2) INFO SESSION AT UCSB: SEA - off-campus study focused on marine
science, maritime culture, and environmental studies. Monday, February 1,
at 3pm in Bren Hall 4016

The president of the Sea Education Association, John Bullard, is visiting
UCSB to speak about SEA Semester, an extraordinary off-campus experience
for students of all majors. You are invited to attend an information
session with him on Monday, February 1, at 3pm in Bren Hall 4016.

Students who participate in SEA Semester programs seek a unique and
challenging academic adventure for their off-campus study experience. They
step out of the traditional classroom and actively experience the ocean in
Woods Hole, a global center for ocean studies, and by sailing aboard one of
SEA Semester's sailing research vessels. SEA students earn up to 17
semester credits and sail thousands of miles through the Atlantic, Pacific,
or Caribbean while researching the marine environment.

Students come away from a SEA Semester having experienced many aspects of
the ocean first hand, from the science of ocean circulation to the beauty
of a sunrise over the open sea. There is truly no better way to learn about
your world!

To learn more, visit the SEA website http://www.sea.edu or contact Janice
Lewis in the SEA Admissions Office: jlewis at sea.edu, 800-552-3633 x770.

5) FUN/EDUCATIONAL LOCAL EVENT: Young Tree Care Workshop on February 6,
2010

Keep your trees healthy with proper pruning techniques taught by
experienced professionals in a low-cost public workshop. Goleta Valley
Beautiful, California ReLeaf and The Central Coast Region of the California
Urban Forest Council are among the co-sponsors of a Citizen Pruner Workshop
on Saturday February 6th from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM at the Goleta Union School
District Board Room, 401 N. Fairview Avenue in Goleta, across from the
Goleta Public Library.

The workshop is open to anyone who is interested in the planting and
maintenance of trees in urban landscapes. The workshop will be taught in
an easy to follow format by local and state experts in tree care. Members
of the public, whether novices or those who have some experience at tree
care will benefit, as well as more experienced tree care professionals
looking for a refresher. Five continuing education units are available for
professionals. Pruning public shade trees will be emphasized, with limited
fruit tree pruning discussion.

Workshop leaders Brian Kempf, Bill Speiwak, Dougal House Jr., Bill Millar,
Mark Broomfield and Ken Knight will demonstrate techniques that
professionals use to care for young public trees. Participants will get
actual experience in pruning young trees on the San Marcos High School
campus, with all work being done from the ground and no tree climbing
involved. A short open book exam and field practice at the end will
demonstrate proficiency and ability to assist in future public young tree
pruning projects in your area. There will be ample opportunities to discuss
your specific questions with the speakers.

The workshop is $10 (lunch included) if you register in advance or $20 at
the door. Registration forms are available by visiting the GVB website:
www.goletavalleybeautiful.org. For more information call 685-7910. The

Tuesday: 5:00pm - Buchanan 1910 - Open to Everyone!

ENV S 190 Lectures are open to any UCSB student and community member. You
do not have to be registered in the ENV S 190 course to attend!

The talks will showcase UCSB's own Environmental Studies alumni who will
discuss what they currently do for a living/career, the industry they work
within, the path they took to get to where they are today, and offer advice
as to what students can do to best prepare for an environmental career

Ms. BRIDGET LEWIN holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Environmental Studies
from UCSB, a single (life science) teaching credential, and a Master in
Education (instruction and the Use of Technology in Education ) from UCSB.
She has worked as a K-12 science teacher, as a environmental and science
consultant to non-profit organizations such as Ocean Futures Society,
Wharton Foundation, and a number of local elementary and high schools, and
as a trainer of science teachers through lecturer positions with both the
Environmental Studies Program and the Gevirtz School of Education. She is a
member of the National Science Teachers Association, former member of the
Steering Committee for the CA Regional Environmental Education Coordinators
Network (CREEC) and recently joined Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots program
as a environmental education specialist visiting a wide variety of outreach
environmental education programs within Africa. She also teaches UCSB ENVS
127, Concept in Environmental Education, to be offered this Spring.

