               <H2>Minor works funds
               </H2>
               <P>There will be two allocations from the minor works fund during 1997/98 in
               February and May. The deadline for the first round is January 26 but departments
               are required to register their application (intent to apply) giving a brief
               statement and location of works by November 24 to enable adequate preparation of
               bids and costs estimates.  Information and assistance is available from the

               <H2>Management matters
               </H2>
               <P>Procedures for dealing with sickness, dismissal, misconduct and other issues
               have been updated. SDDU is holding two workshops to explain the new procedures
               for staff with management and supervision responsibilities. Handling sickness, a
               half-day workshop on the afternoon of November 7, will cover the scope of the
               agreement, how to handle short- and long-term sickness absence, sick pay
               entitlement, health and safety considerations and the Disability Discrimination
               Act. A half-day workshop on conduct and capability on December 15 will cover the
               concept of discipline and the required skills, the reasons for dismissal,
               examples of misconduct and incapability and how to implement the formal
               procedure in a skilled, fair and effective manner. For details contact Mandy

               <H2>
               Sell yourself
               </H2>
               <P>Sir Tim Bell, the man who steered Margaret Thatcher to three General
               Election victories, will speak at Trinity and All Saints College on 20 November.
               He helped to form the advertising agency Saatchi and Saatchi, and in 1990
               received a knighthood. As Chairman of Lowe Bell Communications he advises many
               of Britain&#146;s most successful companies and foreign heads of state.
               Branding, Reputations and the Media, will be held at 6.30pm. Admission is by
               ticket only &#150; enquiries to Margaret Hampton, 283 7317.
               </P>
               <H2>Telling tales </H2>
               <P>
               Prizewinners in the STAND International Short Story Competition will be reading
               in the School of English on Thursday 13 November  at 7.30 pm. All welcome &#150;
               admission is free. STAND is one of the country&#146;s foremost literary
               magazines. Its editor, Jon Silkin, has a long-standing connection with the
               School of English; he was a Gregory Fellow in the 1960s, and is currently a
               Senior Fellow in Poetry in the School. 
               </P>
               <H2>Revolutionary talk
               </H2>
               <P>A public lecture, Russia: From revolution to revolution, will mark the
               opening of the Leeds University Centre for Russian, Eurasian and Central
               European Studies. Professor Peter Frank, former Leeds lecturer in Russian and
               now at the University of Essex and Channel Four News, will give his lecture at
               5.15pm on 11 November in the Rupert Beckett Lecture Theatre. </P>

               A rhetorical question</H2>
               <P>
               A one-day seminar exploring changing perspectives on the relationship between
               politics, rhetoric and the media through the ages will be held at the School of
               English on January 17. Abstracts for papers must be submitted by 14 November to
               Professor Katie Wales or Dr Lynette Hunter. To attend the Politics, Rhetoric and
               the Media seminar send an SAE and a cheque, payable to the University of Leeds
               (Rhetoric), for &#163;15 to the School of English.
               </P>
               <H2>On a safe course
               </H2>
               <P><A HREF="http://www.leeds.ac.uk/rps/">Health and safety courses </A>are
               being offered by the Radiation Protection and Safety Service, including chemical
               safety on November 6, fire safety on November 17, microbiological safety on
               November 21, inspections and risk assessment on January 19 and manual
               handling/electrical safety on January 26. Further details are available on ext

               <H2>Christmas cracker
               </H2>
               <P>Fairbairn House is taking bookings for Christmas lunches, available from
               December 1 to 19. Details are available on ext 6633.
               </P>
               <H2>Travel plans
               </H2>
               <P>Applications are invited from university administrators for awards from the
               Joan Balchin Memorial Travel Fund. The awards are intended to further the
               education and training of administrators with particular emphasis on assisting
               with travel expenses. The value of awards will be based on the plans of each
               successful candidate and any other available financial assistance. The awards
               are tenable in the UK or overseas and may be held with other awards. Applicants
               must be eligible for AUA membership and should submit detailed proposals of
               travel plans, indicating how their education or training will benefit, to the
               Joan Balchin Memorial Travel Fund Committee, c/o Lynne Bailey, Student Office,
