Greetings Yahoo! Music mavens, audio auteurs, and digital divas. James the Yahoo! Butler here, not to serve up with diligence and vim the weekly playlist haps, as that is the domain of the venerable Radish, but to apprise you stat-wise how Yahoo Music Unlimited (YMU sounds so much better than USC and UCLA, isn’t it?) continues to bring you the newest of the new music when you want it, how you want it.

How best to quantify this? Oh, come on, admit it, you like these numbers. It’s like comparing your SAT scores with your chums at Starbucks at lunch. Heaven forbid that a butler should deign to formulate a mission statement. My services tend toward the mundane and the pedestrian. My task here (butlers have tasks, they’re tactical; strategy falls to the milords and miladies whom they serve): I want to show you how we stack up in terms of content against the competition. It is like college football, isn’t it? The competition? There’s iTunes, duh, not to mention Rhapsody. Mostly we compete against ourselves. With all due respect to John Donne, Yahoo Music is an island unto itself. There’s always room to improve our service to you.

The content? It made the most sense to compare YMU’s holdings to a neutral benchmark against which no one could cry foul. We chose both Billboard’s Top 200 as well as the College Musical Journal 200, each of which come out monthly. Anyone have a problem with that? Good.

In addition to benchmark comparisons, the Butler will discuss the Weekly New Releases.

Please note that published results do not reflect Yahoo’s subsequent to-publication efforts to secure digital rights to albums and songs. That number will improve over time. The goal? A moving target of 100%.

For those who wonder where these lists come from – we don’t pull them from thin air, for heaven’s sake – here are the nuts and bolts. Those findings you can verify yourself. We take a snapshot of the Billboard 200 on the 3rd Thursday on each month and the College Music Journal on the 4th Friday. The in-house Yahoo!-generated New Releases list comes out each Friday which we then combine with Monday’s list of priority new releases to create a master Weekly New Releases list that we publish on Tuesday. We layer those three lists with comparisons to iTunes and Rhapsody in terms of downloadability and/or streamability as well as audio quality. (Disclaimer: we just search YMU, iTunes and Rhapsody as any consumer would for the titles so it’s certainly possible we made a mistake or that the music has entered their catalog since our comparison. we make every effort to be accurate, though.)
Because the various comparisons represent static representations – a digital snapshot – of a moment in time, the Butler will also discuss dynamic representations when appropriate, when significant, when interesting that will show how we move over time in terms of percentages of songs captured, how we’re moving over time head to head with the competition.

Finally, just for your listening pleasure, a link to the playlist(s) under discussion will accompany each Butler blog.

For this first entry I tender a trayful of tasty tidbits and soundbytes.

Did you notice any patterns or at least a glaring tendency? Right, just one. Over this period of time YMU consistently outperformed iTunes and Rhapsody in terms of downloadable and streamable songs. Just as one swallow does not a summer make, neither do three weeks of New Releases a dynasty make. Not bad. Stay tuned though, for as Tony Bennett, the Jose Gonzalez of my generation crooned, the best is yet to come.

Yahoo! Music welcomes a new friend to the fold today, and this one brought gifts.

Together with MasterCard, we have taken the already inexpensive Yahoo! Music Unlimited product to a new, ridiculous low price. If you haven’t yet subscribed, this is the offer you’ve been holding out for.

From now until October 4, if you purchase an annual subscription to Yahoo! Music Unlimited with your MasterCard, you will get a second year free. For our PC service, this works out to be $2.50 a month for 2 years. To put it into context, here are a few other things in your life that likely cost about $2.50 a month:

– the extra gas you use for keeping your golf clubs in the trunk
– the accumulated cost of coffee you have spilled over the month
– depreciation expense of your favorite jeans
– operational costs of the feng shui fountain you bought at Target
So put the golf clubs in the garage and pass the savings on to music. If you are a Visa regular, pull out the dormant Mastercard for this special offer. For the price of 2.5 downloads a month, you can have unlimited access to our catalogue of approximately 2 million songs. This offer is available for Yahoo! Music Unlimited To-Go as well, which saves you $120.

