Eric Seale knew he would be busy this month. He just didn’t know how busy.

Last spring, Seale signed on to direct Studio Players’ production of “True West,” now playing through Feb. 7.

He had submitted the Sam Shepard script to Studio for four years, so getting the show up would fulfill a long-held ambition. But back then, he couldn’t have anticipated having another theater company under his wing.

Then the rest of 2009 happened.

After a financial meltdown and several director departures, Seale emerged as the last person on the payroll at Actors Guild of Lexington. So, as he guides a challenging script to the stage at one theater, he’s working to resurrect another.

And bringing Actors Guild back to life meant having to direct a show, “The SantaLand Diaries,” last month.
“I wasn’t 100 percent sure I could do it,” said Seale, who recently was named AGL’s acting artistic director.

“But I had pitched it (“True West”) for so long, I didn’t want them to hand it to someone else, so I said, ‘I’ll do it, I’ll do it.’”

Part of making it work, he said, was casting “True West” far in advance, so he would have time to let that show develop while he directed “SantaLand Diaries,” which was staged in a former restaurant space.

These days, he’s working during the day at Actors Guild’s offices on Manchester Street, then getting to Studio Players’ Carriage House Theatre in the late afternoon to get “True West” ready.

“It’s been challenging, but it’s also been good,” Seale says. “It’s a lot of work. It’s not overwhelming. … But I haven’t felt this challenged in a long time.”

So, NBC, here’s what you bought: Since all this “Tonight Show” hoo-ha started, Conan O’Brien’s ratings on the flagship late-night show have soared, while “The Jay Leno Show” has been, eh, OK. In fact, the last few nights, Conan at 11:35 was doubling Jay’s audience at 10.

Granted, there are famous qualifiers, like Conan’s show ended last night, so it was the final Conan fix for at least seven months while Jay will be coming back. And Jay does have prime-time competition at 10.

Here’s an evener plane: Conan has just been a whole lot funnier in his shows since it became obvious the nimrods at NBC were going to choose Jay over Conan on “The Tonight Show. The most noteworthy thing that has happened on “The Jay Leno Show” the last couple of weeks was that Jimmy Kimmel, ABC’s late-night guy, came on and humiliated the host. Night-to-night, Leno has just seemed grumpy.

Watching Conan’s final nights, with jokes like buying Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and putting him in a mink Snuggie on NBC’s dime, it’s become sort of amazing that he’s the guy NBC is paying to leave while Leno is the one they felt they couldn’t let go. That’s management at NBC for you.

It could very well happen that Leno retakes The “Tonight Show” in March and by the time O’Brien is back on the air in September, assuming that is what happens, Leno is back to being the ratings champ late night. He was the undisputed champ in the ratings when he left “Tonight,” so right now most arguments that he won’t retake the throne are purely emotional.

But no one can say O’Brien didn’t go out like a champ.

"Show Off" is one of the showstoppers from "The Drowsy Chaperone."

The Man in Chair indirectly describes one of “The Drowsy Chaperone’s” struggles before the first note of music is played.

He reflects back on a time — a time which, judging by his appearance, he never actually lived through — when audiences would pile into theaters anxious to see the latest thing the Gershwins, Cole Porter or other theater icons had come up with. They were rapt in anticipation, not knowing what new tunes they might be humming by the time the curtain fell, happy to be transported somewhere else for a few hours.

Unfortunately, “The Drowsy Chaperone” was produced in a different era, when audiences need to pretty much know what they are getting into before they’ll buy a ticket. Yes, tickets are a lot more expensive these days, and “Chaperone” is not a revival and does not have a precedent like a movie or pop star’s collection of hits.

But passing up a little gem like “The Drowsy Chaperone,” which opened Friday night at the Lexington Opera House, is somewhat tantamount to missing that new Gershwin or Porter creation.

Composer and lyricists Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison and writers Bob Martin and Don McKellar have come up with a musical for people who love musicals and that should have broad appeal to people who just want to have a good time.

The Man in Chair is a sweet, lonely guy that we discover has enough hangups to make Richard Lewis look like he has his stuff together. To assuage his sadness, he wants to play us the cast recording from one of his favorite Broadway shows, the fictional 1928 hit, “The Drowsy Chaperone.” It’s a silly little show about an impossibly beautiful and talented showgirl, Janet, getting ready to leave the stage to marry a vapid, handsome man, Robert, whose daddy has a lot of money. The producer of her show, “Feldzieg’s Follies,” is desperate to scuttle the marriage because Janet is essential to his show’s success. Also, one of his chief investors has hired two punny gangsters who are going to clobber him if she leaves.

Additional theater archetypes in the show include Kitty, the squeaky-voiced chorus girl who wants to be the star; Adolpho, the Latin lover; and the title character, the grand dame of theater who has a penchant for singing anthems that are completely irrelevant to the show, but everyone loves it because she is singing it.

