we need to start a similar campaign to educate the casual/bandwagoner fan. This forum is a great place to start. Most, if not all, the members on this board already know the rules of cheering. However, the members on this board probably only represent a third of fans that are at the Q.

Maybe we need to email Mighty XX and Rock 105.3 to help jump start the education of cheering edicate! Maybe Joelbolt can tell the folks at the charger front office to start some kind of anouncment on the various tv and radio stations?
With homefield advantage right in front of us. we need to know how to shut the hell up on offense and get loud on every play on defense! not just on 3rd down, and especially when the other team is in the huddle trying to call their play.
So take this thread and tell your friends. we all need to do our part to help our chargers go to miami! screw the 12th man. we are the 67,000th man!

I don't think there are 22,000 plus fans in this board. No way is a third represented here. I think the team will need to deal with education of the fans if they think it is necesary. The jumbotron is the best way to do that.

You're right. Another way would be the guy who controls the scoreboard to "bring the noise" more consistently for the "new" fans. It's way too far in between. Kind of like Laker games, Charger games are starting to be afforded to the more fortunate (cash money y'all), so less "die hards" can afford to show up.

Too bad the jumbotron and its operator suck. The announcer needs to make a comment such as "the Cardinals are entering the huddle" (like he did when Gnats played here, "Eli Manning at Quarterback"... that got everyone making noise). And, of course, announcing to be quiet when the Chargers are in the huddle and calling audibles.

From Wikipedia:

Allen was intimately involved in the stadium design. He rejected plans for a retractable roof, and directed the architects to minimize the stadium footprint as much as possible to bring fans closer to the action. Also, he had the architects design the structure of the stadium, especially the roof, to direct as much crowd noise as possible on the field. In addition, the north end zone seating, called the "Hawks Nest", was specifically designed for rowdy fans; the seating consists of metal bleachers which reflect sound, and fans often stomp to create even more. Qwest Field has since earned a reputation as arguably the loudest stadium in the NFL. During the 2005 season, more penalties for false starts were called against visiting teams in Qwest Field than in any other NFL stadium. At one point during the 2006 season, the New York Giants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Giants) complained that Qwest Field was artificially piping in noise in order to distract visiting quarterbacks from running a count. During the 2005 NFC Championship Game against the Carolina Panthers, the decibel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decibel) level recorded by Fox reached 137db.
My point is that we can make all the noise we want, but we won't be able to duplicate the scientifically-assisted decibel level of Qwest.
But do it anyway.

This would be a great topic for "Leitner Strikes" on channel 8. LOL!!!
The next time I see the Jumbotron/DiamondVision display "QUIET" across the screen would be the first time. I've NEVER seen that done at any football game. I'm curious if any team - pro or college - actually does this. Let the Bolt management know if so.
he tries to get people to yell sooner to no avail....props to you Jake Jr.
Agreed. It has been very loud lately but can be louder. Ive tried to sit in as many sections as I can to gauge the fans. People are still sitting on their hands in some sections and waiting for an offensive play to make noise. Others I have been told to sit down on Defense. This just makes me yell at everyone to get up. Still, there are plenty more sections with crazy, hardcore fans that love to make noise.
Is there any way to notify the Charger front office about this issue?

I could not find the email address of Scott and BR. I'm sure there will be another power rally, and the mention of this issue would be a perfect time to educate the charger fans. Although, the fans who actually do go to the rallies are pretty hardcore and already know the rules. therefore, it would be like preaching to the choir.
Making a banner would help and have people parade around the parking lot during a charger tailgate.

The reason you go to a NFL football game is to be loud and throw the other team off balance. Over the past years I have seen nothing of it from our fans. This year is a huge turn around but with the playoffs coming soon not only do the players need to step it up but the fans need to as well. Get loud and be proud. This is our year and the players need the support of our great fans.

Thanks for the suggestion. My wife and I were actually talking about this very thing the other day (she's learning the game slowly but surely), and she suggested a story on it. Maybe there's something to this! I'll see what we can do for the playoff run. If you have any other story ideas feel free to lob them our way!

