one page, 7.5 in x 10 in, personal letterhead, November 18, 1924. Letter
to Captain William Brass about a possible upcoming appointment. In part:
“I am really writing to ask you about my P.P.S. I shall have to
appoint somebody very soon, and I need hardly say that I would rather
have you than anyone. At the same time I can quite understand that you
may wish not to take up a rather more independent position; and, if
so, please don’t hesitate to tell me. I want you to consider your
own career first in this matter.” Chamberlain also writes a brief
postscript: “Please be quite candid in lettering me your inclination.”
Bisecting mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature, pencil
notations to top, rough and lightly trimmed left edge, and a light overall
shade of toning, otherwise fine condition. Chamberlain is scarce in
any form and he should be represented in any WW II collection.

two 3 in x 5 in note cards on which President Reagan outlined A CAMPAIGN
speech he gave on a 1979 swing through Montana and North Dakota . The
cards are in excellent condition and they appear to have been printed
using a standard ball point pen. They are unsigned. President Reagan
often used similar file cards to outline his speeches and he even mentions
this point in his book Speaking My Mind. These cards therefore
represent an outstanding and important historical artifact. In terms
of their provenance , these cards were left in Reagan's Hotel room in
Cut Bank Montana and were rescued by the person with great foresight
and a sense of history who cleaned the room after he departed. The world
has turned over many times since that giant Ronald Reagan thundered
across the world's stage. These cards represent quintessential Reagan----thoughtful,
informed, insightful and well aware that the Soviet Empire was exactly
what he called it somewhat later--AN 'EVIL EMPIRE' THAT COULD NOT BE
TRUSTED. REAGAN HAD A COMMITMENT TO PRESERVING THE SECURITY AND FREEDOM
OF THE LAND HE LOVED-THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AS WELL AS FREEDOM
FOR THE WESTERN WORLD AND TAIWAN. President Reagan had a keen sense
of obligation to our friends and allies and thus turned around the thought
that it was more dangerous to be a friend than to be an enemy of the
United States which flourished while Carter was president.

was a seminal event which made him the most important literary

evil of Stalin and communism to the attention of the entire world. Here

Each of us is a center of the Universe, and that Universe is shattered
when they hiss at you: You are under arrest."After

in the United Sttes to find any redeeming qualities in the Soviet system--although
they tried hard enough. Some argue that the publication of this book
had a profound effect on many Americans including Ronald Reagan and
that it was therefore the pebble that started an avalanche of revulsion
which eventually led to the downfall of the Soviet Union.

Vice-president and 34th President of the United States. This is a TLS
on US Senate stationery in which Truman responds to a letter asking
him if he had changed his mind on the Supreme Court 'Question.' This
letter was written just 10 days after ---"FDR sent his court-reform
bill to Congress on February 5, 1937. In his accompanying message, Roosevelt
stated that the judiciary should be reorganized "in order that
it also may function in accord with modern necessities." FDR pointed
out that the number of justices on the Supreme Court had been changed
by Congress six previous times. The president argued that the federal
courts were crowded with pending cases causing costly delays. He also
addressed the issue of "aged or infirm judges" and the need
for "younger blood."" As everyone knew then and knows
now, FDR was having all of his New Deal schemes declared unconstitutional
by the Supreme court and he wanted to pack the court with judges who
would pass the New Deal programs. In Truman's letter he states that he
has no opinion (sic) regarding FDR's proposal and that he wants more
facts before deciding a matter, as HST put it, "That goes to the
root of our government." A wonderful letter on a historic conflict
between the Executive and Judicial branches and a letter that reflects
Truman's character.

story was first published in Yiddish in 1969, and was translated into
English by the author in 1982 under the title The Golem. A golem is
a magical creature out of Jewish mythology. He's made of clay, and imbued
with life through Cabbalistic magic and/or divine intervention to assist
the Jewish people in a time of need. This version of the golem myth
is presented as a children's story, although it is a blood-and-guts
versions of the popular fairy tales. The persecution of the Jews is
told bluntly, and the absurdity of the false accusations and sham trials
is made obvious to all. But persecution is only one of the many themes
here. All the best children's literature is the stuff that adults won't
tire of easily. The Golem is no exception. Read it for
yourself first and decide if it's suitable bed-time reading for the
little ones, or if it would just involve too many parenthetical explanations
on your part. In any case, you won't be sorry you read it.
