Danny Albisu is an eight-year old kid, in love with the game of baseball. He came to see the Washington Nationals play spring training games with his dad, Danny, uncle Luis and Luis’ son and Danny’s Godfather, Alex. The others have been to spring training before, but this was Danny’s first trip.

Not only did the Albisu’s see a ballgame, but afterward at the Spring Training season ticket holders party Danny got to meet and get his picture taken with one of his favorite players, none other than Nats phenom Bryce Harper. By the way, Danny thought it was cool that Bryce is only 11 years older than him.

Maybe someday, when Harper is a veteran ballplayer, young Danny might be trying to break into the big leagues. That’s what spring training is for, after all – dreaming big. Anyway, it’s a memory Danny will carry with him for his lifetime.

Only in Spring Training (and sometimes All-Star games) do baseball games end in a tie.

Wednesday the Washington Nationals pushed two across in the bottom of the ninth inning to even the score against the St. Louis Cardinals and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Carlos Maldonado, slated to the a catcher at Triple-A Syracuse, blasted a two-run shot with Tyler Moore aboard against Lance Lynn to force the tie.

The game was highlighted by Jordan Zimmermann’s first start of the spring. The righty threw three innings, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk, striking out three. 2011 draftee Matt Purke followed Zimmermann and gave up a run on four hits in two innings, whiffing two. Cardinals third baseman Daniel Descalso reached Purke for a solo home run.

Ryan Mattheus, Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen all worked scoreless relief innings, but Brad Lidge wasn’t so lucky. The veteran reliever, signed as a free agent from the Philadelphia Phillies, gave up two runs on three hits in his inning of work. He did not walk or strike out a batter.

At the plate, no Nationals player recorded two hits, but Ian Desmond did record his first hit of the spring, a leadoff double in the first inning. Roger Bernadina played the whole game and went 0-for-4, but did have an outfield assist. Anthony Rendon struck out in both his plate appearances.

First baseman Adam LaRoche, who has been limited with foot and shoulder soreness, made his first game appearance — in a Minor League intrasquad contest. He went hitless in four at-bats, walking twice. He did not hit a ball out of the infield. He did not run the bases with lingering soreness in his left foot, leaving open the question of when he will make his Grapefruit League debut.

The Nationals host the Houston Astros on Thursday.

by Katie Edwards, Special to District Sports Page

Following Sunday’s 10-2 loss to the Houston Astros, the Washington Nationals hosted their 2012 Spring Training season ticket holder’s party. The party was packed. I was completely amazed by the number of season ticket holders that there are in this area. For the majority of season ticket holders, this month is their whole baseball season. Those of us who live in or near D.C. are lucky enough to have the team for an entire six months.

Food was catered by Carrabas. There was also a live DJ, giveaways, raffles, and multiple players interacting with the fans. I have been to a lot of these types of events and I can truly say that Bryce Harper, Tyler Moore, and the other players genuinely enjoyed interacting with the fans.

The author and Bryce Harper. (photo courtesy K. Edwards)

The highlight of the event for me was having a one-on-one conversation with Nats owner Mark Lerner. I have read a lot of articles criticizing the Lerner family. I understand how difficult it would be to have an ownership role and please everyone. When I introduced myself as a season ticket holder in both Viera and D.C. he was more than happy to talk Nats baseball with my dad and me.

He told us that he was blown away by the level of dedication that players had to coming to off-season work-outs. He also made it clear that this was the best physical shape he as ever seen an entire team in. We also talked at length about the closeness of the team this year. He explained to us that last year the team was very close, but his year the team is almost interlocked.

Mr. Lerner expressed to us what a great addition Gio Gonzalez was. Outside of his pitching talent he also mentioned several times how impressed he was by what a great guy Gio was. This group of guys has really connected with each other and knows what they have to do to make a winning team. Some of the players that attended the event were Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon, Tyler Moore, Corey Brown, Brad Lidge, Brett Carroll and Ryan Mattheus.

Like the country song says, some days you’re the windshield. Today, Tom Gorzelanny was the bug.

