TANGOLANDO Featuring Sofia Tosello & Yuri Juárez

December 16 2011

Sofia Tosello together with Peruvian guitarist Yuri Juárez present a preview of their latest project called Tangolando including a variety of Latin American songs.

Tangolando is a journey made of sounds and shapes, from the River Plate to the Afro and Creole rhythms of the Peruvian Coast, a new and refreshing fusion that connects musical styles such as tango, milonga, lando, festejo, waltz all in one unique and innovative sound. The penetrating passion of the tango siding with the naughtiness of a milonga through the joyous festejo, with sounds of Peruvian cajón and bandoneon: the result is this production, born from the 21st century's new musical conscience and its need to integrate, also called "the fusion". The repertoire includes tango classics filtered through Peruvian rhythms, songs like Cambalache, Vuelvo al Sur, Naranjo en Flor, Nostalgias, Volver, Milonga Sentimental, that are treated with finesse and a stylistic intent, on the technique as well as the interpretation.

Originally from Argentina, Sofa Tosello's music is rooted in the variety of Latin American cancion traditions, including tango, chacarera, bolero filin, son, zamba, and bossa nova. Tosello prefers to see herself as a border-crosser, not bound by the logic of genre. Christopher Loundon, writing in Jazz Times, notes "The purity of Tosello's voice is matched by the vibrancy of her emotional palette and inventiveness of her cross-cultural technique. The next wave in Latin American Jazz may well begin with Tosello".

Yuri Juárez is a guitarist, arranger and composer from Lima, specializing in Afro-Peruvian music, folk and fusion. Yuri has shared the stage and recorded with the likes of Eva Ayllón, Susana Baca, Chaqueta Piaggio Ebelin Ortiz, Pilar de la Hoz, iconic Peruvian composers such as Kiri Escobar and Javier Lazo, and trail blazing bands including the Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Sextet, Novalima, Teatro del Milenio and Sin Líneas en el Mapa. In 2008 Yuri releases his first album, Afroperuano, which achieves great success in domestic and international criticism and in 2009 receives the Latin Jazz Corner Awards in the categories of Best Afro-Peruvian Jazz Album and Best Latin Jazz Guitarist debut.

Valerie Naranjo and Barry Olsen return to El Taller bringing the intricate rhythms
of Africa in what promises to be an unforgettable performance.

St. Anne's (of Brooklyn) Gyil Monsters, a second grade gyil ensemble will be opening
the concert. Bring your children and be inspired, and rejuvenated.

The gyil is a West African marimba. Its special sound is believed, in its culture, to carry a vibration which restores and maintains health and balance. The wood that forms the gyil's keyboard is gleaned from the former homes of the "kontombe", the spirit keepers of beauty and good. Permission to master the instrument is granted to few. The music is unbelievably complicated, yet tuneful, soulful, danceable, and simple in its essence. The gyil and drums gangaa and kuar's most important functions are to diagnose and treat illness and to transport the soul of a deceased from this world to the next.

Valerie Naranjo has been the house band Percussionist for "Night Live" for
over 16 years as well as performing in Broadway's The Lion King, and with The Philip Glass Ensemble.
She is a descendent of the Ute Native American Nation and
hails from Colorado, where she credits her mother, Pauline for suggesting she study
drumming at an early age.

Known for her pioneering efforts in West African keyboard percussion, Valerie
studied for 15 years with Maestro Kakraba Lobi (master of the gyil - West African
solo marimba) from Ghana, has been featured with him on CNN, and has toured
and recorded 4 CDs with him and Barry Olsen.

Barry Olsen began his career in the late 70's playing trombone in New York's Latin
dance music scene. He has recorded and performed all over the world including
Paul Simon, Tito Puente, David Byrne, Celia Cruz, and Marc Anthony.

Barry is the pianist for the Latin-Jazz group Syotos and is featured on their 5 recordings.
On marimba and percussion he is frequently heard in the orchestra of the hit Broadway
musical "The Lion King."

Barry starte performing Lobi and Dagara music from northern Ghana in 1988,
playing the drums known as kuar and gangaa, which accompany the gyil.

About Zack Glass
Growing up in New York's Lower East Side and coming from an artistic family,
Zack Glass was exposed to a wide variety of music from an early age. By the time
he turned 13, he had taken up piano and electric guitar and was beginning to write
his own songs. Listening to classic rock and punk music at a young age, his taste
changed when he started going through his parent's record collection and discovered an array of music including Reggae and African.

