The longest a coalition has lasted previously in Britain is two years. I think they have done well so far but not many of the UK citizens seem to agree with me!

Today Wednesday 11th May is another sunny day following an April when the “droght of March has not been perced to the rote” to adapt Chaucer’s famous lines.

My web designer has just set up this blog to restart after a year or so of silence since my dramatic fall down the steps at Charing Cross.

Can it have taken this long for me to recover?

Anyway; welcome back and hopefully the blogs will be more frequent in future.

Today, Sunday 26th July, I took the train to Charing Cross and walked down to the Horseguards Hotel.

Kevin Brown, an expert at creating WordPress blogs had organised a seminar featuring two of my favourite internet gurus – Kevin Riley and Lee McIntyre.

I learned a fair amount from both of them and from Kevin Brown himself. I was especially impressed by the way Kevin Riley encouraged the use of more images in ebooks etc. He can create his own outstanding ebook covers which make you want to buy the ebook just for the cover.

Lee told us to keep working at improving the conversion rate of our websites. Too often people give up on a website which does not sell well. Greater patience could lead to big improvements and great success.

I left the seminar cockahoop thinking I could make great strides in making money on the internet.

Perhaps my pride or conceit deserved a fall. I had a big fall going down the steps of the gents at Charing Cross. I crashed downwards banging my knee and left shoulder and hip. I thought I must have broken a bone or two.

To my amazement I could stand up with very little pain. All I have now is a swollen leg and a scratch or two and a greater awareness of the importance of keeping one’s balance!

No one stopped to give me a hand as I plummeted into the depths. Maybe they were rushing to catch a train. However, the caretaker ran to try and break my fall and help me to my feet. I made it home in one piece and was delighted to hear that Lewis Hamilton had won the Hungarian Grand Prix. Great to hear the national anthem once again.

How little we know about other members of the human race. How little we know even about our own neighbours and their lives.

On today’s walk on Saturday July 11th 2009,I met two of my neighbours. The son of one of them had hearly had his caravan stolen from in front of his house at 11 a.m. a day or so ago. Three men were involved and one was sawing away at the lock. They had a large car ready to tow the caravan away.

Fortunately a policeman lived nearby who saw suspicious activity going on. He walked towards the caravan with his doberman. The men took off.
A policeman can be a very useful neighbour!

As I walked up Wimborne Avenue, a large black dog started barking at me. I told it to shut up. Then I reflected that it was only doing its job – a similar one to the policeman’s! I felt a little guilty!

As I turned into Clarendon Way, another neighbour caught up with me. He had been in the Rifles in World War II. He was shot by ‘friendly fire’ in Italy. The bullets hit his tommy gun which he held by his side. The tommy gun probably saved his life although some bits of metal wounded him in the side.

Meanwhile his mother was back home in London enduring the blitz. She also experienced a miraculous escape. She was about to move forward at her house when intuition or an angel or God stopped her. At that moment a bomb hit the house throwing her into the air. Amazingly she landed without injury on a nearby bed!

About this time I was sitting outside my hut in a Japanese concentration camp in the middle of China. Eric Liddell of ‘Chariots of Fire’ fame was in the same camp.

A Japanese soldier was walking towards me spinning his pistol on his finger. Instinctively, I moved into our hut. The gun went off. The bullet might have hit me if I had stayed put. Another miraculous escape!

I can’t talk about consistency with any feeling of superiority. I have failed to write a blog post on this blog since May 2009. However I do walk consistenly once a day.

Today, Tuesday July 7th 2009, i delayed walking as there was the crashing noise of thunder followed by heavy rain throughout the day. Eventually I got out for my walk at about 7 p.m.

I soon met up with a neighbour and her little dog that I had not seen for a long time. We got round to the subject of death for some reason.
I commented that I would rather be murdered or even hung rather than endure a long painful terminal illness.

She described how the husband of her friend had come home after a day out and sat down asking for a cup of tea. Her friend came back to find him dead on the floor. She could console herself with the thought that this was exactly how he would have wished to go.

Later in Berens Way I noticed large numbers of parakeets flying around. I had not seen any before this in the heat wave. Maybe they prefer the cooler weather! I certainly do and would love to see days like today every day of the year. Thunder and rain makes life seem meaningful!

Back to the theme of consistency. Early this morning, I listened to a great video tape by David Wolfe. He said the secret of success could be summed up in one word – consistency. We consistenly clean our teeth ever day. This is a daily discipline. We all have the ability to express our discipline by doing things consistently.

Great athletes and those who excel never miss a workout or practice session. They gradually become extraordinary at what they do.

Wolfe used a great analogy – pumping water. We may need to pump away a long time before we see any results. Many give up believing they will never see results!

