Tomorrow morning we fly to New Orleans. It's our sixth trip down there since Katrina, and it's in keeping with our vow to stay on the story that we watched unfold. An article in one of our industry trade journals this morning served, I believe, as a well-intended attempt to hold our feet to the fire on coverage of the other issues that Katrina raised. Point taken, as our coverage in the coming days and weeks will reflect (including, but not limited to a series of reports on poverty that have been commissioned but take time to produce). Our Executive Producer John Reiss will be part of our travel team on this trip, as among other things John wants to thank the folks in our New Orleans bureau for the extraordinary work (and the volume of work) they've been doing, under less than the best circumstances. Frieda Morris, our Bureau Chief, is from Atlanta... and has selflessly put her life on hold to take charge of our day-to-day operation down there. An enormous amount of planning has gone into this week's trip to New Orleans, and if these upcoming Nightly News broadcasts go as we hope, I think they will make for a revealing glimpse of the city, post-Katrina.

THE BUG-GEIST
Here in New York, a new obsession was launched by a page one story in the Sunday New York Times. Suddenly, everyone is vigilant... on the lookout for bedbugs. It positively horrified Times readers, and it was among the topics of conversation at our morning editorial meeting today. I couldn't help but think: it's a good thing those of us in this business don't stay in a lot of strange hotels in strange places for a living!

And now, at long last, to today's news:

You may remember his father, Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark. Ramsey Clark has been involved in Democratic/liberal politics and law all his life (for example: when I first started collecting and listening to the audio tapes of President Lyndon Johnson's recorded telephone conversations, I was surprised by the familiarity the two men used in talking to one another). He has been in and out of the limelight for decades. But he's never done anything quite as baffling as this: he's arrived in Baghdad to be a part of Saddam Hussein's defense team. Richard Engel will have our report from court tonight.

Also, as Senior Producer Ed Deitch posted earlier, we'll have a tale of two members of Congress and their constituents... and how they reflect both sides in the current war debate. We'll look at the holiday retail season thus far: was "Black Friday" really black? Is this really "Cyber Monday" or are we all victims of the easy categories and simple labels that the media love to repeat? And if you've watched NBC for any length of time over this past holiday weekend, you've seen yours truly promoting a story about the dangers of opening those in-store credit card accounts. That will finally air tonight, relieving a nation of its collective suspense. And we'll have a fitting story from New Orleans to close out the broadcast on the eve of our trip there.

HITTING THE BOOKS
What a great weekend it was for fans of Book TV on C-Span. From Neil Armstrong's biographer James Hansen, to the author of One Bullet Away, former Marine Capt. Nathaniel C. Fick, an Iraq war veteran, to BOTH appearances by the wonderful David McCollough. For those of us who must constantly feed our book addictions, it is great to have a cable channel devoted to the discussion of great books.

GETTING TO THE BOTTOM OF THE STORY
Finally, the story identified by Nightly News writer Chris Colvin as the story of the day. In microcosm, it may say awful things about what we're becoming. If you've flown on those small "regional jets" (a great euphemism for "mailing tube") that the airlines have become so fond of, then you've seen this dynamic of human growth in sometimes-painful fashion.

Hi Brian,

Congrats on your first year as Nightly News Anchor. You're doing a terrific job!
I have been a Republican for the last 30+ years, but have always supported our Presidents, regardless of party.
As a military retiree, I fully support our men and women in uniform and do not take lightly comments from our appointed officials that can be used by our common enemies as a means to their ends. I do believe there remains a large majority of fellow citizens that feel likewise. If we learned nothing else from Vietnam, we should remember that the anti-was movement and celebrity activities at that time played well for the North Vietnamese in their final victory!
I truly feel that our country is in a quagmire neither side (Democrat or Republican) is providing the kind of leadership to lead us forward! Our current two party system needs a major overhaul! If a well qualified and competent Independant candidate were to come forth in 2008, I do believe he/she would be given great support if their platform was sound and provided the leadership we need for the future. We need concrete plans for moving this country forward--not mere promises, that in most likely hood disappear after Inaguration!!

Best Regards,

Tom W.

Thank you Brian for keeping our story alive. It is by now pretty well evident that most of the Country and the Federal Government could care less about what we are going through down here. Everything is a fight and one needs every ounce of strenght to remain positive. Your continued coverage is proof that there are few people that keep their promises. You, in contrast to the Federal Government, certainly have.

Congratulations on your first year. Hope to continue to watch you for many more!!!

We here in The New Orleans area are afraid the rest of the country are going to forget us.Every night I look forward to the stories you bring the world that we are still under piles of rubbish waiting for help that does not seem to come.At least when we see the news each night we know that somewhere, someone is watching and will know that we are slowly dying here of neglect. You are to be commended for your continued commitment to the story and for keeping the rest of the world aware of what is going on in the city "that care forgot" along with the ongoing stories of its citizens and its neighbors.
All of our relatives are coping, but it is an awfully different world down there and their new "normal" is something that no one ever dreamed of.
Thanks for falling in love with our hometown- something impossible NOT to do-even in decay. The spirit of the people of New Orleans is strong and stubborn, and with your help and that of your NBC colleagues, let the Renaissance begin!

Sincerely,
Charlene and Roy Taormina

Brian, seldom have I had as much confidence and trust in a newsman as I have in you and the NBC news team that supports you. As the front man for the team you are real, genuine and fair. You bring the news to life for my wife, Debbie, and I. It is such a pleasure to spend 30 mintues a night getting the straight scope. We began watching you on MSNBC -- you all are a major part of our viewing lives. The segment on Making a Difference is outstanding. Please keep the good work coming as y'll approach your first anniversary. Congratulations!

Mr. Williams, I wanted to congratulate you on your first year in the big seat. You have done a wonderful job filling Mr. Brokaw's shoes. As a soldier in the U.S. Army, and a fellow Elmira, N.Y. native, I wanted to thank you for your unbiased reporting of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. I've turned to NBC news as long as I can remember, and I will continue to do do so in the future. Again, keep up the good work, and best wishes to you.

You have had a great first year. You had some big shoes to fill but also had a great mentor. I especially admire your nonbiased method of news reporting. Also, you and Carl Quintanilla have done a great job reporting on the sad affairs in New Orleans. I went to college there so I have an emotional tie to there. I would love to know where to send little Charles Evans a donation. Please keep on reporting updates on him. Best wishes.

Congrats on your first year and we hope you are there for many more, our first choice!

Occasionally on the local news, there will be a story about an Iraq war veteran who states he/she would go back in a minute if asked. They go on to state all the good things that have happened but we do not hear or see those things. What progress and/or accomplishments have occurred since the downfall of the dictatorship? I would love to see that along with the suicide bombings, etc.

Keep up the good work, you do make a difference to us.

Mr. Williams:

I applaud your forthcoming trip back to New Orleans. I am glad you're continuing to follow up on the Katrina victims and aftermath. Please do not forget those from Mississippi and Alabama and Hurricane Rita. I say this, as here in Florida, there have been stories recently about people still in trailers from last year's hurricanes. And, in reading today's USA TODAY, apparently, there is an extreme shortage of affordable housing for many of our citizens. I hope you will consider doing a story on housing in the future. How can lower-class, working class people, afford the rents or purchase prices? What solutions are there?

Anyway, here's to a productive and safe trip.
