We’ve all been there: snapped at by a lab partner for losing focus in class and almost lighting her hair on fire. Just last week, your boss ostracized you for being inattentive in your morning meeting. We all lose concentration sometimes, and it can easily affect how quickly and efficiently we get work done. But what if you suffered from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and struggled daily with laxity and impulsivity? Is drug therapy your only solution to calmer nerves? Recent studies suggest diet and exercise may be worth trying.

According to a recent study in Pediatrics, maintaining a healthy diet, minimizing items known to predispose to ADHD (sugary, fatty foods), and adding omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, may help combat ADHD symptoms and offer less reliance on medications.

Adopt and maintain a healthy diet and exercise plan.

“No matter what, good nutrition and an exercise prescription are an important adjunct to any kind of illness,” says Dr. Daisy Merey, family physician, certified nutritional consultant, and a diplomat of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians.

In a recent issue of the Journal of Attention Disorders, a study found that a structured physical activity program may help to improve the muscular capacities, motor skills, and behavioral patterns of children who suffer from ADHD.

“There are two general areas where healthier choices seem most effective in dealing with ADHD,” says Dr. Wayne Anderson, medical director for Take Shape for Life Wellness Program. “The first is adding components to your diet that enhance healthy brain activity and body function or removing certain items that may potentially create dysfunction. The second area linked to improving ADHD is adding activity.”

Minimize fatty food intake

In the article, the authors – J. Gordon Millichap, MD, and Michelle M. Yee, CPNP, from Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago – point to another study published last year that links ADHD in adolescents to a “Western-style” dietary pattern, including fast food, red meat, potato chips, and soft drinks.

“Simply adding more greens and minimizing unhealthy fats, processed foods and sugars can only help the overall health status of everyone,” says Jakie Keller, board certified health and wellness coach and founder of NutriFit.

“We always recommend lean protein, lots of vegetables, salad, fruit and a restriction of carbohydrates especially sugar and starches which are inflammatory,” says Dr. Merey.

Add omega-3s to your diet

Bring on the salmon and walnuts! Also found in flaxseed oil and sardines, Keller says omega-3s are favorable fatty acid chains that help reduce the inflammatory response and get blood flowing through the body and brain, increasing clarity of thought and focus.

“The more research is done, the more useful we find omega-3 fatty acids are in helping many health conditions – brain health, heart health, and anti-inflammatory health,” says Dr. Kathi Kemper, pediatrician and professor of public health sciences and pediatrics at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Talk to your doctor

The study references a healthy diet and exercise plan as something that should be used when pharmacotherapy has proven unsatisfactory or unacceptable. Talk to your doctor or therapist first and see what she suggests.

“In treating AHDD, I would start with nutritional intervention and exercise and then add medications if necessary,” says Anderson. “Even if a medication is needed, it can probably be used at a lower dose, which will improve its long term safety in both children and adults.”

Dr. Kemper agrees: “For some, simply adopting a healthy diet, avoiding artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners and preservatives, is enough. For others, there is a need for more exercise, more sleep, and better stress management.”

February 12, 2012

By: KELSEY CRUZ, getfitgetlife editor

We’ve all been there: snapped at by a lab partner for losing focus in class and almost lighting her hair on fire. Just last week, your boss ostracized you for being inattentive in your morning meeting. We all lose concentration sometimes, and it can easily affect how quickly and efficiently we get work done. But what if you suffered from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and struggled daily with laxity and impulsivity? Is drug therapy your only solution to calmer nerves? Recent studies suggest diet and exercise may be worth trying

“Simply adding more greens and minimizing unhealthy fats, processed foods and sugars can only help the overall health status of everyone,” says Jakie Keller, board certified health and wellness coach and founder of NutriFit.“We always recommend lean protein, lots of vegetables, salad, fruit and a restriction of carbohydrates especially sugar and starches which are inflammatory,” says Dr.

For others, there is a need for more exercise, more sleep, and better stress management.

The following article is from the Huffington Post and was written by the Ellen Shane. The Emily Shane Foundation Ellen Shane’s 13-year-old daughter, Emily, was struck by a car and killed as she walked along the shoulder of the Pacific Coast Highway two years ago. Ellen Shane has formed the Emily Shane Foundation in her daughter’s memory, a group that encourages good deeds and acts of kindness.

