A beautiful collection of music
One of the many reasons the film version of Robert Waller's pallid and common novel surpassed expectations and became one of the few films to improve its original source is due in no small part to director Clint Eastwood's impeccable taste and selection of the soundtrack. Choosing vocal work from the elegant Dinah Washington and the cool, smokey eroticism of Johnny Hartman as well as composing the vivid and drifting "Doe Eyes", Eastwood created a film that breathed autumnal, ephemeral romance.
This is a soundtrack album that stands on its own as excellent listening. Besides the simply gorgeous aforementioned "Doe Eyes" (Eastwood has developed into quite a deft and sensitive composer), higlights include Hartman's brilliant rendering of "For All We Know", "Easy Living" and "It Was Almost Like A Song" along with Washington's "I'll Close My Eyes".
I used selections from this as part of a soundtrack for a stage version William Inge's PICNIC and the drifting, haunting, and luscious sounds contained here produced an effective atmosphere of longing and loneliness.
A beautiful collection of music that made a pretty good film work. A certain must own for lovers of jazz.

Love Letters ......
"The Bridges of Madison County" Soundtrack CD.....
It is not neccessary to have seen the film to appreciate what this music is about. It opens with the wonderfully romantic orchestral love theme "Doe Eyes". Composed by Clint Eastwood(yet another great talent of his revealed), and conducted by Lennie Niehaus, the music fills the room with the soothing sounds, and already you are under the spell!
Then ,like love letters put to music,Dinah Washington's feminine and soulful tones and Johnny Hartman's deep but docile voice exchange stories of love and romance through song. Dinah sings "I'll Close My Eyes", she says"through those moments, were apart, I'll close my eyes and see you with my heart".Johnny returns with "Easy Living" and expresses that"people say you rule me with one wave of your hand...Darling it's grand.."These are followed by "Blue Gardenia"(Washington), "I see Your Face Before Me"(Hartman) and "Soft Winds"(Washington), all expressing the fleeting affair and the lasting love. You will also be treated to some wonderful instrumental solos interwoven in the songs.
A light and lively rendition of "Baby, I'm Yours"(Barbara Lewis) gives the sense of the time era, followed by more wonderful love songs, including artists Irene Kral with the Junior Mance Trio. There are twelve tracks in all(see buying info for complete lists), and closes with the mesmerizing "Doe Eyes" once more.
The CD is a great quality and sounds terrific on the stereo.
This album is for anyone who has ever loved or has ever been loved!....Close YOUR eyes and enjoy...Laurie

Doe Eyes
When I saw the movie and listened to the theme song I bought it right away. Doe Eyes is the most beautiful, heart-wrenching song I have ever heard. I rarely cry and hearing this song can make me cry (it touches the soul). I feel so good after listening to the song and it can have a moving effect. I agree with the other woman that Clint Eastwood should have been more noticed as the composer of the song. What a wonderful start for him. It is a masterpiece.

From the opening note this CD takes you to heaven and beyond. Johnny Hartman is amazing along with Irene Kral to Dinah Washington, who could ask for more? I suggest this CD to anyone who wants to escape for 45 minutes and just listen to good pure music, perfect for a romantic evening or just sitting out on the deck and enjoying! This is also my 6month old daughters bedtime CD. It's that wonderful, it puts her right to sleep.

<b Amazon.com

This 1991 companion to German director Wim Wenders's film sets a highwater mark for the intelligent use of cutting-edge popular (and we're using thatterm in its broadest sense) music on film, deservedly cracking onto criticallists for the best releases of that year, period. The contemplative thriller'ssetting at the end of the millenium is answered by a remarkable repertory ofartists including Talking Heads, Neneh Cherry, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, R.E.M.,Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Patti Smith, Jane Siberry with k.d. lang, T-BoneBurnett, Daniel Lanois and U2, a de facto dream team.Nearly all theseperformances were unheard at the time of release, and beyond the evident marqueelustre there's an underlying cohesion to the sense of yearning that prevails. Both Cave and U2 build powerful songs around the title theme, Elvis offers abrilliant Ray Davies cover, and the Siberry/lang classic, "Calling AllAngels," summarizes the spiritual underpinnings of this thoroughly modern, ultimately timeless classic in film music. --Sam Sutherland
... Read more
Reviews (23)

BEST EVER SOUNDTRACK
A case where the soundtrack is much better than the movie! This album has been a favorite for years, as it contains great songs by some well-known artists and some (to me)unknowns. Very cohesive in mood and theme, it offers some really outstanding tracks like The Adversary (Crime & The City Solution), Thank You For The Days (Elvis Costello), I'll Love You Till The End Of The World (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds), Until The End Of The World (U2), Sleeping In The Devil's Bed (Daniel Lanois), and the shimmering jewel that is Calling All Angels, by Jane Siberry and k.d. lang. These tracks alone earn the album 5 stars, while the rest isn't bad either.

One of the best soundtracks ever
It definitely has to be among the top 5 soundtracks of all times. This outstanding work to go along with the road movie of all times, "Until The End Of The World," by wunder director, Wim Wenders, went beyond where most soundtracks had gone before it came out (1991) and set the pace for great soundtracks to come later on (The Insider, Traffic and others).
Simply put the soundtrack gathered the cream of the music scene: opening and closing tracks in charge of Graeme Revell/David Darling; mood swings in charge of Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, REM, Nick Cave, Patti Smith, Daniel Lanois and U2, among others; and one of the most beautiful songs of all times, "Calling All Angels" by Canadian Jane Siberry, topping it all.
The one big missing song from this album is the very special version of "Blood Of Eden" that Peter Gabriel rearranged for this movie, in one of its most beautiful moments: when Solveig Dommartin and William Hurt's plane peacefully lands after all electronic devices fail to operate due to a nuclear explosion. Otherwise, it's one of those perfect soundtracks.

I bought this cd the day after I went to see the movie and I remember listening to it over and over again driving my poor roommate nuts. Well it's been well over a dozen years and last night I dug it out and listened to the entire album. All I can say is Wow! I cannot believe the cd was still able to make me laugh and cry during all the same songs. 'Days' is definitely the BEST Elvis Costello song ever, but every song here is pure joy.
Realistically there are are very few perfect cds that could be considered as a DID, (desert island disc), this however, is one of mine.

BEST SOUNDTRACK EVER
In my opinion, and I don't overestimate it I hope - the greatest soundtrack of all times.
If you're hesitant about buying it, here are a few sales promoters:
-I didn't like the movie. Although the idea was amazing, there were a few problems there (lead actress gave dreadful performance, movie too long, people in it too serious, on the edge from becoming ridiculous, etc.). The soundtrack, however - impeccable.
-If you're not into soundtracks - it's not full of vocal-less tunes, but more of a compilation of songs, with a few short intervals in between.
-The cast of the soundtrack is impressive, but all artists gave songs of theirs that were never singles, a few can't be found anywhere else.
-Despite the variety of artists and multitude of tracks (19), the album is amazingly harmonious, and maintains a certain mood. It's therefore a great atmosphere CD, as well as a great driving CD. I wouldn't even change the order of the songs, that's how well everything here was thought of.
Many REM fans will agree that this song here is one of their finest ever, and it doesn't appear anywhere else. The dub remix to Neneh Cherry's 'Move With Me' is amazing, and I'm not a fan of hers. 'Days' sung by Elvis Costello, as well as Nick Cave's inning, are both painfully beautiful. 'The Adversary' is probably the best track. The only disappointing track is the one by Depeche Mode - could have chosen much better from their repertoire.
Buy it now, and you won't regret.