I agree. Because it is much harder to hear plays being called when people are screaming so loud. Merriman said when the defense was on the sideline for last sundays game vs Seattle. That they couldnt hear each other talk when they where trying to correct there defense. And thats what us fans need to do when we go to the game. We need to be loud so they get more false start calls and the opposing offense cant hear when they call plays. So pretty much we need to get loud when the team is on Defense and then not say a word when our team is on offense.

SO LETS GET LOUD!!!!!!!!!!

Now that we are a super bowl contender fans don't quite know how to react to the situation. They don't know that fans are one of the biggest parts of winning games. With home field advantage in our grasp, fans must be educated on the importance of being loud during the game.

Unfortunately, the architecture of the stadium, especially the distance between the fans and the field on the sidelines, hampers the noise level on the field. If we had a stadium like the Seahags or Ratbirds, they'd be talking about us being one of the loudest out there!

Look at how the crowd changed the Giants/Eagles wildcard game.
I'm sick of always hearing about how Indy and Seattle are such hard places to play because of the crowd noise. Come sunday, lets show the NFL the San Diego is the hardest place for an opposing team to come to. Lets make Indy and Seattle look like a McDonald's playground!
I know that 60,000+ fans arent a part of this forum. But if YOU do your job, others will follow and the noise will be infectious throughout the Q. Get loud on EVERY DEFENSIVE SNAP, not just 3rd down. None of us should be able to talk for 2-3 days after sunday.
From an opposing team's view, it's awfully tough when the other crowd is very loud - and our fans are loud."

Peyton Manning says in tough road games, the opposing crowd usually gives his offense just enought quiet while in the huddle (giving him a chance to call a play without any problems), and won't start to get really loud until the offensive unit disperses into formation. He can still call an audible, but by that time it gets a little harder because the opposing crowd is already into it.

So it seems like the best time to get loud is right when the opposing offense starts to take the field (with the idea being to try and make it very hard just to hear what play the QB is trying to call from the get go.)

I just heard that about an hour ago driving home on 1090 a.m. A Charger fan called in and asked why so many fans yell while the Chargers are on offense. I think most of us are astute diehard fans on here but why so many fans that don't have a clue. Simply amazing.

Hmmm... I've been to several stadiums in the NFL and college for over 20 years. In every... EVERY... instance that the home QB raised his hands for quiet, it was as if you turned the stereo down from full to half in an instant. Even if you couldn't tell it with some individuals, the overall roar is what was affected.

Again...the OLINE would MUCH RATHER have exhuberant, loud cheering than silence. Keep in mind I didn't say that Rivers had to spend 5 precious seconds trying to quiet the crowd. I'm saying that the collective human nature is going to prevail and provide the maximum benefit to the home team at all times.

This argument is similar to that of foul balls. I have yet to see a home team person PURPOSELY stay out of a home fielder's way to allow him to make a play, ala Steve Bartman. Human nature is human nature, regardless of the sport.

You would THINK it's not rocket science but for some fans it is. Not all fans understand that when Rivers raises his arms to decrease the noise level that he's signaling to them. Couldn't agree more. This being a playoff game there are probably gonna be a lot of the bandwagoners there or people who don't usually go to regular season games, but want to go because its a playoff game. We need to educate these fans so they know whats up. We may think its common sense, but not all know.