We may see a few drops of water and again stop pumping because we believe that such meagre results are not worth the effort. If only we had kept pumping we would have seen a steady flow of water.

Some give up when they see the steady flow of water and eventually lose these satisfying results. Consistent pumping or taking daily regular action is the solution and the secret of success in anything.

The power of belief is spoken about again and again whenever some kind of success is involved. Lee McIntyre, for example, teaches that you must believe in yourself and your products if you want to succeed on the internet.

Before heading off for my walk, I watched some of the London 10K road race today on Bank Holiday Monday (May 25th 2009). Kim Smith won the women’s race in 31 minutes and 36 seconds – a magnificent time.

Of course, belief was mentioned. One commentator said: “She believes in her ability and that she will be great.” Kim paid no heed to the other runners. Their reputations meant nothing to her.

Mo Farah won the men’s race. He, too, looked full of confidence and self-belief. He had to wait until he reached 7K’s to see results from his efforts when his nearest competitor, Koskai, dropped away and left him to run solo to victory. Mo finished in a great time of 27 minutes and 48 seconds.

I set off for my usual walk soon after the race ended. I did some weight lifting when I returned. I applied ‘Plod Forever’(see previous post) to my sit ups. I used ‘Count Forever’ for the situps as I counted them. I did three times my usual number of sit ups i.e. 150 instead of 50.

The world-famous explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, reached the summit of Mount Everest shortly before 1 am on 21 May 2009, despite having previously declared “no more mountains”.

He is the first British pensioner to ever reach the summit. He had a heart attack on his first attempt, was exhausted on his second and succeeded on his third! What an amazing man!

He, helpfully, explained the secret of his success. He had a simple plan. “I am just going to be endlessly repeating ‘Plod Forever’. Don’t expect to get there. Don’t think there is going to be a top to his mountain. Just ‘plod forever’. Imagine it is a mountain with no top. You just keep going and then you can’t be let down. You start getting some false hopes. Don’t! You’ve got to say ‘Plod Forever’. And that’s it. Don’t let other thoughts come in.”

The mind can only handle one thought at a time properly. Keep the thought you want in your mind by constant and unbroken repetition. Don’t allow thoughts of failure anywhere near the centre of your mind.

Today, Sunday May 24th 2009, I walked round the neighbourhood just before the start of the Monaco Formula One race. I gave ‘Plod Forever’ a try. It can get very boring when you walk the same route regularly. A phrase like ‘Plod Forever’ can definitely help whether you are walking or performing some seemingly endless task.

When I was at school in the Isle of Man many years ago, I found that endlessly repeating the one word ‘Faster’ helpful when doing cross country runs. The word did not make me fast but it probably succeeded in making me ‘faster’. This would not have been difficult!

Meanwhile, in Monaco, Jensen Button is leading the race. He had a similar plan to that of Sir Ranulph. Don’t think about winning the championship (the Everest of Formula One) Before the race he said:

“I have to take it race by race and practice by practice”

He believed that if you start thinking about winning the championship, you will play safe and no longer give 100%. Of course, at times, it is wise to accept second place rather than lose more points by giving 100% and crashing.

Coulthard, a former winner at Monaco, agreed with Jensen. Take the race corner by corner and lap by lap. At the moment with 49 laps out of 78 still to go, Jensen Button is still leading!

Drivers have to ‘keep going, keep going’ (in the words of one commentator) for two long hours.

Of course, one major difference between Sir Ranulph and Jensen is speed. When Sir Ranulph was asked how he was doing, he replied ‘Slow but sure’.

Jensen’s main aim is to go ‘Fast but sure’ Jensen is still leading followed by his ambitious partner Rubens Barrichello who does not want to play second fiddle to Jensen as he did with Michael Schumacher at Ferrari. Only 9 more laps to go. Jensen leads; Rubens follows! Another one two finish for the Brawn team if things stay this way.

Great lessons emerge from the Everest climb and the Monaco race. Focus your mind on the next step whether this involves a slow plod or a fast lap. Don’t allow doubts or distractions to cloud your key thoughts.

Jensen takes the chequered flag with Rubens second. Jensen has won his 5th race in 6. Someone shouts ‘Monaco, baby, YES!’ Button wins in MONACO!

Ross Brawn commented: “1st and 2nd It’s just stunning!… He’s exceeding everthing I thought possible.” Coulthard agreed:”This man is clearly world class. If he does not end up as world champion this year I will be amazed.”

Meanwhile, last year’s world champion, Lewis Hamilton, had had a lonely race starting from the rear. However he could still see a little sunshine. He remembered the words of Rocky in the first Rocky film: “I just want to see the end of the fight.” Lewis reached the end of the race having achieved some very fast lap times. He was already looking forward to next year:”I’ll be back next year to try and win!”