GREAT SONGS...
Truly they are. But the quality of the recording is very bad. Maybe there wasn't a good job remastering the original tapes or whatever, but if you have a stereo with four or more speakers, you have to turn off them and leave only two to listen without distortion... something you pay in loudness, of course. But again, as many reviewers has said, this is the kind of stuff you might prefer to listen quietly and calmly. But anyway, no matter how soft you put the volume, three or more speakers still destroy the experience. Too bad, I like this OMS very much and I have to listen to it only in a portable CD player.

A great album with some terrific songs. A good mix of styles and artists. Bonnie Raitt's "Feels Like Home" is one of the prettiest songs ever. And Kenny Wayne Shepherd does a fantastic cover of the Rolling Stones "The Spider and the Fly" with the help of great blues artist James Cotton. Then there's the country smash by The Mavericks, "I don't care if you love me anymore", and Willie Nelson's take on the Satchmo classic "What a Wonderful World". And Andie MacDowell shows that she can sing just as well as she can act with "Sittin' by the side of the road". This is an album that will lift your spirits...recommended.
<b Amazon.com essential recording

While it didn't do for Louisiana music what the film The Harder They Come did for reggae, the soundtrack to director Jim McBride's steamy and stylized cops-and-corruption movie is a pretty good introduction to the region's extensive musical delights (even if gospel's great Swan Silvertones are from West Virginia). The late Dewey Balfa (who appears in the film's sweet porch-party scene) is to Cajun music's rural past what Terrance Simien and Zachary Richard are to its rocking present. Buckwheat Zydeco is to zydeco what Beausoleil is to Cajun: an intelligent synthesis of the old and new that you can dance to. A lay person's "professional" review:
The purpose of any review is to say why a CD/movie/book is good or bad, not saying something like 'don't waste your time' because 'I, a person with 'credentials' says so' (oh, the arrogance of some folks!). As a person without 'credentials' but with great taste in music and common sense regarding the rules of professional criticism, I would like to state why I happen to think this CD is good.
A) Because it covers a euphonious, rhythmical landscape filled with a wide range of music (and eras), including R&B, Cajun, Zydeco and Gospel. That makes it interesting and flavorful, as well as good listening for those who are fans of those musical genres. B) The music was picked by the filmmaker to create certain moods for certain scenes. So while some of the songs aren't necessarily the best overall representations for those kinds of music, they do have a strong impact of their own for anyone who has seen the film. It goes without saying, if you liked the film, you'll love the music because now you'll be able to get up and dance (well, I originally saw this in a cinema, so I had to contain myself at the time!). C) There are some GREAT songs here, especially the ones by The Swann Silvertones, Beausoleil, Buckwheat Zydeco and yes, Aaron Neville, whose interpretation of "Tell It Like It Is" is among the most beautiful soul ballads ever recorded. It makes my heart quiver! What more can I say?
It is a shame that St. Augustine's Marching Hundred didn't make the album, nor did the king of zydeco, Clifton Chernier, but this CD still offers one a great blend of staying-up-late music; either for partying, or for musing over the blues.

Excellent but could have used more music!!!
Martin Scorsese's epic gangster movie left me breathless and so did the music. I loved the soundtrack so much but there is a lot missing such as the Sex Pistol's version of "My Way" and there were others too. As for the other songs, they are GREAT!!! It starts out perfectly with Tony Bennett's "Rags To Riches" and ends with Eric Clapton's "Layla" (why only the secound half?). In between are the sounds of Aretha Franklin, The Shangri-Las, Bobby Darin, Muddy Waters, and more! It's one of the great soundtrack albums and has a great selection of oldies! Go get it!!

One disc where there should have been two
After watching the movie a few times I had to buy the soundtrack too. And if you like movies like GoodFellas, Casino, A bronx Tale and their soundtracks, this one is definitely worth your money. Though there are missing quite a few songs, like Jerry Vale's 'Pretend you don't see her' and Bobby Vinton's 'Roses are Red, My Love'. The Crystals - And then He Kissed Me, Shangri-Las - The Leader of the Pack. But ok, nothing is perfect. And sometimes we have to do with something that allmost is. Don't expect a 2CD supersoundtrack like the one from Casino, but this one just needs to be in your collection too.

This is really a great movie and really great soundtrack, but it would be nice if all of the songs were on it; George Harrison's "What is Life," for one. They should re-release it with every song. There are so many that bring back so many memories and that span almost 30 years.

Just the tip of the ice berg...
So many songs are missing from the soundtrack. I was only disappointed that they didn't have 'The Bells Of St. Mary' by The Drifters which is played during the execution of Samuel L. Jackson's character. If that was there I would have had no complaint. However, although there are many other songs missing alot of the strongest tracks are on the soundtrack enough to make you remember all you favourite scenes of this classic gangster epic.

Although I've qualms with the movie's distributor, I cannot deny that the soundtrack for "Emma" is one of the most charming, delightful, mischievous, bright, skipping, tripping, happy CD's out there. From the windblown main theme, to the plucked strings of Emma's many schemes, to the Christmas carriage ride, to Regency Dance music (sans Sir Beveridge's Maggot - alas!), Ms. Portman has done an excellent job capturing the spirit of Jane Austen's classic novel. An excellent addition to anyone's musical library, a must for lovers of soundtracks - Austen ones in particular, and a great CD for both the office and the arbor.

This is the most beautiful film score ever. THe music so perfectly expresses the action of the movie you can visualize each scene. Rachel Portman is a genius! The only negative associated with this ravishing CD is the lack of the song Emma and Frank Churchill sing at the Cole's party. THis is a highlight of the film and should have been included.

Emma is a lovely, peaceful soundtrack
I, personally, adore this soundtrack, and I think that all who enjoy classical music should like it as well. The music is calming, fun, and beautiful, and who could NOT like those things? However,(the catch) in being true to her usual form, Portman uses her two themes(the main theme is lovely and lighthearted, the second theme is bouncy and also lighthearted.) many times each. The main theme is so pretty that I could never really get tired of it, but the "happy" theme can wear on you a bit as many times as it is played. There are some tracks that are unique from the rest, one being track 11, which features some elegant dancing music, and there is also also a little Christmas music on another track that is mimimal enough to not be a bother at times other than C-mas. One dramatic motif, practically the only "dark" music on the cd, is very breif whenever it is played, and it helps to change the sameness. If you enjoyed "The Cider House Rules" soundtrack, you will surely like this one, as they are quite similar in areas, and are both very melodious and beautiful. But, as I said to my bro, there IS a problem when you finish listening to a cd and then end up having something else going through your head! (this happend when I had heard some of C.H.R. and then, when it was paused part way through, I started hummin' Emma!) Sometimes I wonder if Ms. Portman listens to her past compositions for inspiration when she is composing the next soundtrack! Oh well, she means well, and hey, it is all great music! This soundtrack works perfectly to sooth and relax you, and can really be enjoyed at anytime, especialy if repetition does not bother you. Enjoy! : )

It goes perfectly with the movie and its one of Rachel Portman's finest compositions....if you like this, you might like Chocolat...which Portman added a little more "spice" to. I recommend this soundtrack to you.

