One of the great textile traditions of the world, the magnificent Saltillo Sarapes of Mexico have been a symbol of wealth, prestige and rugged individualism for over 250 years. In the second half of the 19th century, beginning with the reign of Mexican Emperor Maximilian, the Saltillo enjoyed a final flowering of artistic achievement. Drawn from private collections, this is the first exhibition to examine the post-Classic era of these amazing garments.

In conjunction with this exhibition, we are pleased to announce the publication of a comprehensive book on the subject featuring essays by Mark Winter and Thomas McCormick. Winter is the foremost authority on Saltillo Sarapes and McCormick has collected these textiles for 35 years. The book, with 112 pages featuring over 100 color illustrations, is available through the gallery or by visiting www.saltillosarape.com

I have a deep and long-standing captivation with metaphysical and pragmatic concerns regarding our universe. My current research focuses on natural phenomena, the earth’s ecosystem as a whole, and our role within that. This in turn has driven me to incorporate ever more sustainable practices in my studio, in my life, and when possible actively engaging the public on the matter. In this body of work, painstaking painting methods are coaxed into interacting and amalgamating over durations of up to several months. The result is complex, luminous, mysterious paintings that strike a beautiful balance between controlled and organic processes.

The mine(d) museum is a gathering of recent studio activity. The work continues previous interests in urban space, history, and cultural forces. Recent gestures add a turn toward the body and mental places. The show contains numerous portrait forms, which concern themselves with psychic states and playful cover-up. Several of the plaster sculptures actually cover toys. The radial sculptures, with projecting nerves, are the brain studies. Invisibles Systems, is the largest shelving unit, which holds about 30 small sculptural structures. The forms mimic cellular movement and are arranged to appear like a developing language.

Playful forms are mixed with dark matter and heavier material. Functioning like a skin, surface materials hold, or pretend to hold, the liquid center. There is a pressure building inside, like a carbonated beverage, this head could pop! The air must be released slowly. And the artist has concerned himself with air, his own, and that of others. “Airheads” are the personalities among us who take flight, often disengaged, or not so connected to the expected. Sometimes they are the dummies. Sometimes they are the inflated personalities with all the answers leading us all astray. We all participate in the air show. Take a deep breath.

Who are we anyway? Let’s begin the brain studies. (So many directions to pursue, so little funding for the work. Mistakes will be made). The brain starts in the sky, above the clouds where it’s dark. Well, probably not. More accurate might be a start in the sea, with the fish, with a tail or a fin, and gill slits, surrounded by liquid and bubbles. The morphology toward the ape is complex and mysterious. The systems appear invisible. The language is symbolic.

Lynne Mapp Drexler was born in Newport News, Virginia in 1928. In the late 1950s, after attending the College of William and Mary in Virginia, she immersed herself in Abstract Expressionism, studying with Hans Hofmann in both his New York and Provincetown schools. From there she went on to graduate study at Hunter College in New York City with Robert Motherwell. In the 1950s that she set her foundation—a synthesis of Post-Impressionist landscape painting and post-war painterly abstraction. The results are something not familiar to most students of the period and her crisp, colorful brushwork allows the artist to sing with a completely original voice. Drexler lived the last 16 years of her life on Monhegan Island with her husband, the painter John Hultberg, she passed away in 1999.

Drexler exhibited extensively throughout her life at venues such as Tanager Gallery, Esther Robles Gallery and Westerly Gallery. She is slated for upcoming shows at the Monhegan Museum and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. Her work is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Monhegan Museum, Farnsworth Museum, Brooklyn Museum and the Queens Museum among others.
