Puff 'n' Stuff.

Dear reader, there's a huge amount of local action happening this fortnight - in fact, this is possibly the most Adelaide-centric issue of dB Magazine... ever! Puff can't remember when there's been so damn many CD launches in the one fortnight, so there's never been a better time than now to dip your toe into the warm and inviting waters of the local scene: a scene which, let's not be coy, dB Magazine has always been about the celebration of.

So, let's get the launch roundup into some
sort of order: first up, Everest are launching their latest
effort at Jive on Fri 13 Aug.

The Ben Farrell Band have just released their 'This Life' CD and are making a live appearance to mark it: catch them at Raglans on Sat 14 Aug, along with The Fortunate Sons.

Thomas C Barton also has launchery in his veins, which is why
he's launching his 'Altered Heights' CD and website (cunningly
known as www.thomascbarton.com.au) at the Jade Monkey on Fri
13 Aug, with musical support from The Sunroom and Triple J Net
50 star No Through Road.

Soursob Bob has decided to pool the best moments of his 'Living In The Long Grass' and 'You Don't Make Me Feel Special Anymore' CDs to make the best-of 'Beer For Breakfast' (with a re-recording of the title track), and he'll be launching it at the Wheatsheaf Hotel on Sat 21 Aug.

Shane Howard, that chap probably best known
for fronting Goanna, is coming to Adelaide in support of his
brand new 'Another Country' CD: catch him and his band at the
Governor Hindmarsh on Thurs 19 Aug.

Livid might have decided to take a year off, but not The Falls
Festival. In fact, they so enjoyed having two festivals running
concurrently (one at the traditional site in Lorne, Victoria,
and the other on the east coast of Tasmania) that they're doing
it all again from Thurs 30 Dec to Sat 1 Jan, with around fifty
bands, DJs and comedians - and if the first announcement is
any indication, it should be an eclectic mix. So far they've
revealed the lineup will include the John Butler Trio, Missy
Higgins, Rocket Science, The Panics and Adelaide's own Hilltop
Hoods. And that's just for starters - there's plenty more to
come. In the meantime, get all the ticketing, camping and lineup
details at www.fallsfestival.com right now.

Now, Puff scoffed at the first rumours that
the Pixies were reforming a year or so back, citing the acrimonious
circumstances surrounding the split as being too fraught to
ever overcome... and then it all rather oddly turned out to
be true. Hence, Puff's getting in on the ground floor with this
particular reformation rumour, although given that the post-split
aftermath involved a decade-long lawsuit and a huge amount of
public bitterness, Puff's not entirely convinced... but could
it be true that The Smiths are contemplating a reformation,
as certain sources would have it? Given drummer Mike Joyce's
successful claim for unpaid residuals and live performances
from Morrissey and Johnny Marr - and that Morrissey has been
bitching about being a victim of the legal system in every interview
since - Puff's putting this firmly in the believe-it-when-we-see-it
pile. Unless it turns out to be true, in which case you heard
it hear first, right kids?

It doesn't happen often, but all of the members of nation-spanning
rockers Diplomat are in the one city at the same time - and
it's ours! Hence, they're keen to get folks along to their show
at the Jade Monkey on Sat 14 Aug, to the extent that the first
30 people through the door will get a very special surprise:
a track off their forthcoming album. What's more, they also
get sets by Loemax and TommyGun.

Speaking of local-bands-spread-around-the-nation,
Captain Cleanoff are also reconvening in their former hometown
for one of their all-too-occasional shows: catch them at the
Enigma Bar on Fri 20 Aug for The War Room, alongside Omnium
Gatherum, Los Diablos and Melbourne's Shallow Grave.

Stuff from Puff: Another couple of additions to the recent spate of reformations: Camper Van Beethoven are set to release 'New Roman Times,' their first new album since 1989's 'Key Lime Pie,' De La Soul's new album is due before the end of the year and better-than-average Britpop also-rans Echobelly have just released a new album ('Gravity Falls') in the UK. It also looks like the The Black Crowes are reforming, with Chris Robinson and brother Rich apparently putting their differences aside. You know, in some ways Puff liked it better when we found new bands... The Beta Band have announced their split in the wake of a final tour in support of their collective post-divorce album 'Heroes To Zeroes.' No word yet on a reformation... Legal corner: former Meat Puppets bassist Cris Kirkwood has pleaded guilty to an assault on a post office security guard after beating him with his own baton in December. Kirkwood will spend 21 months in prison, pay $7000 to the victim in compensation and be subject to three years' supervision upon his release... Still in the courts, Lil' Kim has pleaded not guilty after being indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice. The charges stem from her alleged involvement in a shooting outside the offices of a New York radio station in 2001. A trial date has been set for February 2005... Meanwhile, rapper Big Hutch has begun his jail sentence for conspiracy to traffic 1,000 pounds of marijuana. Hutch still claims that he knew nothing of what was going on and that it was an unfortunate mix-up and his publicist is confident he'll be free within a year... And pity poor Justin Hawkins: not only has a tummy upset meant that The Darkness have been forced to pull out of the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan and cancel a few dates of their European tour - but to add insult to gastroenteritis, some enterprising thief stole all four wheels off of Hawkins black Jaguar XK8 parked outside his London apartment. There's a reward out for their return, so if any readers happen to notice unusually Jaguar-esque wheels about, let Puff know...