A highlight from the works of Vangelis
1492 is one of the Vangelis soundtracks that will live on longer than his own name. Conquest Of Paradise is undoubtedly his most recognised piece of music, leaving behind even the End Titles from Blade Runner (also a Ridley Scott - Vangelis co-venture) or any of his numerous non-film-music compositions.
Preparing and producing his tale of the famous medieval explorer, Ridley Scott knew he wanted the music to connect the modern viewer with the 15th-century setting. Vangelis was from that point of view the only right choice for composer.
Speaking from a film-score perspective, Vangelis' approach is unique. There is no other composer who combines synthesizer, acoustic orchestra and choir as fluently and powerful as Mr Papthanassiou does. It is a unique and overwhelming sound - tranquil and exhilarating at once. Despite the music largely being dreamy - without obvious narrative structures or changes in pace - it creates a perfect, almost nostalgic, thoughtful mood for each scene.
The famed Main Titles aside, highlights on the album are: the regal choirs of Hispanola, the guitar of Moxica And The Horse and the gentleness of Twenty Eighth Parallel.
There can nothing structurally be said against the quality of this music. The only reason for not liking this soundtrack would be not liking Vangelis' style broadly. If that is so, this album will not convince you of the contrary.
For the other-opinionated of the world: along with Blade Runner, this is a Vangelis album worth your money and time.
From me, this one gets four stars.
Bram Janssen,
The Netherlands

One of the greatest soundtracks, ever!
Ordinarily, one would not think that an electronic sountract would be appropriate for a movie which takes place 500 years ago. However, in the masterful hands of Vangelis, one cannot fathom this soundtrack being done any other way.
The music for this film brings out the the most poignant aspects of Columbus' audacious journey. The glory & honor of exploring, as well as the feeling of an almost morose fear of unknown waters, are all visualized trenchently via Vangelis' music. Crossing the Atlantic has become so commonplace nowadays that it is difficult for us to conceive of it as being anything extraordinary. Vangelis' score takes us back to a time when "Nina" "Pinta" and "Santa Maria" were the only ships to have travelled that far west, ever (with the exception of Leif Erickson). Truly Columbus & his men were the pioneers of trans-Atlantic travel (even though they did not end up where they planned).
I would recommend this CD to just about everyone - even if they have not seen the movie (although I would also urge people to watch the film, as well). This album is a melodious blend of Renaissance and New Age magic!

Who's That Girl
Please, do we even have to ask? This film is a fun, charming, and hysterically funny screwball comedy. Some complained of the accent Madonna uses in the film. Yes, at first it was annoying, but you get used to it. Others complained that the movie was too dumb, and had no charm. Let me set the record straight, this film is supposed to be FUN! Featuring some of Madonna's most memorable songs including Causing A Commotion, The Look Of Love, and of course Who's That Girl. Why weren't these songs The Immaculate Collection?! I think the main reason this film did so bad at the USA box offices is that it got lost in the shuffle of Madonna's Who's That Girl tour. But, you should embrace this great film. An above average movie soundtrack from Madonna
Madonna's film career has never really taken off, despite being launched way back in 1985 with Desperately Seeking Susan. In 1987, she starred in the flop film Who's That Girl. The film showed strong promised, but basically flopped worldwide. The soundtrack to the film, however, was the bigger hit of the two and went on to sell 8 million copies worldwide, and includes some pretty big hits. Granted, the soundtrack isn't Madonna's best - I'm Breathless is - but this is a worthy album for any Madonna fan's collection. If you're a Madonna fan and were thinking of purchasing this record without hesitation, beware! The album has only nine songs on it - and only four of those are by Madonna herself. The others are by lesser-known acts such as Duncan Faure, Club Nouveau, Michael Davidson, Scritti Politti and Coati Mundi! Because of this - and because the record says "Madonna" at the top - I will only be reviewing the songs by Madonna...
Who's That Girl starts with the massive UK No.1 single of the same name, Who's That Girl (10/10). It topped the UK chart in July 1987 and was also a US No.1. The song has some fun lyrics and the bassline and beats are very traditional of Madonna's musical style at the time - very upbeat, poppy and fun. Causing A Commotion (10/10) is the next song. Released in September of 1987, the song peaked at No.4 in the UK and was a big hit with audiences at Madonna's "Who's That Girl?" World Tour in 1987. The song has the usual big beats and catchy, funky and melodic beats to groove around to. The Look Of Love (9/10) is another excellent mid-tempo ballad from Madonna, which peaked at No.9 in the UK in December 1987. The lyrics, "No where to run/No where to hide/From the look of love/From the eyes of mine," are not only catchy, but instantly recognisable. The bassline is heavy and the beat has a great "bouncy" feel to it. The final song from Madonna on Who That Girl - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is Can't Stop (9/10). This song is yet another superb pop dance hit from Madonna. It was never released as a single, like the other three songs I have just written about, but it definitely deserved to be. At almost five minutes, it's the longest song on this soundtrack which gives you more time to get into it. The song sounds almost identical to Where's The Party or Love Makes The World Go Round from Madonna's 1986 release, True Blue. The beat is bouncy, Madonna's voice is on top-form and the vocal arrangement is genius. OK, the lyrics aren't exactly the best in the world - but that doesn't matter! Live a little! Get up and get your groove on to Madge!
OVERALL GRADE: 9/10
The full title of this CD is Madonna "Who's That Girl - Original Movie Soundtrack." I didn't refer to it as this all the way through the review because, well, it'd take up al the space! The songs by Madonna on this CD are all excellent, and the songs by those other artists are rather good too. The cover of the CD has to be the worst CD cover I have ever seen! Madonna's hair is all scratty and scruffy, her lips are too red, the mole is obviously fake - and those eyebrows are hideous! Who on Earth has eyebrows that bushy?! Anyway, you're not buying the CD to look at the cover! You're buying it to listen to the superb music of Madonna! ...

NICE MOVIE!!!!
I liked this movie I remember when it had came on cable television. This movie co-stars Griffin Dunne and Madonna. I think that this is a pretty good movie and Madonna has a Cougar for a pet how awkward. But I enjoyed it. Therefore, I would recommend anyone who likes Madonna or enjoys her movie to buy this one!!!!

Forget 'Who's That Girl'
Try 'What's That Girl Doing'
By 1987, pop-star Madonna was coming off a 3rd top-selling album and a failed film with husband Sean Penn. She soon returned with this, a romantic comedy costarring Griffin Dunne, with the obligatory soundtrack album.

The film failed at whatever Madonna was trying to prove. In it, she portrays a dippy ex-con who turns the Big Apple upside down to clear her name in murder. Along for the ride is a Yuppie lawyer who was assigned to escort her out of town. We get lots of squeaky-voiced Madonna whining in a fake Brooklyn accent. Did Madonna even try to act in this film?
The saving graces go to the animated musical intro, the big cat, and the title song, which Madonna sang.
Otherwise, stay away from this movie. Go listen to the 'Who's That Girl' soundtrack or go watch her "Ciao Italia" VHS/DVD, which was a concert on her 'Who's That Girl' tour.

Well, at least one scene was nice.
Monday, February 16, 2004 / 3 of 5 / Once upon a time, I actually liked Madonna's 'Marilyn' era. Pappa Don't Preach and Open Your Heart showed her dancing around as a pale platinum goddess. This film came out around that time as evidenced by her transformation in the inner city wildlife sanctuary. I'm not sure if this film has crossed over into camp/cult status but it is often referred to as one of the worst films around. Foppish Lauden Trott is set to marry ex-16 Candles bombshell when he runs afoul of Madonna playing a framed convict with a whiney slash freaked out way about her. Hilarity apparently was supposed to ensue. It's a harmless movie that doesn't aspire to be anything more than it is. The cougars were beautiful though.

Haunting, Emotional, Beautiful
What a fantastic original score! You really get your money's worth as there are twenty-eight beautiful and amazing tracks. From the beautiful and haunting 'Hooves' to the country themed 'Angus', this soundtrack works beautifully in step with the film. Listening to this amazing score brings you back into the world of 'The Horse Whisperer'. Thomas Newman is defintely a composer to watch for! He has composed music for crtitically acclaimed films such as 'The Shawshank Redemption', 'The Green Mile', and 'Little Women'. Among all of these amazing scores, I think 'The Horse Whisperer' to be the best. My personal favorites are 'The Whisperers', 'There Was Snow', 'Runaway Meadow', 'The Rhythm of the Horse', 'Hooves', and 'End Title'. It's hard to pick just a few favorites. This score is really just amazing, you have to get it! The film is one of the most moving and touching films I have ever seen, so you should see that as well and see how the score flows amazingly with the movie.

