<p><em>recollection</em> is the third in a year-long series of exhibitions that feature the work of faculty from the School of Art, Design, and Art History at San Diego State University.&nbsp; The artists included work in a variety of materials, sculpture, printmaking, painting, ceramics, and video installation—a diversity that is representative of the School’s program.</p>

<p>Richard Baker received a BFA degree from the Kansas City Art Institute and a MFA degree from the University of Cincinnati. He has exhibited extensively in this country, in Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, Tucson, and in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, Cirrus Gallery, Artspace, Fine Arts Gallery, UC Irvine, and Fisher Gallery, USC. He has also exhibited in Hakone and Tokyo, Japan, Venice, Italy and Berlin, Germany. </p>

<p>Mr. Baker&#8217;s work is included in permanent collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California Center for the Arts, Esconcico, CA, Tokyo Central Art Museum, as well as numerous private collections. He has received critical reviews of his work in publications including Art News, Images and Issues, LAICA Journal, ArtWeek, Los Angeles Times, and Japan Times. He has been a member of the stable of artists at Cirrus Gallery in Los Angeles since 1981.<br />

<p>Michele Burgess works in printmaking, painting, sculpture, and book art. She is co-director of Brighton Press—an internationally known publisher of limited edition fine press artist’s books—where she creates her artist’s books and collaborates with other artists and poets. In 2009, her book, Sleeping Inside the Glacier, her third collaboration with poet Sandra Alcosser, was included in the “Book as Art” exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. and the McMullen Museum of Art in Boston, Massachusetts. A retrospective of her work was held in 2004 at the Museum of American Art in Giverny, France, and traveled to the Mandeville Special Collections Library at the University of California, San Diego. </p>

<p>Her collaborative work with poets and artists was featured in an exhibition of Brighton Press’s work in book form and other media in 2004 at the Oceanside Museum of Art, in Oceanside, California. Burgess’s work is in public collections across the country, including the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts in San Francisco, Fresno Art Museum, Harvard University, Library of Congress, Indiana University, Stanford University Library, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Newberry Library in Chicago, the New York Public Library, and the Toledo Art Museum. </p>

<p>Burgess has been exhibiting actively for 30 years and has served as guest lecturer, curator, and artist-in-residence at numerous museums, universities, and arts organizations. Her work is represented by the Rift Gallery in Rinconada, New Mexico. She received her BA in Fine Arts from the University of San Diego and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. <br />

<p>Richard Burkett received the B.A. degree in Art from Lawrence University in 1973, and the M.F.A. degree in both ceramics and photography from Indiana University in 1986. For ten years after graduating from Lawrence University he ran his own pottery studio, the Wild Rose Pottery, in Bainbridge, Indiana, making salt-glazed stoneware and porcelain. Since receiving his M.F.A. he has taught ceramics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and at San Diego State University  since 1989. His work in clay has been shown internationally, and ranges from functional wheel-thrown pottery to sculptural objects using a wide variety of forming processes and media.</p>

<p>Richard Burkett has traveled extensively in Ecuador several times over the past fifteen years, researching and photographing Ecuadorian potters, with a focus on documenting indigenous pottery cultures in the Amazon basin.&nbsp; One of the first ceramists to make extensive use of computers and the Internet, Burkett has lectured internationally on ceramics and the Internet at conferences in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland. He has traveled to Jingdezhen, China to study porcelain making in this city near the original source of porcelain clays. He is the author of HyperGlaze, educational glaze calculation software for artists, students and teachers, and the co-author of the sixth edition of Ceramics: A Potter’s Handbook, one of the most widely used ceramics textbooks. Richard Burkett recently curated an international group of forty porcelain artists and wrote essays for the book Porcelain Masters: major works by leading artists.<br />

