star Belgrade.

Rangers are the most honoured football club in the world having won 107 trophies in total.
Saint Mirren Football Club (usually referred to simply as St. Mirren, or by the nicknames The Buddies - a nickname for people from Paisley from "Paisley Bodies" or The Saints - for obvious reasons) are a Scottish football club based in the town of Paisley, Renfrewshire. The team is named after the Irish monk Saint Mirin who is the patron saint of Paisley and is said to have founded the town's Abbey. They currently play in the Scottish Premier League (season 2006-07) having gained promotion from the First Division in 2005-06.

St. Mirren are managed by Gus MacPherson and the main sponsors are currently Braehead, a local shopping centre located in Renfrewshire close to the border of the City of Glasgow.

The club are currently enjoying their return to top-flight football in Scotland, the first time the club has been in the Scottish Premier League since 2001
Edit - Hopefully everyone is ok with me posting the above. Some cynical bastard has red repped me as he deems that I have just copied and pasted the above from somewhere else. The Pics were made by myself, that size with border and the rest came from a variety of sources, wikipedia, SPL, etc.
Anyway onto some discussion, Hapoel Tel Aviv vs. Rangers tonight in the UEFA Cup. Any predictions?

Blaze

02-14-2007, 02:46 PM

Rangers will probably be in the last 16, probably not further then that.

Celtic have a hard tie next week against Milan. Though if Nakamura and Hesslelink are on form, they should be able to put up a good fight

Bigell

02-14-2007, 02:51 PM

Rangers to go through and beat Sp*rs in the last 16...

I'll ask the same question as I did in the other thread

Anyone think McCleish will do as good as job as Smith?

Monzon

02-14-2007, 03:54 PM

Nope Bigelll, I for one don't think so and I can already see the bitching now. ''If Rangers hadn't of stole Smith we would have qualified.'' Possibly yes but you just have to move on. With a bit of luck who knows but I doubt Big Eck will do anything special.

Hapoel Tel Aviv 1 Rangers 0, current half time score.

Really sloppy defending for their second goal and Tel Aviv didn't look great shakes. Nor do we however but we should proceed to the next round with a win a confortable win at Ibrox.