You can go here to buy your 2 year subscription.

Hello, and welcome back to another edition of Top Events. If you’re a regular T.E. reader, then you know that so far, this season has not exactly been the summer of love. Between Paul and Heather, Heather and Richie, Nicole Richie and DJ AM, Paris and Paris, Carmen and Dave, Travis and Shanna, Eminem and Kim, and Prince and, um, Mrs. Prince–not to mention those persistent rumors of an impending Britney/K-Fed divorce and the recent release of Nick Lachey’s Jessica-centric breakup album–nary a week has gone by without some mention of a celebrity split. And hey, this week is no different! The latest rock ‘n’ roll couple to call it quits is, somewhat unsurprisingly, Almost Famous actress Kate Hudson and her lushly bearded husband of six years, Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson. (Conveniently for us, this announcement neatly and surely, purely coincidently comes the same week that we’re offering an exclusive Black Crowes download in YMU. We couldn’t buy advertising like that!) Anyhoo, reliable source Us Weekly reports that homewrecking heartthrob Owen Wilson (Kate’s co-star in You, Me & Dupree) is to blame for the Robinsons’ martial collapse. Which, of course, brings new meaning to Owen’s reputation as a wedding crasher…

But don’t worry–all is not lost. Luckily, summer ‘06 will bring forth a whole new slew of celebrity twosomes that sound like true matches made in pop heaven to us. See, in an attempt to fill the gaping void left in Fox’s programming schedule after the finale of So You Think You Can Dance (congrats to Benji, by the way), mad genius Simon Cowell has returned to the airwaves with what we’ve already decided is our new favorite TV show, Celebrity Duets. Yes, Simon has come up with the bright idea to team seasoned singers (Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Aaron Neville) with golden-throated, B-minus-list celebs (Cheech Marin, Lucy “Xena” Lawless, Queer Eye fifth wheel Jai Rodriguez, Hal Sparks, Lea Thompson) for what will hopefully be the most compelling televised trainwreck duets since the infamous Meat Loaf/Katharine McPhee and Clay Aiken/Michael Sandecki pairings on this year’s American Idol finale. Seriously, if there’s any reality show that will make us switch the channel from VH1’s craptastic Flavor Of Love, it’s gonna be Celebrity Duets. Heck, even Justin Timberlake, who trashed American Idol in the press this week, might watch this show. We smell an Emmy…

OK, much like Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson, we have to split. But come back next Friday for more amusing, bemusing, and downright confusing music news. Until then, goodnight, and good music.

Well, this week for Heather Mills, the long and winding road led to Paul McCartney’s securely bolted door. Yes, despite Paul’s numerous blog posts insisting that his split from his second wife is completely amicable, things seem to be getting to get ugly in the Maccas’ world. First, penny-pinching Paul allegedly froze his joint bank account with Heather, and wrote a letter to her complaining about three bottles of cleaning liquid that she took from his house. Then the future former Mrs. McCartney came home to find that her estranged hubby had actually changed the locks on his doors. And finally, when Heather–the woman that many tabloids are now dubbing the one-legged bandit–subsequently broke in to the ex-Beatle’s locked home, both the police and the paparazzi fled to the scene in droves. Now the warring couple have reportedly hired the same lawyers who handled the multi-billion-dollar divorce between Prince Charles and Princess Diana. So, will Heather’s high-profile attorney be able to secure a few more bottles Mr. Clean and Lemon Pledge in her divorce settlement? We’ll give you all the dirt later on…