Every week someone new has sat behind our seats all season. On two occassions we were asked to "quiet down" or "sit down." We don't swear or try to be obnoxious, we just yell on the top of our lungs every play our defense is on the field. Really? Most SD fans are hardcore? Are these the same hardcore fans that didn't go to games until the past couple seasons? Are these the same hardcore fans that didn't purchase a Chargers jersey until this year? I'll agree that there are a lot of hardcore Charger fans out there but they definitely don't make up the majority. The numbers are there, Smokey. Just look at how many times we sold out the Q prior to last season. I'm sure you remember the many bleak years this team had. How many times did you find yourself surrounded by "hardcore fans" then? If you can honestly say you were always surrounded by Charger faithful then ignore me. But many of the fans the Chargers have now are jumping on the bandwagon due to their recent success.
On TV yesterday there was a shot of the scoreboard in Foxboro and the Patriots had the same thing on their screen. Hmmm, maybe its just the fans ive been associated with. I see your point, i really do. The point i was trying to make is that there were thousands of real fans that had to endure the losing seasons. Faithful charger fans. I remember when basically the tailgate parties were the best part of the games. I dont like the genreal idea that the majority of SD fans are bandwagon. I just dont believe it.

BUT, I am very aware of all the new LT & charger gear everyone seems to be wearing nowadays. Its like "Where the F where all you guys all these years". I used to never mind being the underdog. New fans, believe it or not, there was a time not to long ago when unless you were from SD, wearing a bolt jersey was taboo.

With success comes the bandwagon. Theres nothing we can do except try to educate the new booties, so they dont start spewing nonsense and make the rest of us look stupid. The same ones talking loads of crap when we lose or something doesnt go the chargers way.

If your on, stay on! Its going to be a long ride.

Pass this along to everyone you know, who may not know what to do when our offense/defense is on the field.

This is going to be important come Sunday.

A few excerpts from the story:

As youre probably aware, up until THIS season, Qualcomm Stadium was often heavily populated with fans of the Chargers opponent. Season ticket holders often sold some of their ducats via auctions or brokers, and those seats ended up being occupied by fans of the Bolts RIVALS. Based on crowd noise alone, it was often difficult to tell that the Chargers were playing a HOME game.

But all that changed in 2006. Charger fans...Castillo makes it clear, though, that the offense feeds off the support and encouragement of the home crowd. "After a big catch or a first down, or even a five yard gain, MAKE NOISE, Luis implores. Let us hear and feel the energy. You can do that and still quiet down as the team returns to the huddle, but MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF ALL SMALL THINGS, not just the big 20 yard runs or 40 yard catches....

I do also agree that greedy people are selling their tickets to whomever will buy. It's something that will be around for ever, IMO. That means we got to yell and cheer that much louder. Do what we can as fans attending the game.

Hmmm.... If supposed "Pats fans" didn't bring radios to listen to a baseball game and instead pay attention the football game they were actually at, just maybe they would have made a little more noise to disrupt the Charger's offense to prevent the 41-17 shellacking they received last year. The 12th Man

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/cfx/12th_man2.gif
by Forrest Overin
This has been a miraculous season for the San Diego Chargers.
Finishing the regular season with a franchise best 14-2 record, despite being quarterbacked by a first year starter??? Astounding!
A division championship, a first round playoff bye, and the #1 seed in the AFC tournament? Remarkable!
And although you may not realize it, the fans have played an important role in the Bolts amazing run toward what could be the clubs first ever Super Bowl win.
Charger fans held on to their tickets, and if they parted with them, tried to ensure that those seats went to fellow Bolt diehards. Consequently, for the first time in recent memory the Chargers had a significant 12th Man presence, and it made a difference.

