Granted, there are plenty of strange politicians. Vermont, I’m looking at you. South Carolina, you’ve been weird for a long time. And who can forget New York, home of the tickle?

But really, nobody can compete with the fact that California’s governor is the same man who made Kindergarten Cop, a movie whose tagline is “An undercover cop in a class by himself.” For those who thought that California’s politicians had no place to go but up, I apologize–it just wasn’t meant to be.

First, there’s Carly Fiorina, the controversial former head of Hewlett Packard (and Stanford alum). She’s running to unseat incumbent Senator Barbara Boxer (D), who is up for election. Fiorina tried to make some remarks about the Jewish holiday of Passover, in which you can’t eat bread, and wrote, “As we break bread…” Fiorina’s campaing spokesowman quickly backpedaled on this hilarious faux pas, which is being deemed Matzah-gate, saying, “We meant all bread, leavened and unleavened, and matzo is just unleavened bread so that’s what we meant by that.”

Then there’s Meg Whitman, the billionaire former CEO of eBay who is trying to get the Republican nomination for Governer of California to replace Schwarzenegger. Today, she sent out her “policy book“–better described as a 48-page shiny advertisement–to 1600 libraries across the state, asking them to “display my magazine in their periodicals section so voters can gain a clear understanding of how I will govern, if elected in November.” A magazine bearing your name right in the middle of the periodicals section? Who does she think she is, Oprah?

If magazines and religious faux-pas don’t interest you, there’s something for everyone on November’s ballot: there will be a proposition seeking to legalize marijuana in the state.

California–we’ve got it all, except for money.

The decision to purchase these volumes and feature them so conspicuously seems bizarre, given that Stanford possesses some of the nation’s brightest minds and has (supposedly) tried to cut wasteful spending. Particularly ludicrous is the inclusion of Twitter for Dummies…isn’t that the point of Twitter?

The odd assortment leads one to question how much faith the Bookstore managers have in students’ intellects. Perhaps this assumption of ignorance also explains the exorbitant prices they charge for textbooks. Alas, students are not as dumb as they think; many opt to buy their books on Amazon in lieu of getting ripped off.

On the basketball quart on Flomo field someone wrote several cantos of Dante’s Inferno in an impressively minute hand. It may have been OK’d for a SLE final project or possibly it came from a more renegade source but it has survived rain and this Universities usual aversion to public art for over a year. It’s one of my favorite little pieces of campus, more student presence of this kind on campus would make it a more interesting place to live.

It is fairly clear that it is in the University’s best interest to maintain control of student rights. For the most part, there are no issues, since the University and the students do not clash often enough to make headlines–and when they do, very few people will say anything. But in response to the Westboro Baptist Church protests and various other free speech violations, various members of the ASSU tried to codify campus free speech laws to ensure their protection at the end of Winter quarter…and were forcefully shut down, replete with a letter from President Hennessy’s office essentially telling students that they have no authority and should not even try to pass any meaningful legislation.

From the letter:

The ASSU has no authority to legislate on behalf of the University and this amendment will not be accepted by the University if passed [...] In the very rare instances in which the University permits a limitation of its authority through the ASSU, it is only after significant consultation with VPSA.

After going to the drawing board, having Kevin code some stuff, returning to the drawing board, having Kevin code more stuff, etc. for a long period of time, we present TUSB 3.0: the newest version of The Unofficial Stanford Blog. We think it’s easier to use, more functional, and just overall a whole lot better.

You can do captions, too!

Over the next few days, we will work to finalize the new site for the time being and try to make sure it has limited bugs. Let us know if you see something that looks awry by emailing us at blogforstanford@gmail.com and we will send our crack team of investigators to take a look.

Here’s some of the new features of the site:

New toolbar across the top: Your one-stop shop for easy navigation between the blog, the events calendar, features, about us, sign up, and our newest addition, the free stuff tab (coming soon).

New header: People hated the old header. People hated the header before that. There’s really nowhere to go but up. For those who are curious, the little upside-down man is our unofficial new mascot–it is a reference to the statue of Louis Agassiz that fell headless into the cement after the 1906 earthquake. We think it’s pretty nifty, funny, unofficial, etc.

As the New York Times points out, this is the first time an Ivy League team has won an NCAA tournament in 12 years–or, in other words, when Celine Dion, Aerosmith, Shania Twain, Cher, and Run DMC occupied the top 5 chart positions of the year.
And, of course, it’s even nicer when the nerdy kids from Stanford show up the jocks: Heisman runner-up Toby Gerhart posted the highest score for running backs on the Wonderlic exam, the NFL’s equivalent of an applied intelligence test.
What is the Wonderlic? The Wonderlic test is a 12-minute, 50 question exam aimed at evaluating a prospect’s problem-solving abilities.
Gerhart scored a 30. For comparison’s sake, Cal’s Jahvid Best scored a 24, and almostfellow Heisman finalist C.J. Spiller of Clemson scored a pitiful 10. As one commenter noted, “Spiller is a great back but he’s the intellectual equivalent of my George Foreman Grill.”
Though it was not entirely a good day for basketball-playing Harvard Law-graduating President Obama: his bracket struggled to a 75% finish. That’s a C…but if he were at Stanford, it would likely be curved to an A-.