The London Marathon is underway today, 26th April 2009, on a sunny day.

Some runners are going slowly. They received the commendation of the commentators. David Coleman once advised runners to ‘start slow and go slower!’

Modern sports scientists have realised that running long distances is not especially good for you. Limiting possible injuries by running slowly is good advice. You might not win the race but you may live longer!

The British hope, Mara Yamauchi,is running with the leading group and is exceeding her personal best. She is in the 2:21 range.

Nearly all the top women Marathon runners are well over thirty. Mara has gradually been improving in each race and has gained the confidence from her improvement to be a front runner. Irena Mikitenko of Germany was followed closely by Mara in second place. Irena created a bit of a gap after about two hours.

Steve Cram commented that the more you prepare for the race the more you enjoy the experience. Some hardy souls, of course, just turn up on the day and hope for the best! I salute them. At least, they have the guts to attempt the race while I sit at home watching them struggle on TV!

The runners probably tick off the main milestones in their minds as they pass them – the Cutty Sark (under repair after a fire) is one of them.

The Isle of Dogs is another. Steve Cram, a mine of useful information, told Brendan Foster, his fellow commentator, that Henry VIII kept his hunting dogs on this island.

Brendan showed his appreciation: “I always learn something when you are here, Steve!”

Mara is running in second place and is aiming for a personal best time. She is over two minutes ahead of the pursuing group. Hopefully, Paula Radcliffe, will have recovered from an operation in time to run with Mara in the World Championships in the summer.

In the men’s race, the three Olympic medallists were leading the marathon. Samuel Wanjiru eventually won the London marathon in record breaking time.

2 hours 22 and 11 seconds was Irena’s winning time
2 hours 23 and 12 seconds was Mara’s personal best.

Meanwhile in Bahrain, Jensen Button won the Formula One Grand Prix. One interviewer asked Ross Brawn, the head of Brawn GP (the former Honda team)what the difference was between Honda F1 and Brawn GP

“Confidence” replied Ross Brawn. Nothing other than confidence can turn a team or an individual around. So far Jensen has won 3 out of 4 races and Brawn GP lead the constructors’ championship. They have about 50 points. Ferrari have only 3 points so far.

Today Wednesday 8th April 2009 I took my usual walk round the neighbourhood. Nothing was happening. It had already happened!

Two men from Maidstone had arrived at about 9.30 a.m. to install a new washing machine. This is almost like a television set as there is a screen showing you what is going on. It will take me a few days, if not years, to learn how to operate it!

If I run into a problem I might well take St Jerome’s advice:

“Solvitur ambulando. To solve a problem, walk around.”

Not many people in the UK take St Jerome’s advice. The following quote describes the typical British pedestrian:

“A pedestrian is someone who thought there were a couple of gallons left in the tank.”

Today, Friday 3rd April 2009, I set out to drive to some local shops. Almost immediately my path was blocked by cars queuing up to get along a road which had been narrowed to prevent lorries and other heavy vehicles crossing a weak bridge.

I turned round to take a different route. Soon my path was blocked by another queue of cars. I parked my car nearby and set off for a short walk. After a few minutes, the pavement disappeared and I had to climb a steep slope to access a parallel pathway.

Soon another steep slope came into view but this time steps helped me up. The road ahead had no pavements and was being tarmacked. The only people on the road were workers in helmets. I realized that the path was probably closed.

I continued my walk anyway trying to look as if I had every right to be there! No one questioned this right and I reached the end of the road. I walked through a gap in the barriers and spotted a notice saying

“PATH CLOSED!”

My sister commented that most people would have given up the journey long ago! I was probably helped by the fact that I did not realise that the path was officially closed. Sometimes what we don’t know can help us achieve goals we would otherwise have given up on.

Today’s drive and walk were a parable of life. You seldom fail to meet up with obstacles of various kinds en route to any destination or goal.
Keep going regardless and a path will usually open up even if it is officially closed!

The G20 summit met today in London on April 1st,2009 – April Fool’s day. The protestors so far have been non-violent except for a very few.

I walked round the neighbourhood in what felt like a summer’s day. One of my neighbours was laying bricks on a pathway not far along Marlings Park Avenue.

I passed on to him a great quote I found today in Bob Proctor’s ezine:

“”It is easy to sit up and take notice. What is difficult is getting up and taking action.”

Al Batt
Writer and Speaker

I was complimenting his bias towards action. Although he has retired he is always busy but not too busy. He just takes on jobs and tell people they may have to wait to get them completed. He is never short of a job as people value quality work.

When I returned home I spoke to my next door neighbour’s son who has been doing some tiling work with his dad. Their work was also quality work. However, it was so good that it made the other tiling look shabby by comparison!
