I like to cut a small block, proof it, then make Christmas cards from that proof at Kinkos. Then I run a small edition of the block and sell the "real" prints at a couple local galleries that do a Christmas season show. That way every one gets a card, I'm not offended when they don't notice or care, and I make a few bucks on the "real" prints. Win win win!
Well, now you've all got me rethinking making Christmas cards this year!
I rarely send them any more anyway but thought this year I'd do one for
a few friends and family. Not more than a dozen total. But...........now
I don't know if I will or not!
On the subject of giving prints to family - for his birthday I sent my
father one of the print El Cajon Bay (on my blog) since it's his backyard.
I waited to hear from him. Nothing. Finally I called to see if he got it.
"Oh, yes!" he said. "And do you know what your mother said about it?"
"No", I said, thinking I'd recieve high praise from her. "Your mother
said you sure packed it well!" (picture me hitting my head against the
wall repeatedly)
Speaking of 'cards', the New Year Rats are still coming in and it's
almost time to put up a signup page for next year. Next year is the
Chinese Year of the Ox.

We'll put up the signup page in early November and keep it open till mid
December. My Rat prints for this year are soooo late but finally ready
for mailing. If you are still working on yours there is still time to get
them done and mailed. Usually about 80% of the participants end up sending
cards which is a number we would REALLY like to improve on for next
year.....

Remember this is an informal exchange (NOT part of the quarterly Baren
Exchanges) and you are responsible for mailing a print to each of the
participants on the signup page.. It is open not just for woodblock but
for any hand-pulled process and the print size should be around 4X6". No
digital prints.

Carol Baker has done a great job of uploading New Year card images to the
Baren website but unfortunately I have not been able to keep up at
updating the website. We will try to get all of Rat images up for your
viewing asap. Look forward for updates.

Here is the link tot he current pages which are under construction:
Ok so we are talking about the role and personality for a designer, carver
and printer ? But what about the fourth person....I mean in old Japan the
publisher took care of ordering the work, lining up the work force and
advertising and selling the prints. In today's world unless you have 'made
it' and can afford to hire a manager or a big gallery artists themselves
must also take on this added task. I suspect it is rare the person that
can wear all four hats and do a good job at all of them. Regardless of
style full-time printmakers/bareners like Maria, April, Mike, David and
others have to spend a great deal of time and energy promoting their work.

We live in a great era and the advances in technology allows us the
ability to advertise and sell our work to the entire world. Take for
example Barenforum....it has members all over the world and thanks to the
Internet allows us to communicate and share our work with a simple click
of the mouse.
The prices keep coming down on image storage so it has become way cheaper
for artists to store and share their images online.

For an artist like Dave Bull (we can't call you just a craftsman anymore
!) who is very skilled at the use of the computer this is a tremendous
advantage. Not only has Dave been able to share and advertise his work
online but he has also given back to the printmaking process by creating
and sharing with us all the insider's information about the techniques
involved.
My apologies to all for the multiple posts yesterday. The one about
the Xmas card was meant for Graham. I must have mis-clicked. I mis-a-
lot of things, it seems. And, lately I seem to be missing the right
key and hitting the wrong key and suddenly all of these empty windows/
pages pop up in my face. I don't know if its me, or the computer
that is going nutz.

Gotta get back to my woodblock now. (I hadn't said anything
woodblocky, yet--)

Happy printing,
Hi Dave,

Just a little feedback if you don't mind. I miss the long list of members'
blogs down the page at the bottom. If I felt on checking on someone in
particular I could just click on their blog, even if they don't have
anything current.

Any change of getting that back?

Thanx for all the work you put in!
