Describing it as 'the perfect place,' Grammy Award Winner Gloria Estefan took The Bahamas by storm this past weekend with a concert to launch her new album Alma Caribena.

The album title, which when translated means 'Caribbean Soul,' is on the Epic Records label and sends an electrifying message to the world from the passionate soul of the Caribbean. It also features Latin superstars like Marc Anthony, Jose Feliciano and Celia Cruz.

The concert, which was held on Saturday at Atlantis, Sun International on the Mayan Temple Lawn, was taped for Estefan's first network television special, which will be aired on CBS on May 12th at 8:00pm.

It is anticipated that the TV special will reach an audience of over 200 million viewers as it will be aired in North America and 66 other countries.

The live performance attracted a swarm of fans, both local and international.

The recorded show will not only feature The Bahamas but also Atlantis Sun International.

Since the hotel's grand opening in 1998, it continues to grow as an international mecca for the stars.

Last year renowned journalist Oprah Winfrey taped an entire week of her show at Sun Atlantis, which also featured the Caribbean's Sexiest Man contest.

Regis & Kathie Lee also came to the Bahamas to tape several of their daily shows.

Estafan's grand appearance to our tropical isle just adds more luster to our growing popularity.

At a press conference yesterday, which was attended by nearly 100 members of the international media, she and husband Emilio Estefan Jr. were formally welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister Frank Watson who presented her with an insignia set of Bahamian Harl Taylor's Spring/Summer handbags which he said "reflects the talent and natural treasures of The Bahamas."

In his welcome remarks, Watson expressed his delight at the presence of the Estefan production in The Bahamas.

"It gives us the opportunity to be seen by millions of people around the world, to showcase the beauty, charm and hospitality of our people," he said.

Having attended the Saturday night concert, Watson said, "it had all the ingredients of being a very spectacular and very successful concert."

Sun's Chief Operating Officer Alan Leibman also presented the lovely Latin diva with a gargantuan painting by local artist Antonius Roberts titled, Shadows of the Caribbean - a gift said to represent the "spirit of the Bahamian people."

Estefan was dressed in a turquoise form fitting pants suit as she entertained the press.

Displaying her multilingual ability, Estefan never fell short when asked questions and responded with great intellectual prowess.

She said that after having such an exhilarating time in The Bahamas when on vacation last year, she thought it most ideal for the launching of her new album.

"First of all it's a neutral ground," said Estefan, noting that although The Bahamas is in the territories of the Caribbean, its culture breathes not of Latin music like countries such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Panama.

"This wonderful, wonderful place was such a beautiful place in the Caribbean ...and we just knew everyone would want to come here," she said.

"It was an easy choice. I am an island girl. This is what I love. This is the climate I love. The beaches are spectacular and the people are so nice and so laid back. So this was the perfect place for this album and I hope we come back many, many times," she said.
