The priests and priestesses appear to be shedding their vestments. And Foo Fighters 23 times?<br /> <strong>ITZKOFF:</strong> It&#8217;s all about Making Grammy Moments<sup>TM</sup><br /> <strong>CARAMANICA:</strong> In fairness, while both &#8220;Soul Train&#8221; and this mash-up involve dancing, I&#8217;m not sure they have much else in common. Even Dave Grohl isn&#8217;t sure why he&#8217;s performing during this segment. Deadmau5 is the Foo Fighters of dance music.<br /> <strong>ITZKOFF:</strong> This is going to be the night when the Walt Disney Company learns that he exists, and it won&#8217;t be pleased. Jennifer Hudson performs a song Houston didn&#8217;t write or originally record but<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14ivtcelIo0"> owned in every other way: &#8220;I Will Always Love You.&#8221;</a><br /> <strong>JON CARAMANICA:</strong> I think at this point, Jennifer Hudson exists largely for ceremonial duties such as this. The fact is, J-Hud will probably never record a song of her own that&#8217;s as indelible as this, but she can slip on someone else&#8217;s skin like nobody&#8217;s business.<br /> <strong>ITZKOFF:</strong> If, theoretically, they could have chosen any artist to field these difficult duties, I can&#8217;t think of any other who could have handled it.<br /> <strong>CARAMANICA:</strong> I would have preferred Beyonc&#233;, of course, who I think would have captured the ambition and brightness of the song in a way that J-Hud couldn&#8217;t quite. But as a technical exercise, which that largely was, it was very good, and smartly done too.</p><div id="bon-ivers-grammy-quandary" class="updated-entry"><h5 class="updated-marker highlight"><span class="time"><a href="#bon-ivers-grammy-quandary">10:42 P.M.</a></span> <em>|</em><strong>Bon Iver&#8217;s Grammy Quandary</strong></h5></div><p>Last year, I interviewed Justin Vernon <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/05/magazine/who-what-and-where-is-bon-iver.html?pagewanted=all">for the New York Times Magazine</a>, and he expressed a terrific amount of ambivalence about the Grammy Awards process. I think he was speaking as someone who didn&#8217;t ever think he&#8217;d be nominated for a Grammy, though it was obvious even then that he was on a similar path as Arcade Fire, the band who&#8217;d been the surprise <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/14/arts/music/14grammy.html">winner of several awards</a> in 2011.</p><p>So he was aggressive talking about how he felt that making music was not about awards, how it was about music, and so on. Clearly Grammy voters didn&#8217;t hold it against him. Gwyneth Paltrow introduces Adele.<br /> <strong>JON CARAMANICA:</strong> O.K., a note about the disingenuousness of the Grammys: every time they want to code that a &#8220;real&#8221; musician is performing, they have them sing a capella, or with minimal accompaniment. It&#8217;s a way of signaling to the older, more conservative audience that, &#8220;hey, we know all these kids are doing their wacky computer-assisted rapping and whatnot, but we know what real music is.&#8221; But that strategy is cheap, because it sets up Adele to &#8220;win&#8221; as compared to, say, David Guetta.
