“The Inexorable Rise in Partnerships in Sport? Reflections on Theory, Research and Practice”

Wednesday 2nd December 2009 – 6.00pm

Dr Iain Lindsay, University of Southampton

In this presentation Iain Lindsay will argue that the UK government’s recent promotion of the concept of partnerships in sport as a novel development is, at best, something of a fallacy. Sport policy documents since Sport in the Community: The Next Ten Years have promoted partnerships as a key policy making and delivery mechanism at all levels in sport. Iain Lindsey's presentation will review the ‘inexorable rise’ in partnerships in sport and offer some reflections on ways in which partnership practice and research can be developed.

“The Regulation of Football Disorder: A Case of Punishment Without Trial?”

Wednesday 9th December 2009 – 6.00pm

Dr Mark James, Reader in Law, Salford Law School

As the England national team has now qualified for next year’s FIFA World Cup Finals in South Africa, the police and Crown Prosecution Service can begin once again to prepare their strategies for preventing football hooligans from travelling to the tournament. In this presentation, Mark James will examine the role of section 14B Football Spectators Act 1989 in preventing outbreaks of football hooliganism and its use by the police and the courts to prevent spectators who have not been convicted of a football-related offence from attending high-profile matches. He will end by questioning the legality of the procedure by which Football Banning Orders can be imposed on spectators who are only suspected of being involved with football-related disorder.

Juan de Dios Crespo, Ruiz Huerta & Crespo Sports Lawyers (Spain)

In this presentation, Juan de Dios Crespo, one of Europe’s leading sports lawyers, addresses the following key questions: (1) Is there really a contradiction between the outcomes of the seminal Webster and Matuzelem cases (Juan de Dios represented the victorious appellants in both cases), or are their specific elements to the breach of player contract in each case which make it difficult to generalise a trend in similar cases going forward?; (2) What can be expected from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in future cases of this nature going forward?; (3) Is it necessary to re-modify Article 17 of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfers of Players in order to clarify the landscape around the player termination of contract issue going forward? Juan will conclude by giving an assessment of how he sees the future development of case law in the application of Article 17 of the FIFA Regulations.

Wednesday 21st October 2009

Ian Smith, Legal Director, Professional Cricketers’ Association

Cricket is one of the world’s most popular team sports. It is also a sport which, in terms of its organisation and governance, over the last ten years has undergone some of the most radical developments of any professional sport globally, notably with the establishment of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and thus offers lessons for administrators and managers across the sport business spectrum. In this presentation Ian Smith presents a broad historical overview of the development of the “industry” of cricket over the last decade, from the particular viewpoint of the Professional Cricketers Association (PCA). He concludes his analysis with some suggestions for re

“The English Premier League: A Global Brand or `Peoples’ Clubs?’”

Wednesday 10th June 2009 – 6.00pm

David Conn, Writer and Guardian Newspaper Columnist

Since its foundation in 1992 the Premier League has grown to become the world’s richest and most successful elite club football competition. Fans have flocked to stadia, television broadcasting rights have been sold for fortunes here and around the world, and the clubs have become coveted “trophy” assets for a string of international millionaires. However, for many the league embodies much that is wrong in modern sport; over-commercialisation, a corrosive financial divide with the rest of football, and huge personal fortunes being made by director-shareholders and agents, as well as players and managers. In this presentation David Conn assesses the booming popularity and glittering success of the English Premiership and assesses its challenges and its impact on the rest of football and the traditional roots of the game.

Martin Atkinson, Premier League Referee

In 2008 the Premier League launched the ‘Get on with the Game’ initiative in which Premier League Chairmen, managers and players all signed up to charters that outline acceptable standards of behaviour. The relationship between players and the referee is an important aspect of this initiative. In this semi-nar Martin Atkinson, a Premier League and FIFA listed referee, will discuss a range of issues.

“A Trans-Atlantic Conversation: What Americans can Learn from European Sport, and Some Outsider Observations About European ‘Football’"

Tuesday 31st March 2009 – 6.00pm

Stephen F. Ross, The Pennsylvania State University

In a recent book (Fans of the World, Unite! Stanford University Press), Stephen Ross and Stefan Szymanski argue that American sports fans are victims of monopolistic practices by sports leagues, which would be significantly ameliorated by the introduction of the European system of promotion & relegation. In addition, they identify significant inefficiencies that work contrary to the interests of fans and the sport as a whole when leagues are controlled by the participating clubs. They argue European football is characterized by the latter problem as well. But that the unique structure of the Indian Premier (Cricket) League provides a third model that addresses many of the structural issues in both American and European sports.

This presentation will review those cases in order to provide an insight as to the merits of the judgements.

Wednesday 11th February 2009 – 6.00pm

Michael Forde, Performance Director, Chelsea FC

It is widely acknowledged that Bolton Wanderers football club was one of the most effectively managed football clubs in the Premier League over the last ten years, driven by a commitment to the development of best practice in the wider business management of the club as a source of competitive advantage which saw a revolution in the club’s application of sports medicine, scouting and player retention strategies, performance analysis and administrative support.
“UEFA and the European Union, a game of two halves”

Dr Borja García, Lecturer in Sport Management and Policy, Loughborough University

European football’s governing body (UEFA) has enjoyed a difficult relationship with the institutions of the European Union (EU) and, especially, with the application of EU law to its own decisions and activities. In this presentation Dr Borja García will outline of the evolution in the relationships between UEFA and the institutions of the European Union from mistrust in the aftermath of the Bosman ruling to an environment of co-operation and relative positive feeling on both sides.

“The Model of Governance at FC Barcelona in 2008: Balancing Member Democracy, Commercial Strategy, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sporting Performance.”

Wednesday 28th January 2009 – 6.00pm

Sean Hamil, Geoff Walters & Lee Watson (Birkbeck College, University of London)

A popular justification for takeovers of English football clubs by millionaire private owners is that in order to be successful at the highest level a club needs to be able to attract major private investment to compete in the international football player labour market. However, ironically, FC Barcelona, one of Europe’s most successful clubs, is a not-for--profit sporting club owned by over 150,000 members, or socios. This presentation, drawing on a soon-to-be published book chapter by the presenters, critically considers the reasons why the untypical ownership and governance structure of FC Barcelona does not appear to hamper its ability to compete in financial and sporting terms. It also addresses the charge by critics that the mutual form of ownership is inherently unstable at a major football club due to the alleged potential for political machinations provided by the democratic process for electing club presidents, making reference to the recent vote-rigging scandal at Real Madrid.

Wednesday 21st January 2009 – 6.00pm

Dr Geoff Pearson, University of Liverpool

In this presentation, drawing on material from his book Football Hooliganism: Policing and the War on the English Disease (co-authored with Dr Clifford Stott), Dr Geoff Pearson challenges the traditional view that football crowd disorder abroad is caused simply by travelling hooligans ‘looking for trouble’, argues that many legislative and policing responses have had little impact in reducing the scale of ‘hooliganism’(casting a particularly critical eye on the validity and effectiveness of ‘Football Banning Orders’) and concludes by making some recommendations as to how disorder involving English fans abroad can be reduced without damaging the rights and legitimate expectations of law-abiding football supporters.