Of course, the Mills-McCartney divorce isn’t the only celebrity split making headlines this week. Former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and his Playmate wife of less than two years, Shanna Moakler–the rock ‘n’ roll odd couple whose supposedly happy union was once chronicled on basic cable’s Meet The Barkers–have also decided that, well, they’d like to meet other people. But to be honest, given the unexciting existence they led on their incredibly uneventful reality show (which was only slightly more compelling than a test pattern), it’s no surprise that the magic soon died for these newlyweds, just as it did for Barkers viewers by episode 2…

However, the most vicious breakup of the week is actually the one between Ohio emo band Hawthorne Heights and their label, Victory Records. Following similarly acrimonious exoduses by former Victory bands Thursday and Taking Back Sunday, this week Hawthorne Heights blasted Victory honcho Tony Brummel on their website–calling him “a man that cares more about his ego and bank account than the bands themselves” and claiming they had nothing to do with the Victory’s controversial anti-Ne-Yo campaign (Ne-Yo’s debut album came out the same day as Hawthorne’s latest, much to Brummel’s chagrin). The band finally declared, “We’re done being abused.” Wow, seems like Ohio is for haters, huh? So, will more Victory bands speak up? Will Brummel defend his business practices? Heck, will Brummel hire Princess Di’s lawyer to sort out this mess? We’ll just have to follow this feud to find out…

OK, much like the couples above, we have to split. But come back next Friday, and until then, goodnight, and good music.

Well, this week the Ashlee backlash (or “Backlashlee,” as it will henceforth be known) continues apace. Sure, A.Simp seems to have her acid reflux under control now, and as far as we know she hasn’t terrorized any innocent McDonald’s employees lately, but her recent controversial cover story for Marie Claire magazine has once again made her the Simpson sister everyone loves to hate. See, in her MC interview, Ash extolled the virtues of self-acceptance, saying, “Everyone is made differently, and that’s what makes us beautiful and unique. I want girls to look in the mirror and feel confident.” She then engaged in a perfectly PC photo-opp (painting some sort of vaguely girl-powered mural with a bunch of “real” female teens) in an attempt to “get women to appreciate their diverse shapes and sizes.” However, by the time the issue hit newsstands, it was apparent that Ashlee hadn’t exactly appreciated the diverse shape and size of her own nose–and possibly her chin–as she was suddenly looking mighty different. (Guess when she sang “Pieces Of Me,” she was referring to whatever was left over after her plastic surgeons allegedly had their way with her.) Readers subsequently went positively postal, writing so many letters protesting Ashlee’s hypocrisy that MC’s editor has actually decided to expand the mag’s September reader-mail column. But you know, if Ashlee would just get that talent-transplant operation she so desperately needs, we’re sure all would be forgiven…

By the way, the 2006 Video Music Awards nominations were announced this week, and much to the delight of Marie Claire subscribers everywhere, poor Ashlee was completely overlooked except in the Best Cinematography category. (And let’s face it, it probably took a lot of effort to make Ashlee not look like a post-op freak, so whoever was behind the camera during that video shoot truly deserves to win.) However, that’s not the most shocking shutout of this year’s VMAs. That dubious honor would go to Pink’s “Stupid Girls,” which–despite being the most talked-about video of ‘06 (Oprah practically dedicated an entire episode to it)–only received one measly nomination, for Best Pop Video, while being passed over in all other categories, including Video Of The Year. What possible explanation could there be for this snub? Did Paris Hilton or Ashlee’s elder sister Jessica place a couple threatening phone calls to VMA judging committee or something? Whatever the reason, we think Pink should retaliate by recording a song called “Stupid Judges”…

OK, it’s time to go, but do come back next Friday for more amusing, bemusing, and downright excitment-oozing news. Until then, goodnight, and good music.