Changed My Life
I have one word to describe this album: "Amazing". I have never heard anything more beautiful, more awe-inspiring, more hauntingly gorgeous than this score. It is Thomas Newman at his best. It was because of this work that I sought out other works done by this composer. This album reflects so beautifully the soft winds of a winter storm through flutes and fiddle... Or the mystery of a dark forest through light piano and violin. This is about 75% relaxing and 25% upbeat and energetic. Just because it's soft doesn't mean it's "easy-listening" or "New Age"... It falls into a category all it's own. This CD is perfect to bring on a journey up to a mountaintop to accent nature's glory, or while home with a loved one to romance the senses, or to listen to while on a deserted beach. It reflects the "feel" of the movie perfectly and envelops you into emotion. For a Thomas Newman fan, it doesn't get much better than this! This music is much less like "American Beauty" or "Road To Perdition" and more flowing and "etheric" like "The Green mile" and "Horse Whisperer". Whether a long time fan or a new listener, this album will get you hooked, and most likely become your new favorite soundtrack/album.

original and hauntingly beautiful
I saw the movie, "The Horse Whisperer," when it first came out in theatres. It was a great story and I felt that they could have done more with it. But three things stood out: the exquisite views of Montana on the big screen, looking like the last of the Wild West; the breakout performance by a very young Scarlett Johansson, playing the young adolescent who lost part of her soul when she lost part of her leg (this movie offers as part of its story line how the Horse Whisperer heals the girl in the process of working with her horse); and an unforgettable musical score by Thomas Newman.
This was the musical score which got me to pay attention to the musical scores of all movies and to start incorporating CD's of the ones that I love into my music collection to continue to enjoy beyond watching the movies. There are selections in this score that are whimsical or saucy or sad or full of inspiration or longing (or sometimes both). I suspect that Thomas Newman plays the piano himself for this score; nothing else can explain the sweetness and depth that the performer communicates with such soft and simple notes. The string performances are very good, too.
This score continues to be something I listen to again and again. Favorite selections include "There Was Snow" (you can listen to a bit of it using the Amazon Music Sampler for this CD) and "Grace," the theme music for the character played so masterfully by Scarlett Johansson. The movie is worth seeing for her performance but the score transcends the movie.

"The Horse Whisperer" is simply enchanting; detailing every bit of Newman's genius. Listen to this album at least twice over, before determining your opinion. Its always subtle, and occasionally rustic tunes mightn't encapsulate you first hand. But once you are taken captive, you cannot get out. It is a masterpiece one must unravel to appreciate. A Patriotic masterpiece
John Williams has long been known for his bombastic scores. Then comes along something like this score. Although "The Patriot" has many finely crafted action cues, Williams choose a more mature approach to this music. And it can be felt from the first cue with his haunting main theme for solo violin and strings. Then seguing into snare drums and fife followed by a full statement of the theme through brass. One of the best themes Williams has ever written. Cue's 4 and 7 boldly state the main theme with terrific brass and percussion orchestrations. Cue 8 is one of the best on the CD, beautiful music that embodies family and love. This is not a wholly original score, there are definate echoings to "Amistad" and "Born on the Fourth of July." But, none the less it is one of his best. Music that captures the Revolution but most importantly the relationship between a father and his son's. Certainly a score that will earn him another Oscar nomination.

Outstanding! One of Williams' best!
Wow! After getting started into soundtracks by liking John Williams' works, I've really grown fond of James Horner's scores, and have scads of those. I still have liked Williams, but have not payed as much much attention to his scores of late. Angela's Ashes, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List; all nice, pleasant (if not sad) scores, but not the kind that really grabbed me (Star Wars, Jurassic Park Main Themes).
But now along comes The Patriot, and all I have to say is THAT Williams is back here! I was looking forward to the movie, and was quite glad when I found Williams was going to do the soundtrack. I knew it would be something good, but I guess I like it even more than I thought I would. It's very powerful, moving, and patriotic, and takes the listener on quite a ride.
The music is not done with a lot of drums and fife, as one might expect for a movie about early Americana, but instead paints a very grandoise, and majestic picture of the time period, and the country. The middle tracks are the action music, and sound a lot like Jurassic Park or Star Wars action music. But they still have their distinct feel, and are quite driving in nature.
This soundtrack really has all of Williams' styles in it. It has the sad, moving music like Schindler's List and Angela's Ashes, patriotic music like Saving Private Ryan; majestic and triumphant cues like Jurassic Park's theme; and the sustained, bold melodies of Star Wars. In my opinion, this could quite possibly be Williams' best work thus far, and definitely is right up at the top. Long live John Williams!

A stirring patriotic score with lots of feeling
After David Arnold's score for The Patriot got rejected, John Williams was brought in to replace him and once again, he did a phenomenal job. Williams' score was nominated for an academy award in 2000, but lost to Tan Dun's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. As Williams usually does in his scores, he delivers a concert version of the theme in the first and last tracks. It builds slowly from a solo for fiddle into a triumphant orchestral performance. The theme itself reminds me of Far and Away in parts. It is complete with horn solos, snare drums, and piccolos that dance around with the orchestra. As "Hymn to the Fallen" utilized a choir and was for the most part heartbreaking and full of emotions, "The Patriot" does not use a choir anywhere and is heroic and patriotic. The theme returns in several of the other tracks, mainly in "The Family Farm", "The Colonial Cause", and "Martin VS. Tavington". The action music is standard Williams action music with the likes of The Phantom Menace. "Redcoats at the Farm and the Death of Thomas" contains some awesome percussion and bass with immense horns. Most of the action cues are dark with strings, brass, driving percussion and propulsive rhythms as in "Preparing For Battle", "The First Ambush and Remembering the Wilderness", "Tavington's Trap", and "Martin VS. Tavington". There are some lighter and heartfelt moments in the score as well, as in "Ann & Gabriel" and the beautiful "Susan Speaks". Overall, an outstanding score with 72 minutes of music and a knockout orchestral performance.

A Different Musical Side of War
A surprisingly quiet and moving score for a historical wartime epic, "The Patriot" begins with an aching solo violin, segues into fifes and drums and on to the rich brasses Williams so often uses, and goes on through 17 gently throbbing tracks heavy with a sense of the time and place invoked. Once again you wonder at how one man can immerse himself so thoroughly in so many environments, from the distant deep-space culture of "Star Wars" to this thoroughly Earth-grounded tale of a reluctant warrior, and make music that is simultaneously unique to each and recognizably his own. This is not so much music to thrill by, as to reflect by--perhaps a good CD to have on the turntable as you look through your latest book about the heroes of 9/11.

Take my hand and let me touch you.
Bette gave her best performance as the Janice Joplin character, demonstrating how well she absorbed the sorrow and the need to touch, be touched and loved by as many people as possible. She gave us a glimpse of her soul with each song as if the woman on the screen knew she would die young and she wanted to leave everything musically in her for all those people who would come later and realize the greatness of her music and the torment in her heart. When she sang The Rose as the credits rolled, and her character had died, she sang it with such a sense of peace, as though at long last she had discovered the love and acceptance that was too often denied while still with us.

