By Pertinax

For Mrs. Emma Marchand of 167 East Merrimack street, the past week has been like a long-drawn-out Mothers day, full of pride, excitement and one surprise after another.

The charming mother of Joseph Marchand, chief photographer with the atomic sub Nautilus, which one recent midnight plowed under the icy mysteries of the North Pole, had few moments to herself since the news was broken to the world.

"My telephone, which seldom rings, han’t stopped, it seems, for a minute. I never tire of telling the story over and over—what know of it, that is. Joseph had told me he’d be assigned to the Nautilus, but didn’t know exactly what was going to happen. In his last letter—not the one I got FROM the Nautilus, but from Norfolk, Virginia, where he’s stationed—he wrote I wouldn't be hearing from him for a while, so I knew something big was up.

"Well! Reporters have called on me, both from The Sun and from Boston papers. Radio stations have contacted me. Western Union called to read me a telegram from the Nautilus’ Commander W. R. Anderson. I’ve been feeling like a celebrity myself. People tell me they wonder how I could have the secret, but I didn't know I WAS keeping a secret. Just about everyone I know spoken to me about Joseph and the Nautilus, and the other night, when I came back from the store and the telephone stopped ringing before I got to it, I wondered who ELSE was left that I hadn't already talked to."

THE MARCHAND family is Navy-all the way. That terrible Pearl Harbor Sunday happened a long time ago, but Mrs. Marchand still can’t talk of it without a catch in her throat. Her oldest boy, Raymond, was with a Navy bomber, and was killed that day. The four remaining sons, Arthur, Robert Joseph and Edward, marched straight to Navy headquarters and enlisted, the two youngest just squeezing past the age limit “It’s a good thing they were all of age," recalls Mrs. Marchand in soft tones. "There was just no holding them back."

Arthur lives in Lowell with his family his sailing days behind him. Robert lives ir Wichita, Kansas, where he is employed by Boeing Aircraft. During the war, he taught at a Navy "gunnery school, where he met ant married another gunnery instructor, a Wave Edward, still with the Navy, is just back from Germany, and was in town to share the excitement of knowing his brother was on th* historic mission. The only daughter, Sister Elizabeth of the Holy Ghost, stationed at Ogdensburg, N.Y., was also happily in town for an almost complete family reunion.

The boys have traveled all over the world so many times that Mrs. Marchand can’t remember when she last had them all at home together at one time. Their campaign ribbons embrace all the conceivable rainbow combinations, and the waT for her was pin pointed on many shifting, watery fronts. Joseph has covered greater distances than an; of the others, and the larger part of her souvenirs—treasured remembrances brought b; her sons from many parts of the globe—have come from him.

The days will just crawl till the 26th of this month, which is the date she thinks Joseph may be back home. That’s when she’ll see his presidential citation—presented to all the Nautilus crew by our Ambassador to England John Hay Whitney—and perhaps he'll bring some of his Nautilus pictures... there might even be a little souvenir of the Nautilus, itself. "Although I can't see,” she adds thoughtfully, "how can I feel any closer to that submarine than I do right now.”