LAURA BRANDS, EDUCATION ASSOCIATE/NATURALIST
Laura first fell in love with water on a trip to the Everglades, immersed
in the most crystal clear water she?d ever known. With a taste for the
far-flung and unique, at twenty Laura headed to Madagascar for studies in
coral reef conservation. Her studies continued in Environmental Studies at
the University of California, Santa Barbara, including French language
studies. As a naturalist for Ocean Futures Society since 2000, Laura
thrived at teaching tropical marine ecology in the South Pacific onboard
cruise ships. Other ship-based naturalist work took her to the icy waters
of the North Pacific and Cape Horn, into the turquoise Mediterranean and
Caribbean. Ocean fish species, seabirds, and their conservation became her
specialty. Now at Ocean Futures? headquarters in Santa Barbara, Laura works
as expedition researcher and educator at El Capitan Canyon--one of Ocean
Futures? outdoor education programs.

This lecture series is part of the ES Program's 40th Anniversary
Celebration, and ALL LECTURES are open to all UCSB students and the general
public.

3) UCSB MOVIE SHOWING: ?End of the Line? showing Wednesday, February 10
at 7:30pm in IV2 $3 by A.S. Coastal Fund

Imagine an ocean without fish. Imagine your meals without seafood. Imagine
the global consequences. This is the future if we do not stop, think and
act. In the film we see firsthand the effects of our global love affair
with fish as food.

Filmed over two years, The End of the Line follows the investigative
reporter Charles Clover as he confronts politicians and celebrity
restaurateurs, who exhibit little regard for the damage they are doing to
the oceans.

It examines the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by
increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in
huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future
world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation.

8) UCLA SUMMER ABROAD: Thailand: Sustainable Communities and Ecosystems
June 18 ? July 19

This interdisciplinary program on Sustainable Communities and Ecosystems in
rural coastal Thailand, as part of UCLA's Summer Sessions The program, a
component of the Environmental Science Department and UCLA's Institute of
the Environment, integrates international development research methods
[PRAs and Gender Analysis] and an environmental science course this year.?
We will be doing field work in communities of displaced peoples, focusing
much on addressing social needs resulting from natural disasters, climate
change, and associated policies.? The two primary communities we will work
in came together after the 2004 Christmas Tsunami.?

The first segment is in Bangkok, Thailand's cultural and political capital,
and Southeast Asia's center for international development agencies (i.e.-
USAID, IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), and World
Wildlife Fund (WWF). We will meet relevant officials, green social
entrepreneurs, and nonprofit organizations engaged in sustainability and
climate change issues, and initiate our group research process.? The next
three plus weeks of the program emphasize fieldwork in the North Andaman
Region, just north of Phuket Island. Your capstone activity is a mentored
community-based team research project analyzing social, environmental, and
ecological dimensions of a local sustainability issue.

9) APPLY: 2010 the Rocky Mountain Field Institute will select 10
undergraduate students to participate in its Earth Corps program.

Earth Corps is a highly selective and demanding environmental edcucation
and service course started in 2002 by the Rocky Mountain Field Institute.?
It has a two-fold purpose: first, to provide an exceptional experiential
education opportunity centered around understanding sensitive ecosystems
and the challenges faced in sustainably managing them; and second, to
enable RMFI to complete critical restoration projects in difficult and
demanding environments.? The result is a unique hands-on, field-based
course, integrating a curriculum of land management policy and wilderness
ecology with on-the-ground service work.? The program includes lectures
from top-level experts in the fields of geography, environmental studies,
and biology, as well as industry professionals.? Through student-led
discussions, RMFI puts strong emphasis on developing critical thinking
skills. Reading assignments, individual research reports, and a final
examination complete the curriculum.? This program strives to take
advantage of the tremendous educational opportunities that spending 30 days
in the backcountry presents.?