Bette Midler sings herself to an Oscar nomination
The soundtrack for this 1979 film is the most paradoxical album of Bette Midler's career. "The Rose," the album, is arguably the best of Midler's live albums, but the songs are all new and more in the mode of rock 'n' roll ala Janis Joplin than the 1940s boogie woogie and other song types that brought Midler to prominence. As if to underscore the point, "The Rose," the song, plays to Midler's strengths as a vocalist while running counter to all the other songs on the album. It is a beautiful song and there really is a sense in which it is the only true Bette Midler song on the album, because the rest are being sung by Mary Rose Foster, a.k.a. "The Rose," the singer. But overall, the soundtrack is basically the best parts of the film.
With "Midnight in Memphis" Midler proves she could be a pretty great blues signer and "Stay With Me" takes on almost epic proportions as the Rose self-destructs on stage before her hometown audience. The flaw of this album, if you want to call it that, is that these songs are performed in character. You have to pity the person who pickes up this soundtrack without having seen the film and does not understand why Midler's voice goes through some serious deterioration in the final set of tracks. Compare "Stay With Me" with her cover of "When a Man Loves a Woman" and you have a sense of what might have been (or the version on "Divine Madness"). Still, there is something to be said for staying faithful to the film in this regard, which is why it is a pity the concert monologue has been sanitized. Of course, if you have seen the movie then you have to wonder why the tour de force version of Bob Seger's "Fire Down Below," which the Rose does with a bevy of female impersonators, was ommitted from the soundtrack because there is no way it would be considered the least worthy song from the film.
This album was produced by Paul Rothchild, who also did "Pearl," Joplin's final studio album, which certainly explains how Midler manages to capture the Joplin sound during the concerts recorded in the summer of 1978. You have to wonder what sort of demons Rothchild exorcised in putting this album together. The album made it to #12 on the Billboard charts while the the cover of "When a Man Loves a Woman" made it to #35 and then the title song made it to #3 as a single after Midler got her Oscar nomination (how it avoided hitting the top I do not know). In retrospect it seems there was no place for Midler to go but down after her smash film debut, but while she has never had a cinematic success to rival "The Rose," this is the film that put her on the A list of performers, a spot that she still inhabits. Final Note: I always liked "Camellia," the instrumental piece that Steve Hunter wrote as the Rose's introduction music. Like most of the songs on this album, it is one when the images of the film and the music are entwined in my mind.

Enjoyable
Midler fans beware - the title track aside, this not the middle-of-the-road, adult-contemporary pop that the woman has made her trademark over most of her career. It's Memphis-tinged rock-and-blues sung in the persona of the fictional film character. Midler's voice isn't perfectly suited to the material - no one will ever mistake her for Janis Joplin - but she certainly gives it a game go and her performances are ultimately credible and winning. Classic R&B numbers like "When A Man Loves A Woman" and "Stay With Me" not only sidestep the potential for sacrilege and disaster; they manage to be fresh, potent declarations of pain. "Love Me With A Feeling" has a nice bluesy shuffle; other numbers are more straight-forward rock, filtered through Muscle Shoals.
The album's succeeds in no small part due to the able musicians backing Midler. They are more than some ad-hoc Big Brother and the Holding Company; they have the bite and energy of a real band. I'd have liked to see them showcased even more on the record. (They do get a brief instrumental number to themselves.)
And then there's the Big Hit Ballad, which seems to come from another musical universe entirely. It doesn't fit the album at all; it's as if tracks 1-11 are song by The Rose (the character from the movie) and track 12 is sung by Bette Midler (the AC superstar). But at least the version included here is the piano-only track, which I much prefer to the orchestra-backed single version.
Not Janis, but not a knock-off either, this is music to be enjoyed in its own right. You can argue that this isn't "real" rock/blues - it's an actor giving a performance. Maybe so, but at least it's a *good* performance, of good songs.

Bette Midler CAN do rock and roll!
Bette Midler shows us she can do blood and guts rock and roll on this #12, double platinum smash album! Midler's voice is in the same league as Joplin on this superior rock and roll album. If you love TRUE rock and roll, buy this album. Midler pulls it off perfectly! Trust me when I say. Midler's version of When A Man Loves A Woman is excellent as rock and roll and somehow sounds completely different from a woman's point of view. Stay With Me, a Midler classic, is astonishing. You can feel the pain of the song as Midler takes you for a ride. Sold My Soul to Rock and Roll and Keep On Rockin' will have you screaming along with Midler! You won't be able to help yourself! Powerful, Moving, Disturbing, Unpleasant at Times
The movie "The Rose" tells the story of a rock star's descent into the crazy, chaotic, self-destructive world of drug addiction along with her rise to fame. The soundtrack mirrors that but, for me, it does too good a job. The music starts off harsh and overpowering, but with glimmers of quality and meaning. As the soundtrack progresses, the music descends into chaotic harshness and loses its quality and meaning.
And then, just as you want to turn it off and throw it away, because it's so painful, there is the song "The Rose". It mirrors the singer's sudden enlightenment and is truly enlightening and inspiring. I am a clinical psychologist who works with children and teenagers and, with the children 12 and up, I sometimes use these lyrics as a basis for discussing defensiveness, guardedness, and the losses involved with protecting oneself too much from life. This is often relevant for foster children, who were (sadly but unfortunately necessarily) taken away from extremely neglectful or abusive parents. Such children sometimes protect themselves from pain by distancing themselves from everyone, thus removing pain (and love) from their lives. "The Rose" is all about facing that pain in order to get the love.
It's too bad the rest of this music is not as good as the one song. But, I treasure that one song.

<b Amazon.com

It's got to be a bit strange for Vonda Shepard. This is her album--she sings and writes the songs--and yet she takes second billing to the TV show that features her as the singer in the unnamed bar. Granted, Shepard had released many solo albums on her own before Ally made her a known commodity, and the songs here are geared to mirror Ms. McBeal's many moods. Here, Shepard is helped out by an impressive cast. Her backing band includes drummer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), bassist Davey Faragher (Cracker), and guitarist Val McCallum (Peter Gabriel), and her guest vocalists include the Reverend Al Green for a stunning duet on Lulu's To Sir, with Love," and the Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers on "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow." Rounding out the anthemic originals are covers of Don McLean's "Vincent," Peter & Gordon's "World Without Love," and the Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart of Mine" that unfortunately serve to insinuate that Shepard is not a singer-songwriter but merely a cover girl. --Rob O'Connor
... Read more
Reviews (51)

An Emotional Experience In Song
This is, without question, the greatest compilation of songs from David E. Kelley's "Ally Mcbeal". Songs taken from the third season, a pivotal season because Billy (played by Gil Bellows) dies of a heartattack. It is a time of great heartache and crisis in Ally Mcbeal's life. The romantic disillusion and overwhelming sadness truly makes quality music. Perhaps a lot of music listeners dislike sentimentality, and melancholia, but a lot of great songs in the twentieth century have been tinged with sorrow- Motown made various songs of heartbreak, Dan Mclean, Roy Orbison and various other artists. Grief and sorrow is a part of human nature and real life.
Ally Mcbeal's melancholia seems most poignant in the song "100 Tears Away" but perhaps most powerful in "Crying." These classic songs of woe are sung impressively by the very talented Vonda Shepard. Don Mclean's "Starry Night" is genuinely moving. All the songs are Vonda Shepard renditions, with a few ensemble help. But the sad magic of the show comes alive, making a vivid, lasting impression. This cd was a great way for myself to purge in my own sorrow- my heart was broken in an unsuccessful romantic relationship. Perfect for indulging in sadness (but only to overcome the sadness) are the songs "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted", "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow" "This Is Crazy Now" and "I Know Him By Heart.".

Another winner for Ally or Vonda fans
Though not as overly catchy as the first "Ally McBeal" soundtrack, which boasted superb remakes of "Walk Away Renee," "You Belong to Me," and "Tell Him" (the latter of which proved to be a fan favorite at Vonda concerts), "Heart and Soul: New Songs from Ally McBeal" proves to be another pleasant listening experience. Remakes of the Supremes' "Someday We'll Be Together" and Don McLean's "Vincent" are standouts, and a remake of Lulu's "To Sir With Love" (here, a duet with Al Green) is worth the price of admission all on its own. Another bonus is a complete reworking of "100 Tears Away," a song from Vonda's 1991 sophomore release. Unfortunately a couple of really great covers made for the show were overlooked (the Pointer Sisters' "Fire" and Carly Simon's "Anticipation") and three songs from Vonda's last release, "By 7:30" is a bit much for fans who already own that work. Still, after she spent years recording and performing great music to little acclaim or attention, it's great to see Vonda Shepard still riding the crest of her much-deserved popularity.