Football is a game of emotion and momentum, and the team that has a rabid crowd urging it on and providing encouragement has a distinct advantage. Yes, the 12th Man provides a tangible benefit that can make the difference between winning and losing.
Now I dont expect you to take CFXs word for it, but I assume you WILL accept Luis Castillos. Luis took the time to outline how Chargers fans can create a more powerful 12th Man presence, and provide the team with an important edge.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/cfx/charge_have_ball.jpg
When the Bolts are on offense, its important for the fans to keep the noise DOWN while Philip Rivers and Company are in the huddle, and at the line of scrimmage. The fans can play a key role in helping the offense to minimize errors. Yes, there are times at which SILENCE is golden.
One of the biggest things is allowing the offense to work, Luis affirms. Its important for (each player) to get the call, hear whats going on, and make adjustments at the line.
Keep in mind that as the offense lines up, Rivers FREQUENTLY calls for adjustments in the protection scheme, depending on what he sees in the alignment of the defense. If crowd noise interferes with teammates being able to hear Rivers, errors are FAR more likely to occur. This can easily result in a wasted down when the ball must be thrown away to avoid a sack. Worse, it can contribute to a sack, or even a turnover.
Castillo makes it clear, though, that the offense feeds off the support and encouragement of the home crowd.
"After a big catch or a first down, or even a five yard gain, MAKE NOISE, Luis implores. Let us hear and feel the energy. You can do that and still quiet down as the team returns to the huddle, but MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF ALL SMALL THINGS, not just the big 20 yard runs or 40 yard catches.
Why? Because that energy from the fans amps up the players. It inspires and encourages. We may not understand exactly HOW that transfer of energy takes place, but its nonetheless clear that it DOES, indeed, take place!
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/cfx/opponent_ball.jpg
Deafening noise distracts the opponents offense when theyre in the huddle, Castillo explains, and ESPECIALLY once theyre on the line of scrimmage, attempting to make audibles and hear the snap count.
If opponents cant hear the calls, theyre going to make errors. The fact of the matter is that fans can collectively make a difference in what takes place on the field.
Two or three false starts can completely change the course of a game, Luis explains, to say nothing of the havoc caused by missed blocking assignments that occur only because the opponents were unable to hear their quarterbacks signals.

There are other ways that fans can create a 12th Man impact, too.
As defensive players, says Castillo, one of our favorite chants is YOU CANT RUN!!! Believe us, when a team tries a run, gets stuffed, and all of a sudden the stadium explodes into a YOU CANT RUN!!! chant, it has a way of destroying (the opponents) confidence.
Leading into these playoff games, he continues, we would like to see the fans defend our house every series, from start to finish. Obviously, some plays are bigger than others, but hearing the roar of the crowd on a consistent basis mentally wears on opposing teams.
As the Chargers move into the postseason, the margin for error decreases. After all, one loss in the playoffs, and a teams season is OVER. Much has been made of the importance of the Chargers bringing their A Game, with maximum focus and intensity. Again, a rabid home crowd provides a big assist.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/cfx/special_teams_play.jpg
The rule of thumb is, if the Chargers are the team snapping the ball, QUIET can only help. If the opponent is snapping the ball, thats an opportunity for Charger fans to exert an influence by means of NOISE.
Regardless of how much kickers say they dont hear the crowd, theres no avoiding the added pressure when you cant hear yourself think, Luis contends.
Fans CAN make a difference, both in terms of disrupting the opponent, and encouraging the Chargers, although historically, San Diego fans have NOT been a strong 12th Man presence.
Lets change that. If youre going to the game this Sunday against the Patriots, were urging you to practice the guidelines discussed in this article. If you ARENT going to the game, but you know people who WILL be there, print this article out (or e-mail the url), and pass it along to others wholl have that opportunity to make a difference.
The 12th Man--- its up to us. Lets make it happen.
ROCK THE "Q" !!!

Let's bottom line why the fans were better this year....the team was better. Why were there so many fans of other teams throughout the years? Because going to a Charger game was masochistic with the bad teams we've been forced to watch.
I guess this sort of "How To Cheer" garbage is good for Chick Football 101 or foreigners, but this has been a football town since 1961. I look at it the other way, the Spanoses have learned "How To Run A Franchise". Took long enough.
Thank You.
No offense to LC, your still the man!

Be careful not to offend us "chicks" that know how and when to make noise at the opposing teams offense. There are a lot of men that don't. They start making noise when OUR offense is at work and get upset when those around try to settle it down.
Our crowd does tend to be quiet when the opposition in in the huddle and gets loud when they go to the line. We do need to get loud and stay loud to disrupt the huddle time as well.

For the Pats game, the crowd was louder as opposed to other games this season when we had the ball on offense. Luckily the noise subsided in my area after people literally had to tell others to shut up.