It is run in partnership with the University of Colorado at Colorado
Springs and students receive 4 credit hours upon completion of the program
(GES 446: Field Studies in Geography).? The program is open to
undergraduate students from colleges and universities throughout the U.S.

1) ES PROGRAM'S Waitlist Policy for full courses

Due to limited enrollment capacity in all ES courses many are reaching
maximum enrollment on GOLD. If this occurs to one of more courses you are
hoping to take please keep checking GOLD for spots that may open when a
student drops out and thus vacates a space.

If the course is noted as "CLOSED" on GOLD then students will not be able
to add the course even if space is available on GOLD. If the course is
closed and you wish to take this class you must add yourself to the course
waitlist to be considered for a course approval code. All ES Program
courses waitlists are online at http://waitlist.ucsb.edu under ENVST.

The course instructor will prioritize who gets approval codes based on
prerequisites, class standing and student justification and interest.
Selected students will be notified of their acceptance for an approval code
during the first week of classes.

NOTE: Even if you are on the waitlist you MUST ATTEND the first day of
instruction. If you do not attend the first lecture you will automatically
loose all seniority for an add code. SO BE SURE TO ATTEND THE FIRST DAY OF
CLASS!

Please do not contact the course instructor for approval codes as they will
not consider issuing codes till the first week of class.

The ES Program policy on adding/crashing courses can be found on our
website at: http://www.es.ucsb.edu/curriculum_info/add_es_courses.php

2) NEW ES COURSE FOR SPRING: ENV S 193HR: "THE POLITICS OF SCIENCE"

This course will explore the role of science in modern democratic
societies. Contrary to popular belief, science is now "and always has
been" a political endeavor. Over the next ten weeks, we will explore key
concepts and case studies related to the production and use of scientific
knowledge, in the United States and beyond. We will focus our studies on
the areas of environment and human health. And we will consider the role
of science in public policy. By the end of the quarter, we will have
answered a series of crucial questions:

Why do reasonable people disagree when presented with the same
scientific evidence? Can science resolve cultural and political
debates? Who produces knowledge and who consumes it? Why do
arguments about scientific theories persist despite overwhelming
evidence? Does the truth speak for itself, or do ?facts? mean
different things to different people? Is knowledge really power? If so,
how have people used that power to exert their will over others? Is science
the solution to environmental and health problems, or is it the cause?
What roles do scientists play in policy-making? What roles should they
play? How is science governed in the United States and abroad? And can we
envision a society in which science serves a more productive role in
promoting social welfare and democratic decision-making?

As you will see, science offers modern democratic societies with
tremendous opportunities and great challenges. The goals of this
course will be for you to develop an understanding these opportunities and
challenges, and to provide the tools that will allow you to better
understand historical and contemporary scientific debates?from evolution to
pollution, from carbon emissions to cancer clusters, and from the air we
breath to the food we eat.

11) You are invited - Upcoming Northern and Southern CA 2010 Dockwalker
Trainings

The California Department of Boating and Waterways and the California
Coastal Commission's Boating Clean & Green Program in partnership with the
Keep the Delta Clean Program, the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation,
the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the US Power Squadrons and many more
organizations will conduct more Dockwalker trainings this year.

Dockwalkers will be trained to engage members of the public and the boating
community in adopting clean boating practices. Once training is complete,
these volunteers don their official "Dockwalker" hats. Dockwalkers share
clean boating information with boaters and distribute educational materials
(boater kits) while visiting marinas, launch ramps, marine supply stores,
boat shows and special events (regattas, opening days, among others). As
you realize, "Dockwalker" is only a generic term because you do not
necessarily have to "walk the docks" in order to talk to boaters about
safety and clean boating practices. Your club members will have tons of
opportunities to share clean boating information with other boaters at
regattas, opening days, club presentations, among others. Remember safety
and the environment go hand in hand.