Baby, don't you break my heart slow
I have to admit, this is not my type of music. I prefer music that is harder edged than Vonda Shepard. I loathed the tv series "Ally McBeal". The show was annoying from the beginning all the way to the end. Unfortunately couldn't resist Vonda Shepard's duet with Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow" so I bought a used copy of the second soundtrack from the vomit-inducing television series. Vonda does have a pleasant enough voice to sit through ten songs to get to the one song I really like. Vonda has a bluesy quality in her voice. Most of the songs on the cd were pretty tolerable. I did enjoy the gospel-influenced "Sweet Inspiration" and the gorgeous Roy Orbison ballad "Crying". Unfortunately I thought Vonda's interpretation of Don McLean's "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" was insipid. I didn't like the original version to begin with so no improvement could be ever made on this song. "What Becomes (of the Brokenhearted)" makes up for the song. I actually like Vonda's version. As for my personal favorite song on the cd "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow", I loved the heartfelt lyrics and the melodies were just so darn catchy. It is hard not to have this song stuck inside your head. Overall I do like this cd. It isn't a bad cd but not what I consider to be as good as say as a Tori Amos cd. I consider "Heart and Soul" a guilty pleasure of mine.

Collection of Introspective originals and covers from Vonda
This is a great collection sung by a relatively unknown singer. Her songwriting is highly commendable on "100 Tears Away" (one of the best songs on this album) and "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow". Covers like "Crying", "Sweet InSpiration", "To Sir, With Love" and "Vincent" are also highly listenable. What strikes me is her strong voice and ability to sing a song almost better than the original. The Beach doesn't quite qualify as a desert island disc
After viewing the trailer for The Beach last year, I was more impressed by the list of artists that were featured on the soundtrack than by the preview itself. Leave it to filmmakers Danny Boyle and Andrew MacDonald and executive producer DJ Pete Tong, to select a provocative set of mainly techno songs as the music for the motion picture based on British author Alex Garland's first novel. Featuring contributions from well-known dance acts such as Leftfield, Moby, Orbital, and Underworld, The Beach Soundtrack seemed like a great addition to any techno collection, like last year's Run Lola Run Soundtrack.
On a number of tracks, Blur and Madonna's current producer, William Orbit, added his talent for mixing musical arrangements. Unfortunately, even Orbit could not help the tacky lyrics and vocals of All Saints, a group of Spice Girl wannabes. In contrast, his remix of Blur's "On Your Own (Crouch End Broadway Mix)" (the original version can be found on Blur's self-titled album) is full of groovy rhythms, fast beats, and a twisted take on Damon Albarn's playful vocals.
Even though it was a better alternative to their usual MTV- and radio-friendly songs, Sugar Ray's cover of Brian Eno and John Cale's "Spinning Away" (originally on the duo's album Wrong Way Up) sounds like it belongs in a cheesy, early '90s film, such as Reality Bites, than in one about discovery and adventure. Perhaps the original version would have been a more fitting selection.
After an eight-year hiatus, New Order returns with "Brutal." Even with the distinct vocals of Bernard Sumner, the song does not equal the appeal of the group's earlier work on "Republic" and "Movement."
The Verve's singer and songwriter, Richard Ashcroft, contributed vocals to the sublime "Lonely Soul" for UNKLE's (DJ Shadow and James Lavelle) album, Psyence Fiction, in 1996, when the northern English group first disbanded. The haunting lament was a fine choice for The Beach Soundtrack, because it evokes the idea of survival. Another standout track was Underworld's nine-minute "8 Ball," which highlights Karl Hyde's gentle tenor and streams-of-consciousness lyrics. Angelo Badalamenti, the composer of the music from "Twin Peaks," teamed up with Orbit to produce the final cut, Orbital's "Beached."
Overall, the music for Boyle and MacDonald's first two films, Shallow Grave (which featured several memorable tracks by Leftfield) and Trainspotting, were stronger efforts than this latest soundtrack. Based on the noteworthy work by some of these artists, such as Underworld and New Order, you will be better off buying their earlier, full-length releases than sampling their songs through this soundtrack. This album would be an ideal choice to prepare for club outings, yet it lacks the potential to be an essential desert island disc.

This is one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard! There is not one bad track on this album...at least, I think so. Leftfield gives the ambient track "Snakeblood", the CD's opener, a very wanderlust feel, which makes the CD's overall listening experience more excitng. Moby's euphoric ditty, "Porcelin" just screams paradise. You'll know what i mean once you hear it. Blur's "On Your Own", remixed by William Orbit, has an electro- magnetic pulse backed by hard drum and bass and guitars. A definite breakthrough in electronic composition. This album never gets boring. Its a guarenteed Top Ten in the soundtrack catagory. If you like dreamy ambient, techno or electro- funk beats, this album is for you. A definite keeper.

Great soundtrack to one of my favorite movies
First off Jordan from Cuba, the song you're looking for is "Pure Shores" by All Saints.
This CD is just amazing. I bet the songs would be good on a stand alone level but I connect the songs to the movie and it is just makes listening to the songs that much more enjoyable as memories of the movie fill my head.
Alex Garland truly wrote a great epic with The Beach(also check out his book The Tesseract) and Danny Boyle did a great job bringing the book to film and helping produce an amazing soundtrack.
I have a list of songs that I absolutely love, the emotion filled 'Voices', the smooth and relaxin 'Pure Shores', the dark and mysterious 'Snakeblood', the catchy rhytm of 'Spinning Away', and and 'Beached' is a great track that highlights Richard's(Leo Dicaprio), the poetic and truthful voiceovers throughout the movie over some cool beats.
'8 Ball' definitely has its moments as does 'Lonely Soul' and 'Brutal'. Of course nothing more needs to be said about 'Porcelain'.
If you loved The Beach, this soundtrack will bring that gripping and powerful story right back into your head. If you haven't, go watch The Beach(read the book too) and be amazed at how these songs capture the movie perfectly.

Groovin' at the Beach
I love this soundtrack because it encompasses so many different moods. It goes from laid back and not a care in the world to high energy and fast beats. It's the perfect mix of songs for any sunny day, be it at the beach or not.

<b Amazon.com

Modern Hollywood has developed a tradition of releasing similarly themed pictures in near pairs, but who'd have thought it would release two films with a central theme of societal scapegoating within weeks of each other in '99--and that one of them would be South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut? Spike Lee's Summer of Sam is a little more straightforward in its telling of a New York neighborhood's descent into paranoia and finger-pointing as a serial killer stalks its streets in the summer of '77, and while its soundtrack doesn't plumb the scabrous, madcap satiric depths of Messrs. Parker and Stone, it's a serviceable--if occasionally threadbare--collection of period rock (The Who chestnut "Baba O'Riley"), pop (ABBA's "Dancing Queen," "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin Bishop), funk (Roy Ayers's "Running Away," "Got to Give It Up" by Marvin Gaye), and a whole lot o' 1970s disco/club music (Chic's "Everybody Dance," "Best of My Love" by the Emotions, "La Vie en Rose" by the incomparable Grace Jones among them). Oddly missing for a film in which one of the main characters sports a nascent Mohawk is any hint of the era's--and region's--blossoming punk and new wave music. Still, it's a thematically sound, smartly sequenced collection that evokes both era and atmosphere well. --Jerry McCulley
... Read more
Reviews (13)

I am a huge fan of soundtracks specifically for the variety and the mood they create. This one does a fabulous job in both categories. I really enjoy this CD because it does have some of the more popular 70s songs, but they aren't all disco. (Ok, so "Dancin' Queen" is my favorite song.) Nevertheless, if you liked the movie then you'll love the soundtrack.

