<P>
With the new semester and academic year arriving on Aug. 20, we can all be forgiven for wondering what happened to summer! (I'm sure that I'm among a small handful of College faculty who can remember when the semester began <I>after</i> Labor Day.)

<P>

Whatever we conclude about increasingly evanescent summers, a lot has managed to happen in the College during these fleeting weeks. Bob Novak was appointed head of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and is hard at work continuing to advance the department's research, teaching, and clinical programs. Patrice Rankin has stepped in as assistant department head in Foreign Languages and Literatures, while Wei Hong has moved to the directorship of the Confucius Institute.

<P>

In Beering Hall, Joan Marshall assumed the richly deserved position of senior associate dean, while Barbara Dixon, no less deserving, was promoted to associate dean and began full-time duties in the College.

<P>

We've also been working on revamping the College's Web site. Check out the feature on the <a href="http://www.cla.purdue.edu/faculty/profiles/">newly promoted faculty</a> who officially assumed their new status on August 13.

<P>
Beverly Davenport Sypher, professor of Communication and associate provost, was named the first occupant of the Susan Bulkeley Butler Chair for Leadership Excellence, bringing to 10 the number of distinguished and named professors in the College.

<P>

The National Youth Sports Program, a camp for more than 300 local youngsters directed by Bill Harper, head of the Department of Health and Kinesiology, garnered widespread notice. Click here for a <a href="http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2007a/070615HarperNYSP.html">video of highlights</a>.

<P>

A record five undergraduate students came to campus under the auspices of the Graduate School's Summer Research Opportunity Program. They worked with outstanding College mentors &#150; Stacey Connaughton (Communication); Stephanie Goodwin (Psychological Sciences); Leonard Harris (Philosophy); Bob May (History); and Steve Wilson (Communication) &#150; and produced very impressive research results. I want to thank Stacey, Stephanie, Leonard, Bob, and Steve for their willingness to work with these student-scholars.

The handshake and milkshake event, with which our new president, France C&oacute;rdova, introduced herself to the Purdue community, was a great success. Although as a transplanted Californian, she was very gracious to compliment our Hoosier weather on that semi-sultry day, many in the crowd suspected that she might change her mind on that score by January. (By the way, Word users have become adept at using the shortcut key alt+0243.) We all look forward to getting to know Dr. C&oacute;rdova and helping her to know the College. Between the milkshakes and handshakes, Dr. C&oacute;rdova introduced Dr. Victor Lechtenberg, vice provost for engagement, as the interim provost. Vic has long and significant Purdue experience and is an inspired choice for the job.

<P>

A special word of thanks to our colleagues in the Department of History who vacated University Hall during the summer break to allow construction workers to install a sprinkler system, elevator shaft, and new front steps. The dust is beginning to settle in the building and soon faculty and staff (who have been operating out of Recitation Hall) will reclaim their familiar digs.

<P>

Best wishes for a wonderful beginning of a new semester!

<P>
Sincerely,
<P>

"His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and has been recognized worldwide for his message of compassion and tolerance, his promotion of human values and interreligious understanding, and his focus on peace through non-violent conflict resolution," said Donald Mitchell, the Purdue professor of philosophy who was instrumental in bringing the Dalai Lama to campus.

His public talk, entitled "Cultivating Happiness," will draw from Tibetan Buddhist and other religious and intellectual traditions. Portions of the public talk will be provided through a translator.

The talk is being presented by the Tibetan Cultural Center in Bloomington, Ind., and Purdue Convocations in cooperation with Purdue's College of Liberal Arts.

Purdue research about how organ donation is portrayed on television has inspired a Hollywood advocacy group.

Susan Morgan, associate professor of Health Communication, has found that inaccurate storylines about organ and tissue donation stop people from registering as organ donors. As a result, Donate Life Hollywood was created to discourage the "stolen-kidney" storyline from television and film, said Tenaya Wallace, director of the national campaign.

<P>"Professor Morgan's research has inspired us to put Hollywood on alert," Wallace said. "We have been passive about this problem, but we now have evidence that what viewers think about organ donation is directly related to what they see in television storylines. This is not just about creative license. We want Hollywood writers, producers, and executives to know there is a public health impact."

"It is natural for scholars, journalists, and historians to begin debating what a president has left behind before that president has even left," said Bert A. Rockman, professor and head of the Department of Political Science.
<P>
"A president's legacy is best determined 100 years after the term, but there is a lot of time between now and then for one's legacy to be defined. Right now, many would say going to war in Iraq has been the defining action of George Bush's presidency, but in 50 or 100 years we may think differently.
<P>
"This book is a first word - not a last one - about Bush's likely impact on the future. No reader will agree with everything here, nor do we."

"Maintaining quality long-term friendships is difficult today because people move frequently and there are many technological and media distractions," says Glenn Sparks, a professor of communication who studied the 19-year friendships of a group of 1983 college graduates. "The geographic and personal distance between people continues to grow, and there are some harmful effects for those who lack quality relationships. Friends are essential because they provide emotional stability in a person's life.
<P>
"Making friends is like managing a bank account. You must make investments, and it is never too early to start."
<P>
Sparks was part of a research team that followed the friendships of 32 pairs of same-sex and 13 pairs of male-female best friends from 1983 to 2002. The initial quality and closeness of their friendships were measured in different ways, including how well they played a game that assessed levels of communication and understanding. Follow-up studies took place in 1987 and 2002.

A Liberal Arts senior is using a contest in which participants test their skills in gathering obscure information off the Internet to make the point that America's future depends upon our ability to mine the increasing amount of information online.
<P>
"We're already a service economy," said Philosophy major Daniel Scott Poynter. "We're not competitive making widgets with our hands, and our white-collar jobs like accounting and programming can often be done for a tenth the price overseas. Our only hope of being competitive is sifting through the data deluge better than anyone else and creating value from mankind's best invention - the Web."
<P>
The pilot project - <a href="http://www.digitalliteracycontest.org/">The Digital Information Literacy Contest</a>: A Contest of Internet Research Skills and Critical Thinking - is scheduled for 6-7 p.m. Aug. 29 in Stanley Coulter Hall, Room 231. The event is free and open to the public to compete. Purdue Libraries is providing free pizza and drinks, and the West Lafayette library is a sponsor. Cash and other prizes will be awarded to winners. This contest is a "proof of concept" - participants will have the opportunity afterwards to help develop the concept and be a part of the formative event.

"<I>The General</i> is considered the greatest silent film of all time," says Lance Duerfahrd, an assistant professor of English who studies film history. "Most of it is filmed aboard moving trains, and Keaton's humor comes from the incredible physical eloquence with which he negotiates gravity, momentum, and velocity. He's a clown, stuntman, missile, engineer, and tragic hero all at once. Keaton's face and its many deadpan expressions on the big screen at the Long Center will be monumental."

Advance tickets for "The General" are $12 for the general public and $7 for students with a Purdue ID. Tickets are available from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Long Center box office, 111 N. Sixth St., or by calling (765) 742-5664 during those hours.