In playlisting news this week the Guardian asks a bunch of musicians to name their favorite summer songs. Thus Spake Drake lists the first 10 videos played on MTV when the channel debuted 25 years ago. (with video links) Slate speaks about the growing compilation CD music market, which now accounts for 25% of records sales in Europe. Fullmanator has tackled two more television series playlists: Nip/Tuck, and CSI: Miami. YMU Playa creates a playlist of songs that profile the UK electronica label Ninja Tune. Stylus lists their top 10 favorite pronunciations found in song. AfterEllen lists the top 10 love song covers for lesbians. The Rugs Don’t Work creates a preemptive soundtrack playlist for the upcoming film The Last Kiss. And finally, Lucas Gonze has created a Yahoo Music Engine plugin that will display the Yahoo Radish directly in YME, so if you get stuck trying to decide what to hear, you’re only one click away!

In previous Yahoo! Music Blog playlisting columns we’ve talked about the themed playlist, the songwriter playlist, the mixtape playlist and the record label playlist. This week I’d like to talk about the “News Story Playlist”. That is, a list inspired by, and built around a specific news story. The bigger the story the more playlists you’ll find floating around. For example, hurricane Katrina, 9/11 and the war in Iraq have inspired thousands of playlists, but any news story is fair game. It’s only a matter of time until most news stories on the web will give you the option to listen to a “soundtrack” as you read. Like the bumper music on a show like NPR’s All Things Considered, you can tie the subject matter of the story to music. See examples below:

Chupacabra Caught in Texas!
Play It! COLEMAN, Texas — A Texas farmer may have found what some would call a “chupacabra,” a legendary animal known for sucking the blood out of goats. Reggie Lagow set a trap last week after a number of his chickens and turkeys were killed. What he found in his trap was a mix between a hairless dog, a rat and a kangaroo. [more]

Bird Flu Blues
Play It! (CNN) ABUJA, Nigeria — The deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has been found in two more Nigerian states, the Agricultural Ministry said Thursday. The strain has been confirmed at two farms in Kano state and one in adjoining Plateau state, said Tope Ajakaiye, a ministry spokesman. Sixteen other countries have reported outbreaks of the H5N1 strain of avian flu in birds. Human cases of the deadly strain have been found in seven of those countries.
Rap Star Proof Shot Dead in Detroit
Play It! (Detroit Free Press) — Outside Detroit’s hip-hop scene, rapper Proof was best known as Eminem’s close friend, but the 32-year-old artist who was shot to death Tuesday morning was a mega-talent in his own right, a lightning-tongued MC and improviser who won Source Magazine’s national rap battle in 1999. He was young, gifted and, like far too many African-American males, died long before his time.
Gasoline Price Blues
Play It! WASHINGTON (CNN) — Pressured by looming midterm elections, sinking poll numbers and angry consumers, President Bush is expected to outline a four-point plan on Tuesday aimed at fighting rising gasoline prices. The speech, set for 10:05 a.m. ET in Washington, comes after Bush ordered a federal investigation into possible cheating or illegal manipulation in the gasoline markets.
Producer Dallas Austin Arrested in Dubai
Play It! DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Grammy-winning hip-hop producer Dallas Austin faces drug possession charges in the United Arab Emirates that could land him a lengthy prison term, Middle Eastern legal sources said Tuesday. [more]

You will notice that the above playlists fall into two categories. The first are those directly connected to music. For example, the story about music producer Dallas Austin being arrested on drug charges in Dubai features a set of songs that he’s produced. As people read about his unfortunate predicament, they can actually hear his work. In this case the music adds real value to the news.

The same is true of the story that reports on the death of rap star Proof. Those not familiar with his music can simply click a button and listen while they read the story. The News can drive music discovery and sales and the music can add value for news publications and blogs.

The other type is a bit more fun. Any story that is not directly related to music can have associations based on the subject matter. For example, the list “Gasoline Price Blues” kicks off with “A Gallon of Gas” by the Kinks, which has the opening lyric:

“I’ve been waiting for years to buy a brand new Cadillac
But now that I’ve got one I want to send it right back
I can’t afford the gas to fill my luxury limousine
But even if I had the dough no one’s got no gasoline”

This song is the perfect accompaniment to a story about the rising price of gas and the frustration of the American people. You can finds songs for any subject under the sun with a little poking around in YMU. If you get the inkling, share your own news story playlist over at the YMU Playlisters group.