<p>Joanne Hayakawa was born and raised in southern California.&nbsp; She received a BA degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a MFA from the University of Washington, Seattle.&nbsp; She has taught at San Diego State University since 1982. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country in invitational as well as juried exhibitions.&nbsp; She has had solo exhibitions in Tampa, Florida, Los Angeles, Newark, Delaware, Knoxville, Tennessee, and San Diego (most notably at Quint Contemporary Art, La Jolla, Canon Gallery, Carlsbad, California, and Hyde Gallery, La Mesa, California.&nbsp; Her work has been included in many books, periodicals, and has been collected by private and public agencies including the City of San Diego and the City of Spokane.&nbsp; She has received critical reviews from Robert L. Pincus, Elaine Levin and Peter Frank.&nbsp; Finally, she has lectured on her work and public art most recently on the west coast and Italy, Faenza and Cortona.</p>

<p>For the past four years, Joanne Hayakawa has also served as one of fifteen Commissioners for the San Diego Commission for Art and Culture, invited by Victoria Hamilton, Executive Director of the Commission and appointed by Mayor, Jerry Sanders.&nbsp; As a Commissioner, she also sits on the Public Art Committee and The Strategic Outreach Committee and Communications Advisory Committee.<br />

<a name="richard_keely"><b>Richard Keely</b></p>

<p>Richard Keely is an artist and educator from Southern California. Originally trained as a painter Richard’s work during the last fifteen years has turned towards sculpture, photography and installation. With the sculptural work Richard is concerned with transforming ordinary objects into visually dense wall pieces that evoke an array of emotive possibilities. Richard&#8217;s Installation projects have been collaborations with San Diego artists Lynn Hendrick and Anna O’Cain. With these installations Keely, Hendrick, and O’Cain explore ideas concerning the visceral side of accumulating, storing, preserving, and communicating ideas and information. </p>

<p>Richard’s work has a national reputation including recent solos exhibitions at gallery 4016 in Los Angeles and CAD/XO Gallery in Chicago and recent collaborations with Anna O’Cain at Ben Maltz Gallery (Otis School of Art, Los Angeles), Art Around Adams and the Spruce Street Forum in San Diego. Additional collaborations with O&#8217;Cain include INSITE 2000 in San Diego and a Ceremonial performance at Beyond Baroque in Los Angeles. Richard has also exhibited his work and given lectures at several well-known Universities and has been a “Visiting Artist” at Oberlin College and Montana State University. In 1996 he was awarded a grant from Art Matters in New York. Richard has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa and has lived and studied Chinese painting in Taipei, Taiwan. Currently Richard is living in San Diego CA and is an Associate Professor of Art at San Diego State University, where he teaches sculpture for the School of Art, Design and Art History. <br />

<span class="credits_text">Arzu Ozkal</span></span><b>Arzu Ozkal</b></p>

<p>Arzu Ozkal is a Turkish born media artist and designer. Her practice engages with different interpretations of the body and its relationship to the environment. She raises questions about dogmas, traditions, laws, and patriarchal value systems through videos, public interventions and performances. Ozkal received her MFA from the Department of Visual Studies at University at Buffalo (SUNY) and BFA from Bilkent University.</p>

<p>Her work has been exhibited broadly in exhibitions and festivals nationally and internationally. Prior to joining San Diego State University as Assistant Professor of Graphic Design in Fall 2011, she spent three years on the faculty in the Art Department at Oberlin College teaching new media practices.<br />

<p>Ms Struble is a painter whose work has dealt with decaying corners of Baltimore, Brooklyn and Barcelona through a socio-environmental lens. Her last show, Landsmen, opened in New York at Lombard-Freid Projects in 2011, and explored the Brooklyn Navy Yard as well as transformed military sites in the Marin Headlands where she recently completed a residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts. Her large, colorful oil paintings have been shown at the Cleveland MOCA, at Angles Gallery in Santa Monica, and Artspace in New Haven, among others and Ms Struble has completed residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Can Serrat in Catalonia, and the Andratx Cultural center in Mallorca. She has taught at Common Ground in New York, through the Consortium of Advanced Studies in Barcelona, and has been a visiting artist/lecturer at the University of Wisconsin Madison and the University of Illinois Chicago. She received an MFA in Painting from Yale University in 2006.</p>