I got this in the local store thinking there was going to be the song "Hello From The Gutters" which was actually recorded and performed by the actors (!). Unfortunately it wasn't on there and I don't know where to find that song or if it even exists at all on CD. With the exception of the two Who songs (especially "Baba O' Riley") there is not a shred of punk in this album.
But, the disco and pop and such work well here. "There But For The Grace of God" was probably the best song with the best message, and ABBA always works wonders. Chic's "Everybody Dance" is another classic, though I'm convinced they used it in the wrong movie scene. Also of interest are the various soul and diva anthems. Of course you can't go wrong with the Who.

The only real standout as far as disco music is concerned on the "Summer of Sam" CD is the cut by Machine...a song I'd never heard or heard OF before I watched the movie. But "Fooled Around and Fell in Love?" (I'm tired of typing quotation marks now) Boogie Nights. Don't Leave Me This Way? 54 (It was even in each movie's trailer!) Best of My Love? Opening sequence of Boogie Nights. Got To Give It Up? Boogie Nights AGAIN. A song that DID appear in SOS actually WAS the Heatwave cut Boogie Nights, which never, ironically, showed up in the Boogie Nights movie...doesn't it seem like the powers that were could have included a song like that on the SOS soundtrack instead of ones we've heard over and over? Like one other reviewer said, if you like the song by Machine this CD is worth the fifteen or so bucks. If not...listen to your Boogie Nights soundtrack. Or...your 54 soundtrack...etc.

A Soundtrack more than meets the eye (ok, not original...)
Damn good soundtrack. I recently bought the movie and got rehooked on transformers in general, and the pure 80's music soundtrack just rocks. My only problem with the CD is that there isn't a complete set of the score by Vince DiCola (rocky and rocky 4's composer). I highly recommend the CD and movie, especially if you remember the 80's and were hooked on Transformers.

Two great tastes that taste great together!
Ah, the eighties, era of some of the coolest playthings ever made from die-cast and plastic, and big-hair heavy metal tunes. Being one who grew up in this period, I was exposed to a pretty good helping of both. And with 'Transformers: The Movie', both of these indelible marks on 1980's pop culture crossed paths on the cinematic plane. The soundtrack CD features more than a few hard-rocking cuts ('Hunger', 'Nothing's Gonna Stand In Our Way', Instruments of Destruction'), acting as a counterpoint to the synthesized background score.
Although the performing artists are fairly obscure (with the big exception of "Weird Al" Yankovic), many of the songs are quite memorable. A good case in point is Lion's operatic metal performance of the Transformers theme, the only rendition commercially available on CD. But after you've heard it, the TV version of the song pales in comparison.
But out of all of them, Stan Bush's inspirational "The Touch" was quite possibly the most memorable track, as it was used in the trailers and TV spots for the movie. It was the song that identified itself with the film, much like 'Mrs Robinson' did for 'The Graduate', or 'Dueling Banjos' with 'Deliverance'.
It's a shame there's not more music. The CD is only about 40 minutes in duration, and what with the movie being about 90 minutes and all, it's a pretty fair bet that some tunes were left out.
'Late...

A great pop rock/metal soundtrack, though not perfect
Transformers: The Movie Soundtrack(1986). Music taken from the Transformers motion picture movie.
If you were a kid of the 80s like me, you'd have to be living under a rock in a far distant land not to at least know what the Transformers phenomenon was. And that's exactly what it was, A PHENOMENON. Transformers were to the mid-80s what Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were to the early 90s and Pokemon to the late 90s: a kid's dream come true. There was the great cartoon that started the whole craze, but kids remembered Transformers the most by the impressive line of toys. I had quite a few of them, and so did most every kid I knew. The franchise slowed down a bit towards the mid 90s, but as far as I know, they are still making Transformers cartoons today.
Of course, at the height of Transformers' popularity came a full-length big-screen movie, which was excellent for its time, though it also caused the series to take a slight downturn due to the scene where Optimus Prime dies (ALL fans can agree that this greatly changed the series). But one aspect that made the movie so memorable was its outstanding music soundtrack. Armed with a score that was created by Vince DiCola (also worked on Rocky IV) and a slew of pop rock and pop metal songs by various people, the Transformers movie soundtrack ended up being an outstanding movie soundtrack that often goes overlooked in the context of soundtracks from the period. Here's an analysis of the tracks:
Tracks 1 & 4 are both Stan Bush songs. 'The Touch' is a good opener, while 'Dare' is more of an uplifting power pop song with an infectious chorus (but then again, has Stan Bush ever made a song that isn't catchy?). Both are pretty good pop songs. 'Instruments Of Destruction' is a sinister pop metal song performed by N.R.G. Never heard of these guys, but they sounded pretty good for the time, and it's too bad that they never took off. My favorite tracks are the two by a band called "Spectre General" (the actual name of this canadian band is Kick Axe, though for some reason their name was changed on here even though the band never agreed to it! Strange.) 'Nothin's Gonna Stand In Our Way' is a pounding rocker, and 'Hunger' is probably one of Kick Axe's best anthemic headbanger songs, despite the fact that it was never released on any of their albums. Then there's 3 cool Vince DiCola instrumentals taken from different scenes of the movie. 'Autobot/Decepticon Battle' and 'Escape' are both very fast-paced and energetic, while 'Death Of Optimus Prime' is melancholic and sad (just like it's supposed to be). After that is the awesome version of the Transformer's title theme performed by a band called Lion (I'm not sure if they're supposed to be an early incarnation of the band White Lion or not, it's hard to tell). However, the most bizzaire surprise on the soundtrack is the very last song called 'Dare To Be Stupid' performed by none other than Weird Al Yankovich! It's a hilarious and awesome parody of Devo's 'Dare To Be Different'. It's not something you'd expect to hear, but somehow it fits.
In the end, the Transformers Movie soundtrack is well put together, and serves as an excellent platter of good pop rock and pop metal songs to anyone who remembers them. My only complaint, besides the Kick Axe moniker "Spectre General", and the reason why I only gave it 4 stars is because there were several instrumental pieces in the movie that aren't present, especially the 'Unicron Theme'. Still, you can't go wrong with this soundtrack, and it's highly recommended to all fans of the movie.
Other similar soundtracks:
-Robotech Perfect Soundtrack Album
-Rocky IV Movie Soundtrack
-Top Gun movie Soundtrack
-Project A-Ko Original Soundtrack
Also, if you liked the two "Spectre General" songs, you'll also like:
-'Vices' by Kick Axe
-'Welcome To The Club' by Kick Axe

But few of Wonderland's plot devices work quite as convincingly at portraying these themes as the movie's soundtrack. Filled with the classic sounds of bossa nova and samba, these songs ooze with the melancholy found in the movie. There's a lot of great stuff here: classic Astrud Gilberto, Coleman Hawkins, Marcus Valle, new interpretations of Jobim. But the unexpected highlight is the original score: Claudio Ragazzi backed by the smooth-as-flan vocals of avant-jazz-guitarist-gone-Jobim-freak Arto Lindsay. Their trio of bossa-nova inspired collaborations sounds as sweet and timeless as the classic originals here. Fantastic Bossa Nova Soundtrack + another recommendation
I wrote a review of this a few years ago, and like another reviewer, still love this CD. I recommend it to people in music stores all the time since usually, if someone is in the Brazil section they ask me about the movie and I then have to point them to the soundtrack.
Also, the Sarah Vaugh version of Wave is not on this cd, but the original Antonio Carlos Jobim version is. What is special about this CD is that it includes many of the older tracks of Bossa Nova and has an original score which defines that moment in time in Boston and the movie. Rarely do you find a soundtrack that so matches the feel of a movie like this. Bebel Gilberto gets her first "real" notice from this album, in fact, redoing versions of songs from her father, Joao, and a wonderful acoustic remake of "Uma Nota So" and "The Girl From Ipanema". A year later, Bebel Gilberto was featured in "Brasil 2Mil" compilation and then in 2000, released her own feature release "Tanto Tempo".
This is an exceptional soundtrack which will not disappoint. If you enjoy Airto Lindsey's or Claudio Ragazzi's music, or simply love the sounds of the old Bossa Nova era you will enjoy this CD.
ALSO - If you have this soundtrack and are looking for something similar, look into the soundtrack of the movie "Bossa Nova". The movie itself is based in Brazil and this soundtrack is in the same mold really - featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina. You won't be disappointed.