Training is FREE and Dockwalking is a fantastic way to interact with
boaters to help keep California's marinas, waterways, and ocean clean and
healthy. The training provides an overview of environmentally-sound boating
practices, information about how to conduct Dockwalking, and educational
materials that Dockwalkers will distribute including the 2010 boater kits (
http://www.coastal.ca.gov/ccbn/images/Boaterkit_08.jpg ). These boater
kits include: Reusable Canvas Tote-bag; A Boater's Guide to Keeping
Pollutants Out of the Water; 2010 Tidebooks; Oil Absorbent Pillow to
capture oil leaks and drips in the boat bilge; a variety of informative
Clean and Safe Boating Resources including the new publication produced by
the Boating Clean and Green program, the "Environmental Boating Laws Every
Recreational Boater Should Know," the ABC's of Boating Law, among others.
Depending on your region, we may also provide the Delta Clean Boating map,
the San Francisco Bay Area Clean Boating Map and the new edition of the
Southern California Boater's Guide.

2) UCSB GRADING OPTION DEADLINE AND CLARIFICATION: Winter quarter
grading option deadline is this Friday! Read here to learn about 4
IMPORTANT questions/issues regarding taking courses P/NP.

The following is a description of the grading options for students majoring
in Environmental Studies or Hydrology. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY to avoid
future mistakes that might hinder your progress towards meeting graduation
requirements.

(ISSUE #1): NO COURSES TAKEN FOR YOUR MAJOR can be taken as P/NP!

No preparation for the major (lower-division), upper-division ES courses
(Area A & B), or Outside Concentration (Area C) course can be taken for
P/NP, with two exceptions: ES 190 and ES 192, which are only offered P/NP.

(ISSUE #2): You DO NOT HAVE TO achieve a grade of at least a "C" for
courses to apply towards your ES/HYDRO major!

That's right, all ES and Hydro majors follow the standard university rules
and may get a grade as low of "D-" and the course will still satisfy/apply
towards your major requirements (Note: some other departments and majors on
campus might have standards/pre-major GPA requirements that would require
passing courses with a higher grade than "D-.").

BEWARE: In some departments, such as Mathematics and Chemistry, specific
lower-division course sequences require a minimum grade in the preceding
course in order to enroll in the next course in the sequence. For example,
all students must obtain a grade of "C" or better in Math 3A or 34A in
order to move on to the next course. Although this is not a rule imposed by
the ES Program, it is one our students must follow if they are to satisfy
the mathrequirement for the major.

(ISSUE #3): THERE ARE THREE GPA REQUIREMENTS that all UCSB and ES/Hydro
majors must satisfy in order to graduate! They are:

a) OVERALL UCSB GPA: Overall cumulative GPA for all courses taken at UCSB
must be 2.0 or higher.

b) OVERALL IN THE MAJOR GPA: Overall cumulative GPA for all courses taken
for your major, both lower-division preparation and upper-division courses
(Areas A, B, & C) must be 2.0 or higher at time of graduation.

c) UPPER-DIVISION IN MAJOR: The cumulative GPA for all Upper-division
courses taken for your major (Areas A, B, & C) must be 2.0 or higher.

Hence, a grade as low as a "D-" will satisfy any major course requirement
as long as you make sure your cumulative GPA for rules 1 through 3
mentioned above, stay above a 2.0.

(ISSUE #4): How many courses can be taken for P/NP at UCSB?

Technically, up to 1/3 of your units taken at UCSB can be under the P/NP
grading option. However, since both ES majors and the Hydro majors require
such a large number of units (all of which must be taken letter grade), the
typical ES student takes a relatively small number P/NP than the maximum
allowed. Plus, if you take a course P/NP and get a grade of C-, you get NO
CREDIT for that course. So, be sure you can achieve at least a "C" if you
take a course P/NP (for a GE or non major course) and need it to graduate.

**************************************************************************
3) CALPIRG will be holding a forum on affordable education in Campbell
Hall on Monday February 22nd from 4-6pm.