Asked to relieve Stephen Strasburg with two outs in the third inning, Gorzelanny took the mound but provided no relief, as he allowed seven earned runs on three hits, four walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch and two home runs in a 10-2 loss to the Houston Astros to fall 0-2 in their Grapefruit League season.

Strasburg was solid in his 2 2/3 innings. He struck out three without walking a batter in his 44 pitches. He gave up a wind-aided home run in the second inning then ran out of gas in his third inning of work. He took the loss as he left a runner on base when Gorzelanny came in and got lit up.

After Gorzelanny, the Nats pitchers fairly cruised through the next six innings, with only Tyler Clippard running into trouble in the eighth inning, walking two and giving up a solo run. Drew Storen struck out two in a perfect ninth inning.

On the offensive side, Mark DeRosa and Jason Michaels both had two hits to pace the Nats, who out-hit the Astros for the second day in a row in a losing effort. Washington was 3-for-11 with runners on and stranded nine base runners.

Ryan Zimmerman went 1-for-2 in his spring training debut and Bryce Harper beat out an infield hit to go 1-for-2 as well.

Ian Desmond went 0-for-3 with a strikeout leading off and committed two errors.

The Nationals face the New York Mets from Port St. Lucie Monday night at 6:00 pm. John Lannan faces Dillon Gee.

Wins and losses in Spring Training don’t mean a whole lot. Some managers wish they didn’t keep track at all. But they do, and for baseball obsessed fans waiting for the real thing next month, glimmers of the game they’ve missed over the winter have to suffice.

Saturday afternoon, under beautiful Florida skies, the Washington Nationals got their Grapefruit League schedule underway, dropping a 3-1 game to the Houston Astros at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee.

Edwin Jackson drew the first assignment for the Nats, and he pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks without a strikeout. Jackson was opposed by long-time Nats hurler Livan Hernandez, making his Astros debut. Livo allowed three hits, walking none, and struck out two in his two innings.

Jackson was followed by lefty Ross Detwiler, competing for the fifth spot in the Nats rotation. Detwiler struck out three in his two innings, but allowed two runs, both earned, on two hits and a walk. He gave up a two-run homer to Houston third baseman Chris Johnson that barely cleared the wall.

Non-roster invitee Chad Durbin pitched two scoreless, with a hit allowed and two Ks. Atahualpa Severino’s defense let him down in the seventh, with third baseman Carlos Rivero misplaying a ground ball that scored a runner from third, and Sean Burnett cleaned up in the eighth, striking out two and walking one, getting help from first baseman Tyler Moore on a nice play on a ground ball down the line for an out at first.

The Nationals got their run in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Roger Bernadina and Jesus Flores. Both players had two hits in the game, pacing the Nats offense.

Bryce Harper started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a single.

The Nats face the Astros again Sunday at 1:05 at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, FL. Stephen Strasburg takes the hill in his 2012 debut.

The news out of Viera on Sammy Solis is not good. The 23-year old lefty was shut down by the Washington Nationals and will be evaluated by orthopedist Lewis Yocum, with the likely outcome of the dreaded Tommy John surgery. Solis becomes the latest Nats high draft pick to fall victim to the procedure, following Jordan Zimmermann and Stephen Strasburg.

Solis was a second round draft pick in 2009 out of the University of San Diego. At the time, he was expected to be a quick riser to the big leagues, though his plateau was likely as a No. 3 or 4 starter. He didn’t possess a huge fastball, but threw strikes with four pitches and always had a “bulldog” mentality in college. He was rated by Baseball America as the organization’s sixth-best prospect in their latest evaluations. [Read more...]

The Washington Nationals have agreed to a long-term contract extension with third baseman — and Face of the Franchise — Ryan Zimmerman, ensuring that the fan-favorite will remain in D.C. through at least 2019.

The agreement, which includes a full no-trade clause and post-playing personal services contract, is a six-year deal worth $100 million, with a club option for 2020 worth $24 million. The contract extends Zimmerman until he is 35 years old.