Finally, I leave you with some other playlist ideas from the Radish.

Beatles Covers: Acoustic

Play At this point, everyone on the planet knows about the resistance to making the Beatles catalogue available for online distribution. It’s only a matter of time until you can download and stream the music of the Beatles. A good analogy would be if the Beatles refused to make their music available on CD when that medium was introduced in 1982. Sure they could have continued to sell cassette tapes and LPs, but as the demand for the CD became dominant, the Beatles would have to give the people what they wanted or lose ground to pirates. The refusal to join the Internet music revolution, I would argue, has hurt Beatles’ catalogue sales. Sure, a band as iconic and important as the Beatles doesn’t need the Internet to spread the word, the music speaks for itself, but as new generations turn to the web completely for music discovery will they still discover the Beatles in the same numbers as previous generations? Maybe, but maybe not. And if they do discover them, will they acquire the MP3s by buying the complete Beatles library on CD and ripping them, or will they continue to turn to P2P, AllofMP3.com, public libraries and friends?
By continuing to hold out for the best possible money-making model, the copyright owners are losing revenue every single day. Will increased profit per download or stream make up the difference? Who knows, but in the meantime there are literally thousands of Beatles cover songs available online reaping the benefits. This playlist contains 50 classic Beatles tracks, all of them arranged with an acoustic backbone. Listen to other Beatles-related playlists here.

The Best of 1981

Play 1981 was a year of transition in the world of music and in my life. It’s the year my family moved from Scranton, PA to Cape Cod, MA. It was tough leaving my friends at the time, but it was the best thing my parents could have done for my future. Where would you rather live? We moved when I was in the eighth grade and it was an exciting time for a young 13-year-old boy. Crazy technology was exploding all around us; cable television, the Walkman, video games and a new channel called MTV, which opened the world of music to many an impressionable young person. Music and American radio were seeing the pinnacle of arena rock. Bands like The Rolling Stones, The Police, The Kinks, Queen, The Who, Rush and The Cars released important albums in 1981 that would become classic rock staples for decades to come. In addition, college radio and MTV were helping to launch the careers of bands that were an “alternative” to the popular rock of the day. U2, R.E.M., The Cure, The Psychedelic Furs, Adam & The Ants, The Tom Tom Club, Romeo Void and others released albums in 1981 that would see serious airplay on the fledgling MTV network. Heavy metal was become more popular and American punk was coming into it’s own. Funk and R&B were still hot, and rap was in it’s infancy. Disco on the other hand, was on it’s way out. This playlist includes over 6 hours of the most critically acclaimed popular music of 1981. The playlist lacks country, blues and jazz for the sake of continuity.

The “Woe Is Me” Classic Rock Playlist

Play I saw Willie Nelson and John Fogerty in concert last night at the Verizon Amphitheatre in Charlotte, NC. It was a bit depressing to see Willie having to share the bill with Fogerty, and to make matters worse, the venue was only about half-full. Willie Nelson is a living American legend and at 73 years old, the chance to see him in concert won’t be an option for too much longer. Both shows were great and we had good seats, but my depression over the poor attendance was highlighted by the Fogerty song “Lodi“, which speaks about the tough life of a struggling musician. When I think of depressing music the blues come to mind first, followed by the Smiths and Morrissey, they take the “woe is me” genre to a whole new level. But “Lodi” had me pondering self-pity songs in the world of classic rock. When you think of classic rock, the first thing that comes to mind is P-A-R-T-Y, self-pity is one of the last things most correlate with the genre. This put the bug in me to collect the best of depressing classic rock songs. The resulting playlist contains over 3 hours of dispiriting AOR-friendly rock that gives Morrissey a run for his money. If you want to wallow in your own self-pity click play and rock on.