I was stunned when they declared a mistrial. I sat in the courtroom completely unable to fathom how five jurors could not find this man guilty of murdering my daughter. He drove on a suicide rampage for 17 miles. More than six people observed his reckless driving at different points along his route and called 911. Eyewitnesses saw him turn to hit my daughter, who was walking along the shoulder of the road (there are no sidewalks along PCH in Malibu).

Emily had left a friend’s house and was on her way to meet her dad. After throwing my daughter 30 feet in the air, the driver went up a small embankment, hit a pole and his car flipped over. He came out unscathed; my daughter died shortly after being thrown. She never spoke or regained consciousness after being hit. We had no chance to even say ‘goodbye’ to her. Sina Khankhanian’s response to her death to the first responders on the scene was, ‘I don’t give a f-ck. The bitch deserved to die.’

I came to the trial hoping — praying — for justice.

I have learned quite a bit about our legal system and unfortunately have seen its failings firsthand. I was naive to expect that the trial would bring swift and fair justice. The charge against the driver was second-degree murder, which requires two things: “conscious disregard” and a victim. It seemed crystal clear to me that someone who drove for 17 miles at speeds of 60 and 70 miles per hour, crossing into oncoming traffic, splitting lanes, swerving into the shoulder (where pedestrians and cyclists use the road), and coming up so quickly on other motorists that they were forced to move out of the way shows conscious disregard. And my daughter was the victim. The verdict should have been a slam dunk.

But the man who killed my daughter was diagnosed in his early 20s with a mild form of autism. The defense attorney used this to create “reasonable doubt.” How mild was his autism? He was mainstreamed in high school, had a 3.0 GPA, and had taken some college-level classes. He had a driver’s license for 11 years, held a job for five years, and was in a relationship with a woman he wanted to marry. He led a very normal life. His former fiancee testified that she hadn’t even known about his autism until he told her, even though the two had worked together for years; she had no idea.

The defense attorney portrayed his client as a mental incompetent who was unaware that his driving that day could harm to someone. He presented a medical expert who backed this up. Common sense got lost in the courtroom.

On the day he killed my daughter, he was upset. He had lost his job, his fiancee wanted to call it quits. The morning of the murder, he had transferred funds out of his bank account, left a check for his fiancee and a suicide note. He put his cell phone and wallet by her bed stand. He wanted to talk to her, but she was unresponsive, which made him upset and angry. He took his car key and left.

Can you imagine how it felt for me to see him in court? He, who wanted to kill himself, is well-groomed, healthy and very much alive. He sat there beside his attorney, all dressed up in a suit, and smiled at his family. My daughter, who was just blossoming into a beautiful young woman and had everything to live for, is dead.

How could a jury deadlock and not see through the defense tactics? How is justice served here? So-called experts who are paid for their testimony looking for an excuse to let a murderer of a child go free… it makes me ill. The nightmare for us continues. After reliving our daughter’s death over and over again with each witness… hearing details from the emergency responders that no parent should know and that are now embedded in our psyches, we will have to relive the entire process.

It will be worth it though, if justice is served the next time around.

Choose a better meal replacement in 2012: Orgain organic meal replacement drink

Michele McIntyre

Dr. Andrew Abraham, founder of Orgain organic meal replacement, is a cancer survivor who wanted to develop a healthy substitute for patients struggling to eat during treatment. The solution was Orgain,an organic, healthy, nutritional drink that has all the proteins and vitamins of a healthy meal.

Orgain is a healthy, all organic drink with 24 vitamins and minerals, and 16 grams of protein. There are absolutely no preservatives, colorings, artificial flavors, artificial sugars, and is completely gluten free. It is perfect for a meal replacement, after-workout recovery, and for an extra energy boost without the caffeine and sugar crashes.

Orgain contains 50 mg of organic vegetables (kale, beet, spinach, carrot, and tomato), and another 50 mg of organic fruits (blueberry, banana, acai, apple, and raspberry) in every serving. That equals to ten servings of your daily fruits and vegetables! It also contains dietary fiber derived from chicory, whey protein from brown rice, and antioxidant immune support from decaffeinated green tea and pomegranate.