The event is free to attend and will include speakers:
Gubernatorial Candidate: Ken Miller
President of the Santa Barbara Board of Education: Ed Heron
Art History Professor: Robert Williams
Principal of Foot Hill Elementary: Craig Richter
CALPIRG Campus Program Director: Saffron Zomer
Union Representative from UPTE: Elizabeth Wilks
Student Representative: Armando Carmona

The event is designed to inform students, faculty , and community members
about the negative effects of the under funding of education and how we as
citizens can get involved in creating positive change.

I am asking each of you to please make a short announcement about our event
in your class on Monday (if you have them)

I do apologize for the late notice, but I want this event to be known to
all students and faculty on campus so that we will turn out and show our
support for this issue.

I've attached a flier with all pertinent information regarding the event,
and if you have any questions please feel free to email me.

Thanks for your time and consideration!

Solutions to Climate, Oil, and Proliferation"
March 5, 2010 - 2:00pm - FREE
Corwin Pavilion, University Center, UCSB?

Amory Lovins: Cofounder, Chairman, and Chief Scientist
Rocky Mountain Institute

March 5, 2010 | 2:00pm | FREE
Corwin Pavilion, University Center, UCSB?

Amory Lovins is widely considered among the world?s leading authorities on
energy?especially its efficient use and sustainable supply?and a fertile
innovator in integrative design. As Chairman and Chief Scientist of the
Rocky Mountain Institute, Lovins pioneered the concept of ?soft energy
paths? involving efficient energy use, diverse and renewable energy
sources, and special reliance on ?soft energy technologies? based on solar,
wind, biofuels, geothermal, etc., matched in scale and quality to their
task, and widely accessible across society.

Built on 27 years of innovation, ?Reinventing Fire? is the Rocky Mountain
Institute?s most ambitious project to date. ?Reinventing Fire? aims to
create a clear and practical vision of a fossil-fuel-free future for the
United States, backed up by quantitative analysis, and to map a pathway to
achieve that future, led largely by business. This vision and pathway will
offer a message of hope, put the spotlight on leaders, catalyze others to
act, and inform and help to catalyze innovative policies.
In his lecture, Amory Lovins will demonstrate how ?Reinventing Fire? can
change minds and clarify choices by showing what exists, what works, what
makes sense and makes money, and what can change the world.

ATTENTION ES PROGRAM ALUMNI: The deadline to complete the ES 2010 Alumni
Survey is: Sunday, FEb 28th, 2010!
http://www.surveymethods.com/EndUser.aspx?CAEE8290C88E9E9B
**************************************************************************

Dear ES Alumni,

If you are reading this and have not yet done your 2010 ES Alumni Survey,
PLEASE consider doing so in the next few days. I know you are busy, but
the turnout has been low so far and we really would like to get a good
sample covering our 40 years of ES graduates. The information we gather
creates an invaluable resource that helps improve ES and justify to
aspiring ES majors that there are plenty of career opportunities awaiting a
ES graduate.

We are asking ALL ES ALUMNI to fill it out, regardless if you did one in
2005, are not currently employed in an "environmental" career, or are
retired or unemployed at the moment. The survey is designed to collect a
variety of information and every bit helps (i.e. graduate school info, both
current and past employment history, and your thoughts about how ES may
improve).

So try to find 15 to 20 minutes this weekend to fill out the online survey.
All you need to do is vist this weblink:
http://www.surveymethods.com/EndUser.aspx?CAEE8290C88E9E9B

If you get this email after the deadline we are happy to extend to you a
grace period to fill it out. Just get it in as soon as possible.

Be sure to visit the Environmental Studies Program's 40th Anniversary
Celebration website for information about the April 23-25 celebration:
http://www.es.ucsb.edu/40

A registration page should be made available within the week.

Thank you in advance for your participation. If you have any questions do
not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Eric Zimmerman, ES Program Staff and Fellow ES Alumnus