I’ve gotta admit though, I never thought this day would come. It’s pretty much common knowledge that the selection committee will never match a one with a 16 that can run with them. There’s just too much money on the line for that. Now I’m not gonna say that the Stanford women have anything to worry about, because lets face it, there are four teams that have a shot at that tourney. The rest are simply <strike>playing for the right to get rolled by a one seed.</strike> errrr, tough competitors that will face matchup problems in the later rounds. And make no mistake, I’m 100% confident that John Wall will John Wall Dance right into the final four. Ok Ladies and Gents, here we go, my upset special 2010 is Lane Kiffin!!!!!
Yup. USC’s head football coach is on the verge of making history. He is currently beating #1 seed Natalie Gulbis (pictured) in Esquire.com’s Sexiest Woman Alive contest. No doubt this has something to do with all those bent fans at Tennessee that still have an axe to grind after he left them, but there’s also no doubt this is awesome. No wonder lil wayne raps about this guy’s trash talking abilities. Imagine the kind of smack he’ll talk if he does the unthinkable and wins Sexiest Woman Alive! (“Do You Believe in Miracles?” ) I can think of some very sexy women…that are also alive…and he’s not in my top 9,462. *Note: He is however crushing Rosie (10,465,297) pretty much because the Donald made her untouchable with this classic blast.
I kinda hope he pulls it off though. Probably because I selfishly want to see the taunts/posters/band performances in his honor when USC comes into our crib next season. Unfortunately, I don’t see this one ending well for our Cinderella. He’s got a tall mountain to climb in an unenviable 8/9 Matchup of Danica Patrick or Erin Andrews so there’s that. Plus there’s got to be an emotional letdown after such a big victory. I mean, NOBODY gave him a chance at sexiest woman alive, and to embarrass the top seed, that’s legendary. He’d be walking right into a classic trap game. I can’t get caught up in the future though. I’m just gonna enjoy the moment and be glad I’ll finally be able to say that I lived to see a 16 beat a 1.
In case you’re wondering, my last Upset Special was R. Kelly over the Department of Justice. Nailed it!

One of the exciting elements of studying at Stanford is the access–for better or for worse–to Silicon Valley which lies just beyond the borders of the Stanford moat (bubble). Whereas at other schools, there is a sort of tension between entrepreneurship and academics, Stanford students and faculty (at least beyond the few that hail from UC-Berkeley) seem to embrace both whole-heartedly.
And just as the convolution of academics and athletics results in some impressive accomplishments, the combination of academics and entrepreneurship has lead to many a well-known company, from Yahoo.com to Google, from HP to newer startups such as Meebo.com.

I’m blogging this live, as it were, from the CS294h “Social Software” class taught by prof. Jeff Heer (MIT TR35 winner) and Sep Kamvar of wefeelfine.org.
The project list, which can be found here on GitHub, ranged from the hyperlinked storytelling of LineHive.com to the Quora-like Unmelt.com, to Marcia Lee et al.’s GitDocs project, to name just a few.
The gist of the class? Students, in the span of a ten-week quarter, start from iteration and paper prototyping to iteration and engineering, deployment on the real, live Web, and A-B user testing, which is quite an impressive feat for such a short time span.
Social software is huge these days, whether at Stanford or beyond, from Facebook.com or Flickr to newer attempts such Quora, Hunch, and Unmelt.com.
From an academic perspective, the questions come back to psychology and sociology, engineering and design. How are users incentivized to use these student projects deployed live on the Web? How do developers ask scientific-like questions about how their software should be designed? Are there principles behind helping to manage how communities ebb and flow online?
More after the jump.

Stanford will first take on the barely-over-.500 UC-Riverside, which started the season with a record of 3-12, on Saturday. Assuming Stanford advances past their early-round foes at Maples Pavilion, the competition should heat up quickly: the number 2 seed in Stanford’s bracket, Texas A&M (#9 overall), or third-seeded Xavier (#5 overall) have both posted impressive records and could be formidable challenges.
The meaningless pre-tournament analysis is reassuring, though: all of the “experts” and 5 of the 6 “analysts” project Stanford to make it to the final four.
And while the men’s team did not make it to the tournament, studies have proven that college women’s basketball is better than men’s–or at least that they are better at graduating.

I pulled on my sweatpants, pulled my hair up, and my roommate looked up with a knowing smile. “Getting ready to study?” She says, and I nod: “I’m done with procrastinating.” Although I have very little experience with video games – a few episodes of obsession with gameboy in elementary school – she and I came up with a metaphor. Procrastination is like losing lives. The ultimate goal is to complete your projects (paper, presentation, studying for that looming midterm on Monday). Sweatpants, a hairtie, and books are only accessories, while the backpack (and inside, the laptop), is the heart. Unfortunately, the heart can also be misleading, and cause you to lose lives (c’mon guys, get off facebook…). But if you lose the heart, GAME OVER.

I headed over to Green for a late night of studying, hopefully minus the procrastination aspect. I can’t afford to lose any more lives, as it already is Dead Week. Good luck with your finals, everyone.

You could spend your time effectively studying for finals, or you could spend your time effectively procrastinating for finals. We at TUSB have selected some of our favorite time-using (wasting carries such a negative connotation, you know?) sites that will, at the very least, brighten your outlook on some of the subjects you’re studying.
HISTORY: Sometimes, historical figures are inspiring; other times, they are destructive; sometimes they’re crazy; and sometimes they’re badass.
ENGLISH: A topic sentence might get the reader’s attention, but so will a big-ass message. See picture for example.
POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY: As long as the value of humor is based on the labor expended to make the joke funny, Marx is ok with it.
PHYSICS: Mechanics is a beautiful thing. E and M–well, ok, that’s good too.
MUSIC: Think of this as sort of a practice exam.
Good luck on finals, and try not to blame us if you procrastinate a little too well…
