"Hiking Adventures in Northern New Mexico"
        by
        Joan and Gary Salzman

Joan and Gary will describe several of the hikes from their recent book, "Hiking Adventures in Northern New Mexico", including a hike to the Nogales Cliff House, which was built by the little known people of the Gallina Culture in the Llaves Valley between 1050 and 1250 AD. The site is in the Santa Fe National Forest.

The hikes take you to hidden archaeological sites, collections of petroglyphs, lava tube caves, ancient eagle traps, ghost towns, lumber camps from the 1930s, natural arches, mica mines, and along the roadbed of the old Chili Line Railroad. The book includes topographic maps and Global Positioning System (GPS) waypoints and tracks that make it easy to find the trailheads and to stay on the trails. The waypoints for each hike are on a CD in the back of the book in several computer readable formats. There are hikes in the Carson and Santa Fe National Forests as well as hikes on public land up and down the Rio Grande Valley. These latter hikes are particularly nice during the winter and early spring when mountain hiking may be difficult. Each chapter has scenic photos, some of which are included on the CD. There are a few historical photos. These hikes are drawn from more than 30 years of hiking experiences in Northern New Mexico.

Joan and Gary Salzman have been avid hikers since they were in high school in the San Francisco Bay Area. They met on a hike in Yosemite National Park in 1959, and they have been hiking together ever since. The authors taught mathematics and physics as Peace Corps Volunteers at a high school in Ghana, West Africa. Joan has an MS in mathematics and Gary has a Ph.D. in physics. He recently retired from LANL. The authors have lived in Los Alamos for more than 30 years, and they continue to find interesting new places to explore on their various hiking adventures.
See lamountaineers.org<about:blank> for photo , and all the club information.

Upcoming Trips:

There are many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors with many new trips offered for various levels of skill and ability! So give yourself and your family a break to get out and enjoy!

September 23, 2006, Valle Caldera: Cerros del Abrigo Hike<>

Leader: Peter McLachlan, peterm at lanl.gov<mailto:peterm at lanl.gov> <mailto:jstudebaker at gmail.com>

(B/E) Come discover a new national and personal treasure - - the Valles Caldera National Preserve. A guide will meet us at great vistas along the way to point out the Preserve's amazing geologic legacy and the plants, animals and human imprints that arose from that legacy. Interpretive stops will be interspersed with plenty of quiet time for reflection and enjoyment of the trail. The trail is 7 miles in length, with a moderately-steep 700' elevation gain up to about 9,500 feet. We will be car pooling from Peter McLachlan's house that Saturday morning. Reservations can be made for $15 at this site: http://www.vallescaldera.gov/comevisit/hike/hike_viewall.aspx <http://www.vallescaldera.gov/comevisit/hike/hike_viewall.aspx>

September 29-October 1, Latir Wilderness Backpack<>

Leader: Jan Studebaker, jstudebaker at gmail.com <mailto:jstudebaker at gmail.com>

(B/M) Join Jan Studebaker on a backpack into the Latir Wilderness just north of Taos. We plan to settle in to the Heart Lake area for two nights (Friday and Saturday). Heart Lake is 5 miles from the trailhead and is backed by sweeping mesas that reach 12,600 feet. It is a relatively easy climb to the lake; our Saturday day hike will make a grand loop past the lake onto the alpine ridges of Latir Mesa, where sweeping views reach from the Latir Lakes below to the summits of distant Colorado. The trail fades in the high meadows, and some route finding will be necessary over Latir Mesa and on the Bull Creek Trail. The loop trip traverses more than 4 miles of terrain above timberline. We expect to put in over 20 miles of total hiking, and over 4000' vertical in three days (10 miles with backpacks). The rainy season should be over, but the nights may be chilly. We will return home Sunday.

September 30, 2006, Meltdown Outdoor Climbing Competition<>

(B-A/M-S) The Family YMCA<http://lamountaineers.org/zGYM.html> and the Los Alamos Mountaineers are proud to host the 16th annual Meltdown outdoor climbing competition on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the Overlook Park<http://lamountaineers.org/zLOCATE.html#The Overlook> in White Rock. Climbing will begin at 1:00pm. Local and non-local divisions are offered for men and women in the following categories: Youth (12 and under), Junior (13-17), Recreational Senior (18+), and Advanced Senior (18+).

Registration is $20 through September 21 (must be post marked by September 17); late registration is $25. Registration includes a T-shirt and dinner, and will be available at the YMCA starting September 6. For more information call the YMCA at 505-662-3100.