An excellent compilation
I've never seen the movie, so I don't know how well the music is integrated in the film, but the music itself is quite superb. It presents a pretty even mixture of new and old Brazillian music. The best song, in my opinion, is "Batucada" sung by Babel Gilberto and Vinicius Cantuaria - his voice is like silk. This song is worth the CD alone. The percussion is excellent. You also get a lot of music on this CD. If you're looking for a primer on Bossa Nova this is a good selection.

<b Amazon.com

The initial effort in what's become an ongoing collaboration between filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore and composer Ennio Morricone (in this instance assisted by his son Andrea) remains one of the Italian musician's most internationally beloved works. The bittersweet tale of a young boy's friendship with the local cinema projectionist and the profound, almost magical influence the movies have on both their lives won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and the Best Foreign Film Oscar, and netted Morricone a BAFTA (U.K. equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Score. In the late '90s, the music also received one of America's other great "honors"--it was adapted for a car commercial! The score is among Morricone's most elegant and memorably melodic, effectively evoking a rich cinematic legacy; it's a virtual musical love letter to the power of films and their music. --Jerry McCulley
... Read more
Reviews (27)

One of Morricone's best, but not his BEST.
'Cinema paradiso' won't be the same movie without the great score. However, I do believe that Ennio Morricone's best score is 'once upon a time in america'. These two, along with 'once upon a time in the west' and 'the mission' are his top four, and are must have for music lovers.
IMHO, Ennio Morricone is the BEST movie composer of all time. If he were not an Italian, he would have garnered Oscars multiple times. It was really a joke that the Academy failed to nominate 'cinema paradio' for the best music score and honored it a win. Meanwhile, does anyone seriously believe that the music score for 'a passage to india' is better than that of 'once upon a time in america'? I don't think so!

Essential '60s soundtrack
I saw the movie when it came out and, like many of my generation, was strongly impacted by it. I've owned the VHS for years and the CD I found as an import from Europe. Sadly, the sound on this CD isn't remastered well and there are no bonus tracks, nothing! Since I have the European release, the only difference is the cover. If you don't have this CD, it's worth owning for the pothead classic, "Don't Bogart Me," and for Roger McGuinn's great versions of "Wasn't Born to Follow" and "Ballad of Easy Rider." Smith did an OK version covering the Band's "The Weight," but, as with all soundtracks, there's some filler. The tunes by Steppenwolf and Hendrix are available elsewhere and "If You Want to Be a Bird" is fun a time for two, but the Fraternity of Man is worth listening to only for nostalgia's sake if you are a Little Feat fan, for after that band broke up, the remaining members emerged as Little Feat. I recommend this solely on the great statement of '60s independence, "Wasn't Born to Follow." That's worth the cost alone. Better yet, get the DVD...
This was Jack Nicholson's breakthrough role. He'd done small roles in movies like Mr. Roberts (or was it Ensign Pulver?), and other biker trash, like "Angels Die Hard." For him, this was just another biker flick. Little did anyone realize that this, followed by "Five Easy Pieces," would give the world a star of major proportions.
Get the CD, get the movie. Relive the '60s, but, hey, don't forget: it IS 2001...
Peace, man.
Jac in Tucson

I was listening to my EASY RIDER album a few days ago, with all the crackles and scratches, when it dawned on me that perhaps AMAZON.COM might have it available on cd. I checked and , sure enough, they did. This is a premium soundtrack frome the hippie era. Its got Hendrix, Steppenwolf, and my favorite Byrd, Roger McGuinn. This is definitely a must for any collection of the psychedelic music days. Long live Captain America!

...get the DVD. The movie itself is a better musical experience. If you're a freak like me who cranks up the volume and just listens to movies on occasion ;-)
A few disappointing points about the CD are:
-The absence of The Band singing their their own great song.
-"Bird" and "Bogart" are longer than I expected. Great songs, but the movie uses these songs in just the right length.
-Clips from the movie are unnecessary and aren't enough to salvage the soundtrack.
On the other hand, the highlights are:
-"Kyrie Eleison" is an excellent psychedlic trip
-The Byrds short-but-sweet track "I Wasn't Born to Follow"
-Of course, "If Six Was Nine" is a great rebellious anthem
-"The Pusher" - A beautiful and trippy bit of blues from Steppenwolf.
-Both cuts from Roger McGuinn are fantastic. Dylan wrote them, but Roger's voice was perfect.
This CD is still a keeper for the nostalgic hippie in everyone.
Peace, love, and freedom.

EASY listening.
Man, this one is even better than the "Graduate" and "Midnight Cowboy" soundtracks. You don't have to have seen the movie to love these songs, but it sure helps. This has got some of everything from the time, and it's all equally good. You get country-rock with "Wasn't born to follow" and "Ballad of easy rider". Stoner-rock with "The Pusher" and "Don't bogart me". And just great classic-rock with "If 6 was 9" and "The Weight". Oh, and there's this other song called "Born to be Wild". Now all you need is a good long open road, and "Captain America's jacket.

After watching the charming and romantic movie; "Sabrina," I had to buy this CD. The songs on it are lovely. My favorite song is "Growing up in Paris." I also loved the "Sabrina" theme song, and "How can I remember." The soundtrack is great, just like the movie, which is about a young girl, who is a chauffer's daughter, who is in love with her handsome neighbor. She goes to Paris and comes back a beautiful and sophisticated woman.

A Good Soundtrack!
Sabrina is a great movie and one of my favorite romantic movies and like these other reviewers I think the music used in Sabrina is beautiful so I bought the soundtrack and I really have no complaints but I just wish that they had used a longer version of La Vie en Rose included as a seperate track and not just as part of another musical selection but other then that it's a good soundtrack. I actually bought the cassette tape and not the CD but I lost the tape and I'm thinking of buying the CD.

While listening to this soundtrack by John WIlliams I was simply awestruck and inspired. Wonderfully engaging...
The "Sabrina" score is elegant, classic, and haunting- I listen to it all of the time and it just creates a beautiful mood. I have found that the best time of year to listen to this cd is the fall because the melodies are soft and twinkle, like falling leaves. However spring and summer are also quite lovely, especially with the top down. Number thirteen is worth the money in my opinion. This is the perfect score in my collection.

Romantic Music to die for. One of Williams' best!
After I saw the movie at a press screening(a few years ago), I ran out to buy the CD but it wasn't available for another week. When I got the CD, it was everything I hoped for and more. It's been a few years and I listen to it now, this music is TIMELESS. It WILL put you in the mood for love and romance. This score reminds me a little of the Witches of Eastwick soundtrack, whick Williams did. But while that is more whimsical and scary, this is romantic, breezy, haunting at times. Sting's 'Moonlight' is a killer. This score and song got nominated for 2 oscars but failed to win(happens, Williams won too many already. Might have won some Golden Globe or Grammies.) Look, everyone here at Amazon gave it five stars, I've bought three(gifts). So take out your credit card and get this CD. It is one of the best CDs I have and you will not regret it, even if you like punk rock.