Orgain comes in three delicious flavors: creamy chocolate fudge, sweet vanilla bean, and iced cafe mocha made with the highest quality organic cocoa and organic vanilla. It is encased in a recyclable tetra pak that has a shelf life of over a year, without the use of added preservatives.

Myself, along with a small group of health-conscious tester friends, tried the chocolate and vanilla flavors and found them to not taste chalky, like we’ve experienced with other meal replacement drinks. The chocolate was creamy and the “vanilla tasted like a vanilla milk shake from McDonald’s”, said one tester.

“We all want to eat healthy, organic meals, but our hectic lifestyles don’t always make that practical,” said Abraham, Orgain’s founder and CEO, who specializes in family medicine at Kaiser Permanente, Calif. “I designed Orgain with optimum nutrition in mind, making it suitable for use as a meal replacement, a post-workout shake and as a nutritious choice for strengthening the immune system, particularly during times of illness,” he has noted.

Packaged in an eco-friendly, recyclable tetra pak, each 11-ounce serving of Orgain contains 255 nutrient-dense calories in a 2:1 complex carbohydrate to protein ratio, which explains why they kept us surprisingly full for a long time:

16 grams organic protein to help build lean muscle.

Antioxidants equivalent to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables.

24 vitamins and minerals.

Lightly sweetened with organic brown rice syrup.

Heart-healthy fiber.

Organic pomegranate and green tea extract with 90 percent polyphenols.

Organic kale, beets, spinach, tomatoes and carrots.

Organic blueberries, bananas, acai berry, apple and raspberries.

Orgain is aseptically packaged and shelf stable without refrigeration for 12 months. Best served chilled, Orgain is designed to deliver an organic meal, anytime, anywhere. In addition to supporting good health, energy, and immunity, it can also be enjoyed for weight management.

Orgain is available at Whole Foods Market, Wegmans, Mother’s Market, Fairway and over 2,000 natural food retailers across the country. It can also be purchased online at www.drinkorgain.com.

The chocolate was creamy and the “vanilla tasted like a vanilla milk shake from McDonald’s“, said one tester.

Let’s not forget the 72-day farce of a marriage that was Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries.

Celebrity marriages keep falling apart… they just don’t work! Why don’t Hollywood marriages last?

“Unfortunately in this town (Hollywood) divorces are a dime a dozen and there are several reasons why,” says Michael Kelly, a divorce attorney in Beverly Hills, California.

“In my experience, having represented many high-stakes celebrity divorces frequent failure to agree on who takes care of the children instead of their career, infidelity and insecurities, divergent career paths, PR-scandals, and unequal income and unequal projects are some of the most common factors of why many celebrity marriages don’t last.”
You’d think that celebrities would be smart enough to be prepared when entering such a commitment. If you ever wonder why these celebrity divorces get so complicated, surprisingly many celebrities don’t sign prenuptial agreements.

“Many make large amounts of money in a short amount of time without an adequate financial plan. Taxes, distribution or sharing of assets, and failure to plan drastically complicate a divorce,” says Kelly.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore

“All of these things combined make celebrity divorces much more complicated than the average.”

All the fame, fortune and success don’t seem to enough to hold some of these couples together. I often wonder if it’s due to boredom; sad to say but when you have it all and can buy anything, how spoiled have you become that you are bored with one relationship and wish to find something new?

On the other hand, with Ashton and Demi, Ashton’s infidelity was reason for Demi to divorce. But in Heidi Klum and Seal’s case, the couple reportedly split amicably – why not work harder to keep their marriage together then?

Then you look at those Hollywood marriages that have lasted. There are few that’s for sure but let’s take Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie – are they solid?

“The Pitt-Jolie marriage has actors with equal careers, equal assets, shared child rearing tasks, and good planning. These are some of the reasons that their marriage has lasted.”

So perhaps A-listers should date A-listers? If an A-list actor marries a D-list actor, there may be some animosity and jealousy perhaps with respect to career and finances… interesting thought.

“It takes special love, open communication and planning to make a normal marriage work. In celebrity divorces the extreme pressures of career add a very difficult element.”