October 1-15, 2006, Camino de Santiago in Spain
Leader: Dick Opsahl, opsahl at losalamos.com<mailto:opsahl at losalamos.com>

(B/M) Join Dick and Judy Opsahl to hike a portion of the Camino de Santiago
from East to West in Northern Spain. We will hike 10 - 12 miles each day
and stay in the pilgrim refuges along the route. We fly into Madrid on 1
October and will take the train to our starting point along the Camino. We
will leave the group on 15 October when we will start our 2 week assignment
as refuge hosts. Take a look at the Camino at
http://www.fnarr.net/camino.Friday<http://www.fnarr.net/camino.Friday>

October 6-15, 2006, Escalante/Horse Canyon Adventure
Leader: Bill Priedhorsky, bill at priedhorsky.net<mailto:bill at priedhorsky.net>

(B-I/M) Once again, Bill will lead a fall llama adventure in the Escalante
country, exploring a piece of the Escalante river that the club has never
seen. This is the area near the confluence of Horse Canyon and the river,
which seems to be a land of slickrock and a deep, cliff-walled canyon gorge.
This region fills the gap between Boulder Creek and Silver Falls, both of
which we have visited. Some photos of the area can be found at:

October 14, 2006 (Saturday), Mountain Bike Ride thru Guadalupe Canyon
Leader: David Brown, 505-662-2185, and Jean Dewart, 505-662-9592

(B/M-S) David Brown and Jean Dewart will lead a non-technical mountain bike
(a hybrid bike will also work) ride up Guadalupe Canyon (starting 7 miles
south of Jemez Springs) on routes 485 and 375. We will then ride down
routes 126 and 4 to complete the loop. Guadalupe canyon is a scenic canyon
with cascades, beautiful cliffs, alpine tunnels and lovely meadows. The
route in the canyon follows an old railroad bed (mostly 2-3 % grade) on 6
miles of blacktop followed by 17 miles of dirt road for a total gain of 2900
ft. Our descent is on a blacktop road going thru La Cueva and Jemez
springs. In Jemez Springs we can stop for a well earned meal at the
Laughing Lizard restaurant ( known for their decadent deserts). The total
mileage is 43 miles.

October 28-29, 2006, Third Annual City of Rocks (New Mexico) Bouldering Festival <>

S.I.C.C. Contact: Rob Allen, ttigerone at hotmail.com<mailto:ttigerone at hotmail.com>

(B-A/M-S) Shoulder the pads and load the telescope in the car for a road trip back in time, some thirty four million years, to an area conceived from a volcanic eruption that was one thousand times larger than Mt. St. Helen's. The combination of thousands of bouldering problems, modern facilities, and tranquility rarely found, explains why this little park was a favorite among such Hueco veterans as Bob Murray and John Sherman. Join us for a weekend of sore fingers tips, tall tales, slack lining, and star gazing, in a way that can only be done at the City of Rocks Bouldering Festival; presented by Sonora International Climbers Coalition.

Picnic tables are situated amongst the rocks, as are wonderful car camping areas. Photos of the park can be seen here<http://jemez.org/City_of_Rocks/index.htm>.

The City of Rocks State park is located between Tucson and El Paso, and can be reached by taking I-10 to Deming, New Mexico. Upon reaching Deming, travel north on Highway 180 for twenty four miles (towards Silver City) until reaching NM 61. Turn right on NM 61 and travel for four miles, this will bring you to the entrance of the park. The park closes the gate at 9:00 pm, but arrangements might be made by calling the park staff in advance at 505-536-2800. Silver City is located a short drive away, and makes for a great place to motel. Note: this is not an LAM sponsored activity.

November 18-26, 2006, Lake Powell Houseboating<>
Leader: Bill Priedhorsky, bill at priedhorsky.net<about:blank>

(B-I/M) Inspired by Kathleen Gruetzmacher's highly successful 2004 trip, Bill Priedhorsky is organizing a houseboat trip over Thanksgiving week. The objective is exploring side canyons, buttes, and slickrock during one of the quietest times of year. The general plan is to rent a boat from Bullfrog (across the lake from Hall's Crossing), and head downlake, trying to cover as much interesting country as possible while minimizing travel time and gasoline burned. Thanksgiving dinner will be on tables at the shore of the lake.

As Kathleen announced for her fall '04 adventure: "The hiking is typical canyon hiking, both in the bottom of canyons and up on the slick rock, with great views of the surrounding country and the lake. The lake is calm, beautiful and peaceful at this time of year, with little competition for anchoring spots for the night. Lying on the top of the boat looking at the stars is an unforgettable experience. Along the way, we will boat into narrow canyons, see Indian ruins, and the remains of ranching and mining activities. The boat has beds and a bit of storage space for each person, fully equipped kitchens, a grill, coolers, outdoor decks and chairs, and a small shower. The current water level is 3606 feet, which is 94 feet below full pool, and perhaps 35 feet higher than our fall 04 trip.

I will be looking for two competent boat handlers for each boat (Bill is not the captain, just the organizer! ).

We will leave Los Alamos on Saturday the 18th of November, which is the Saturday before Thanksgiving, stay on shore that night (probably Bullfrog Lodge) and head out onto the lake on Sunday, returning to the marina on Sunday the 26th and driving home to Los Alamos that day.

I have reserved 1 houseboat and tagalong motorboat, which will cost $460 per person plus gas and food for 10 passengers, and the night of pre- launch lodging. If the trip goes significantly above 10, we can rent a 2nd boat. We might consider the economy of sharing one motor boat between the two houseboats. Once we assemble our party, we will divide up food responsibilities.

If interested, please contact Bill at bill at priedhorsky.net<about:blank>, and send a $150 deposit per person to him at 380 Rim Road, Los Alamos 87544. The first boat is more or less full, so please let him know ASAP so a 2nd boat can be secured.