After high school, Zack had the opportunity to travel to West Africa and Latin America
several times which greatly influenced his music and led him to play guitar for Reggae
and African bands as well as accompanying a steel pan player from time to time. He
started his own reggae band and was writing and singing his own songs, but by the end
of the 90's he started to see the limitations of Reggae and began to explore world
music. Soon after, he took a leap of faith and began a solo career. Since then, Zack
has explored almost every style of popular music most recently being influenced by
folk, country and classic rhythm and blues. Zack has now come full circle; returning
to the blues based music he grew up on. Zack's first album, Days of Innocence, was recorded in Brazil where he lived for three years. He currently spends half his time in Brazil, where he performs and records and half his time in New York where he does the same.

Though young, Zack has already had the honor to share the stage with some of this century's greatest musicians; Steve Earle, Keb' Mo', Patti Smith, Suzanne Vega, Al MacDowell, Andrew Sterman and Eddie Bobe. Zack has also had the pleasure to perform with some of today's up and coming stars; Vampire Weekend, The National, and Jazz Trumpeter Mark Rapp. He is in the process of releasing his second album, Southern Skies, an eclectic album infusing many different styles.

Ruben and Zack will be accompanied by: Michael Wimberly (percussion), Don Babatunde Eaton (voice), Michael J. Campbell (percussion), Wally Irizarry (guitar).

El Taller is thrilled to present Gabriel Ríos, an up and coming singer-songwriter from Puerto Rico.
Gabriel's music fuses together a wide variety of genres including rock, punk, hip hop, and salsa.

He only recently arrived in New York, after several years of studying, recording and touring in Belgium.
For Gabriel, Belgium was a welcoming place. A fleeting five years, he earned a Fine Arts Diploma and a
unique place in the local music scene. But finding himself far from home, songs played by his father and
grandfather began to visit him in dreams. In a cold attic and with a more than worthy sidekick (Jo Bogaert of
Technotronic), he concocted a blend of Puerto Rican rhythms and Belgium surrealism that churned through computers
and samplers and became two consecutive albums: Ghostboy and Angelhead.

The European festival scene is an enticing and powerful force. Crowds cheering, brass blowing, people knowing the
words to your songs. And let's not forget the good food. Feels like one could stay there forever, but Gabriel started
to feel the pull of a smaller, organic, and more intimate set up. Flanked by Kobe Proesmans and Jeff Neve, he hit
the theater circuit with a new sound and a new album. His latest, The Dangerous Return is a stripped-down
collection of songs featuring piano, percussion, and guitar interwoven with whimsical tales of growing older and
of the end of the world as we know it.

And so it was that the need to fly proved irresistible once again. It was only after his arrival in Brooklyn,
New York, that he realized with a strange grin on his face that he had forgotten to pack.

Beginning in September 2010, El Taller formed a collaboration with Spanish students
Eric Darton and Katie Kehrig to create Threepenny University - a new educational
collective where "Everybody teaches, everybody learns". The collective faculty/
students of Threepenny University have been meeting on a monthly basis to develop a
pedogogy and curriculum while also brainstorming ideas for events, courses and
fieldtrips all with this mission of community learning in mind.

About the project, Darton says "...what we have come to think of as education may
be recast as something more than the refinement of various fields of cognition and
the production of experts in those fields. The opportunity now exists for education
to be broadened, and deepened, into a process of actively seeking and constructing
new systems of survival." The relational nature of Threepenny University allows for
all who engage to participate as faculty in the constantly unfolding, ever-transforming
process.

With that, El Taller and Threepenny University open to the community for a special
jam session led by guitarists Victor Weiss and Demian Palombo.

Says Victor: "I've often thought about the fact that when musicians play together,
there are those kinds of moments, when you can just listen to the music as a whole,
when something special is created, when egos disappear. Maybe there's an art to
playing with other people, maybe it's the art of listening. Maybe this can't,
or shouldn't be over analyzed with words, maybe just learned by experience,
by just playing with others."

In these times of cruelty and savagery, it is of utmost importance that we always work to "ensayar la alegría y el canto". Victor Jara, the voice of the Chilean people, dedicated his life to that mission. Shortly after the President Salvador Allende was overthrown in September 1973, Victor Jara was taken prisoner, tortured and brought to an untimely and unwarranted death by machine gun fire for refusing to stop singing. Both in life and after his death, Victor became a symbol of the fight against the perpetual struggle for human rights throughout Latin America. For us, his life is a reminder that we, too, should never stop singing for harmony, love and social justice.

And so, on March 12 at 8PM, El Taller Latino Americano, along with filmmakers John Travers and John Summa, celebrate the life and music of this folk legend with a "peña", a musical gathering. "Peñas" were made popular in the 1960's by folk musicians like Jara and Violeta Parra in Chile, while at the same time Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie were holding their own American folk music "hootenannies" at clubs like New York's The Bitter End. We invite you to join us to sing the songs of Victor in celebration of his life and his music. Travers and Summa will also be showing clips from their upcoming documentary film "The Resurrection of Victor Jara".