The Man in Chair is well aware of the “Chaperone’s” shortcomings but forgives them for the joy the he gets from the show. And the musical within the musical — well, it basically makes it a musical — is a joyful little piece with some bona fide showstoppers like “Show Off,” where Janet sings that she’s ready to drop out of the spotlight all the while demonstrating her myriad talents including, but not limited to, singing, dancing, snake charming, gymnastics and escape artistry. You can find footage of Sutton Foster doing this number on YouTube, but Elizabeth Powlowski’s performance Friday night at the Lexington Opera House left nothing to be desired.

In fact the whole cast, which just put the finishing touches on this production a few weeks ago in Owensboro, seemed to relish the delirious and sometimes cheesy fun of the show.

Does it have a happy ending? Of course it does, Man in Chair reminds us: “It’s a musical, this isn’t real.”

But “Drowsy Chaperone” is somewhat surprisingly touching. And in reminding us how musicals help Man in Chair cope with his troubles, it doesn’t quite let us leave ours at the door.

Overall though, the show is a hoot, and probably the most tuneful and fun production to pass through the Opera House in a few years.

Watching “Drowsy Chaperone,” it is no wonder the show was nominated for 13 Tony Awards. It is a little baffling that it only managed to run for 674 performances on Broadway. It plays through Sunday in Lexington. You should catch it while you can.

RCA Records.

As absurd as it sounds, NPR turned me on to Ke$ha. Yes, I had heard “Tik Tok” plenty — if you frequently roll with a 12-year-old, it’s sort of hard to miss on the car radio. But honestly, the No. 1 single did not draw me into the rest of her just dropped album, “Animal.”

It was “Weekend Edition Saturday” host Scott Simon’s interview with the 22-year-old Nashville-raised musician last week that got me interested in hearing more. I popped in on the segment during the harmonizing opening bars of “Stephen,” not knowing who I was hearing. By the time I found out, I wanted to hear more of whoever it was. It turns out there is more to Ke$ha’s music than the derivative dance anthem that has been topping the charts. The greatest quality she does bring forward from “Tik Tok” into other tracks is this affable snarkiness we hear in the opening rap about brushing her teeth with a bottle of Jack (Note: More content like that is why I have not encouraged my 12-year-old to listen to the rest of the album). We get more of that vibe in songs like “Boots and Boys” and “D.I.N.O.S.A.U.R.,” infectious tunes that have a ton of personality, like David Lee Roth-era Van Halen. Overall, there is a greater diversity in style and sound here than most full-length pop efforts, particularly debuts.

Something I really appreciated in Ke$ha’s chat with Simon was her awareness of what “Animal” is: a fun party, pop record, not rocket science. Given those parameters, it’s a solid success. We’ll see if she has more.

In honor of the show, the Lexington Opera House sponsored a cocktail contest among six downtown establishments to come up with aDrowsy Chaperone cocktail. The requirement was that the drink employ champagne or brandy.

The winner, selected in an online vote, was Jill Day of deSha’s Grille and Bar in Victorian Square. The drink will be available at the Opera House during this weekend’s performances of The Drowsy Chaperone.

Here’s Day’s concoction:

The Drowsy Chaperone

1/2 ounce Blue Curaçao, more or less to taste and for color

3/4 ounce pineapple juice

Splash of Red Bull energy drink (for an ironic nod to the drowsy chaperone)

Champagne

Orange twist, for garnish

Pour curaçao, juice and Red Bull in champagne flute. Top with champagne. Garnish with orange twist.

Makes 1 drink.

Forgive us for self-indulgent acts like sleeping, but while we were looking at the insides of our eyelids Monday night, Ms. Ashley Judd was on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” talking about — what else — the Wildcats. In the clip above, Judd details some of her basketball watching rituals to a fascinated Fallon. She also talked about grad school life at Harvard, where she claims to eat a lot of pizza, and kicked Fallon and NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson’s posteriors in a bumper car race (a little coaching from Dario?). Click here for the full episode.

Folks who follow Laura Bell Bundy might have expected that the next time we’d hear from her, she’d be in another Broadway show. But the Lexington native’s next act is coming from Nashville.

For the past year and a half, Bundy has been working on her debut album for Universal Music Nashville, “Achin’ and Shakin’,” which is set to be released in the spring.

But country music fans are going to start getting a taste of Bundy’s country act this week.

Already, a teaser video is out for her first single, “Giddy On Up,” which you can see at LexGo.com or at Bundy’s Web site, . You can hear the song at the label’s site.

On Monday morning, the video will premiere on CMT (Insight Channel 56) about 10 a.m., according to Bundy’s publicist.

On Tuesday, the single and another song, “Cigarette,” will be available on iTunes.

The two songs represent both sides of the concept album, mostly written by Bundy. The “Achin’” part is “a collection of slow and sultry country songs,” according to a news release, and the “Shakin’” portion is “a group of sassy songs that are equal parts humor, confidence and attitude.”

“Giddy On Up,” as quickly evidenced by the earworm chorus, falls into the latter category.

A release date has not been announced for the full album.