Former Pink Floyd singer/songwriter/bassist
Roger Waters is revisiting 'The Wall' once again, this time
as a Broadway musical. He's currently developing the piece with
co-producers Harvey Weinstein and former Sony head/Mariah Carey
paramour Tommy Mottola. MTV.com quotes Waters as quipping "Now
I can write in some laughs, notable by their absence in the
movie." And speaking of that movie, it's coming up shortly in
dB Magazine's Big Indoor Cinema at the Mercury (on Tues 28 Sept,
to be exact), preceded by The Who's mighty 'Quadrophenia' on
Tues 24 Aug. Puff just thought you'd like to know.

With the status of Hello Minnesota! somewhere between "inactive" and "possibly looking at a new lineup," sassy frontperson Leigh StarDust is doing it solo style at the Crown & Anchor on Sun 15 Aug.

Those who turned up to the Youth Group, Bit
By Bats and I [Love] Space gig at Fowlers Live on Sat 7 Aug
may have noticed that, er, there was no-one there. It turns
out that the 'Group's frontman Tony Martin had come down with
a particularly nasty illness and was unable to sing, so the
band decided to leave him tucked in at home. All three bands
promise to make up for it with a rescheduled visit sometime
in September.

Puff's pretty damn impressed with Adelaide audiences. In the last few months there's been a slew of sell-out gigs here in the city the promoters traditionally complain about: John Butler Trio, Pete Murray, Xavier Rudd, Black Eyed Peas, and now Muse have put up the "house full" signs for their Mon 6 Sept show. Puff's also been told that tickets for Spiderbait's Adelaide UniBar show on Sat 4 Sept (with Goodshirt and Ground Components) is looking like a sellout, early sales for Bonny "Prince" Billy at the Gov on Wed 22 Sept are strong, and tickets for The Living End at Thebbie on Sun 3 Oct are moving at an unexpectedly healthy clip as well - might want to get in early, if you want to go to any gigs in the next few months...

Raw Honey are coming back through Adelaide
for a show at the Gov on Sun 15 Aug with good buddies the Standard
Deviations. Both bands promise special guests, a roaring fire
and sweet, sweet sounds. Kick-off is at the family-friendly
hour of 2pm and the gig is smoke-free.

More stuff from Puff: Jude Law is rumoured to be in talks to
play Ian Curtis in a biopic about the late Joy Division frontman...
Har Mar Superstar is putting the finishing touches on 'The Handler,'
which has guest appearances from Pete Thomas (of The Attractions
and The Imposters) and two thirds of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Karen
O and Nick Zimmer... Perth's The Panics have been invited to
open for The Happy Mondays at their 'Get Loaded On Clapham Common'
outdoor show next month. They'll also be doing their own tour
during their stay in the mother country... Whilst Chimaera will
be in Adelaide on Fri 17 Sept (at Heaven with touring pals In
Flames) it'll be a slightly different lineup: drummer Richard
Evensand has quit (apparently due to "visa issues," which is
a refreshingly globetrotting alternative to the standard "creative
differences") and has been replaced by Kevin Talley, late of
Misery Index... Carlos Santana has been named as the Latin Recording
Academy's 2004 Person Of The Year. The ceremony will include
tributes from the likes of the Black Eyed Peas, Dave Matthews,
Rob Thomas and Ozomatli in a ceremony in LA on Mon 30 Aug...
And while we're talking ceremonies, the Liverpool Institute
of the Performing Arts presented The Bangles with honorary degrees
on Fri 6 Aug in recognition of a master class the band conducted
during their tour in March 2003. Yes, The Bangles. What's more,
the degrees (which make the four members "Companions" of the
LIPA) were presented by one of the school's founders, Paul McCartney...And
finally, with new single Cold Hard Bitch doing the business
at the moment, Jet have announced their Adelaide show to make
up for their non-appearance earlier this year: they'll be bringing
a whole lot of rock to Memorial Drive on Fri 22 Oct.

Ah, the sweet smell of science! Yes, it's
National Science Week until Sun 22 Aug (which makes it one of
those twenty-three day long weeks - science really is amazing!).
There's plenty of activities going on, including The Science

Star Wars corner: with the recent announcement that the final Star Wars film will be titled 'Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith' comes the less-than-delicious news that the September release of the original trilogy - known throughout the Star Wars community as "the films that don't suck" - on DVD has a few surprises that will have fans up in arms. First up, unsurprisingly, they're not the original versions of the films but the Special Editions from the mid-90s, and George Lucas has made a few, ahem, "special additions" in the interim in order to make the original films more consistent with Episodes I-III. Nothing's been officially confirmed as yet, but the rumours include Temura Morrison (Jango Fett) re-recording all of the stormtrooper and Boba Fett dialogue (since they're his clones, you see), Ian McDiarmid reshooting The Emperor's scenes from 'The Empire Strikes Back' (it's the only film where he didn't play the role, to be fair) and Hayden Christensen in heavy makeup reshooting scenes as the aged Anakin Skywalker for 'Return Of The Jedi' (replacing the late Sebastian Shaw). Oh, and apparently Jar Jar Binks turns up at some point too. Lunacy, Puff calls it.