Fans will know that this is not the first foray into country for Bundy, best known for originating the role of Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde — The Musical” on Broadway, which earned her a 2007 Tony Award nomination for best actress in a musical.

Before immersing herself in that show, she recorded “Longing for a Place Already Gone,” which she released independently. The rootsy country release got her some airplay on country radio and Americana stations, including Lexington’s WUKY-91.3 FM. Before that, she recorded an album with childhood friend Amber Rhodes, who also is pursuing a recording career in Nashville.

The new effort is targeting Bundy squarely at the mainstream country market.

Her mother, Lorna Bundy Jones, says Bundy will return to Broadway, where she also originated the role of Amber Von Tussel in “Hairspray” and played Glinda in “Wicked.”

But after the success of Legally Blonde, Jones said, it was important to her daughter to get to work on a country music career. So Bundy moved to Nashville from New York, where she continues to receive stage offers, her mother says.

At the moment, Jones says, Bundy is focused on the new album.

“The other day,” Jones says, “she said to me, ‘Mom, we worked our whole lives to get here, and now we’re finally doing it.’”

Maybe I’m just not checking the right pulses, but I don’t sense the excitement about “Avatar” for best picture it seems like I should be feeling.

This is the awards season Oscar has been saying it wanted for a dozen years: A year like 1998, when James Cameron’s “Titanic” was No. 1 by several hundred million at the box office and movie fans were excited to see it add some award-show cred to its huge profits. Again, we have a James Cameron pic, “Avatar,” his first since “Titanic.” And again, he picked up best director and best picture at Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards. But it rang a little hollow.

<img class="size-full wp-image-6416 " title="Golden Globe Awards - Show" src="http://copiousnotes.bloginky.com/files/2010/01/100117globes-cameron.jpg" alt="James Cameron, winner of best motion picture drama and best director for "Avatar," on stage during the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Photo by Paul Drinkwater | NBC.

Maybe it’s because, unlike “Titanic,” “Avatar” doesn’t have any on-screen talent in the awards race like 1998, when Kate Winslet was a nominee, and many thought Leonardo DiCaprio should have been. Maybe, being more of a sci-fi genre film, it’s not attracting awards-show-friendly audiences the way the more classic-Hollywood “Titanic” did. Maybe, at the Globes, it was because Cameron seemed more interested in talking about his bodily functions.

Maybe it’s just too early.

As we get closer to Oscar night, March 7, maybe the excitement will build — the nominations will pop up at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 2.

“Avatar” could have also suffered from being the big winner on a pretty ho-hum Golden Globes.

Ricky Gervais was the first actual emcee in recent memory, but the main thing we’ll remember about him is how a recurring joke of him pushing his own shows got really tired.

Goldie often gives us train wreck speeches courtesy of Moët & Chandon, but the closest we got tonight was Robert Downey Jr. accepting his trophy for best actor in a comedy or musical for “Sherlock Holmes” saying, “If you start playing violins, I’m going to tear this joint apart.”

That seemed to stem more from personal bravado — and probably some annoyance at an orchestra that seemed bent on playing people off before they could say, “Thank yo … ” — than getting a kick from champagne.

There were some other cute lines, like Paul McCartney, presenting the award for best animated feature saying he is now known as, “that guy from ‘Rock Band.’”

Animated feature seemed to portend a routine evening on the movie side, giving Pixar’s “Up” the trophy despite strong competition from “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” “The Princess and the Frog” and “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” — bad omen for “Fox” star George Clooney. Hollywood’s favorite Kentuckian also came up short in the race for best actor in a drama for critic’s darling “Up in the Air.” Four-time Oscar nominee Jeff Bridges won for “Crazy Heart” and is emerging as a sentimental favorite for the Academy Awards — I’d give it to him for “The Fisher King.”

In Oscar’s best actress category, it looks like Sandra Bullock for “The Blind Side,” who won the drama award, vs. Meryl Streep for “Julie and Julia,” who won the comedy/musical award. That Bullock would be facing off against Streep would have seemed as unimaginable a few years ago as an actual comedy winning the best comedy-musical award.

The last few years, the award and most of the nominations have gone to musicals or “serious” comedies such as “Lost in Translation” (2003) or “Sideways” (2004). Then, there was 2006, when it went to a drama, “Walk the Line,” that just happened to have music in it. But Sunday night, an unqualified comedy, “The Hangover,” won. It was immediately controversial on Twitter, with posters such as Entertainment Weekly’s Dave Karger incredulous.

Here at le blog, we say bravo Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and we don’t say that much. Comedy really gets the short shrift this time of year, but filmmakers deserve recognition for something that is simply laugh-out-loud funny without having to make a profound statement about the human condition or possess the cachet of a name like Woody Allen atop the marquee. Maybe “The Hangover’s” win will be a bellwether of more open mindedness by the HFPA.

Is it a sign “Hangover” will be a finalist for Best Picture when Oscar nominees are announced Groundhog Day? Who knows. Film fans need something to get excited about for Oscar night.
