Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Internet marketing has grown exponentially since it’s inception in 1994, as more and more people around the world start an online business either to earn some extra cash or to become work-at-home entrepreneurs to escape the rigors, stress and limitations of corporate existence.

And as 2009 dawns, the prospects for making money online through Internet marketing have never been brighter. While much of the offline world languishes through the Great Recession, those doing business online will still see growth this year with more people making money online through Internet marketing than ever before!

In terms of starting a business online, your first choice has to be what area of Internet marketing you want to begin with. For all intents and purposes, their are three different main categories to consider…

The easiest, and usually quickest way to start making money online is Affiliate marketing. This is usually the first step for Internet marketing since you don’t need your own products, can get started with a very low investment, and can often start bringing in the first profits in a relatively short time. To start affiliate marketing, a blog, an autoresponder and a method to collect opt-in subscribers is usually all that’s required at first.

Next up is mainstream Internet marketing, which is best described as teaching people to market online, and selling them the tools and resources to accomplish this. But be warned – this is probably the most competitive area of doing business online, and you’re competing directly with people who are expert marketers both online and offline.

Starting an Internet marketing business requires expertise – either your own or some purchased – such as products with resell rights or materials you outsource (have ghostwritten for you). And again, you’ll need a blog, an autoresponder to send out your e-zine and e-courses, and at least one, though probably many, websites.

The third option, Niche marketing, is usually the next step for those starting out with affiliate marketing, but you can choose to start off with it too. Niche marketing refers to specializing in products – tangible goods or digital downloads – that appeal to people in one specific niche, or area of interest. Popular niches to market to include travel, pets, health & fitness, kids, music, sports, etc.

If you have a hobby or passtime you love, chances are you’ll stay more interested and motivated with your niche marketing than if you pick a field you know little about or have no great interest in. Again you can create or purchase your products to sell online, and the main tools to start out with are the same – your blog and autoresponder, plus a site or salespage and lead-capture pages.

Take a bit of time to research each of the three areas, then decide on your initial area of focus and jump right in. There are a great number of us earning a comfortable living online through Internet marketing, and our ranks are growing daily… Shouldn’t YOU be pursuing your dreams and working toward YOUR dream lifestyle too?
Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

It’s that time of year again, time to make New Year Resolutions that you won’t keep! Ever thought about why they’re so difficult to stick to? Why do you run out of steam, and usually give up by the end of February? Follow this new version of achieving your New Year’s Resolutions, and be the picture of success by this time next year!

1. Last Year: You had unrealistic expectations.

This Year: Instead of choosing four or five resolutions, pick one or two that you can focus on. Make them something you really want to change, not something that you feel outside pressure (by loved ones or society) to change.

Don’t decide to start exercising because your sister-in-law commented on your flabby arms. If you don’t truly want it for yourself, you won’t be able to take the actions needed.

FYI -an effective little secret that many people are finding out about is that training in the martial arts develops in you more self-discipline, focus, and confidence – the tools necessary to achieve your goals. First thing, find a local Karate/Kickboxing school and begin classes. A good Academy will focus on goals and accomplishment.

2. Last Year: You were unprepared.

This Year: Understand the amount of time and effort that you have to put into changing. Know that there will be setbacks, so don’t be too hard on yourself when they happen. Forgive yourself and immediately take steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again. If you’re changing your eating habits, don’t keep cookies in the house! Prepare you life for success, not failure.

3. Last Year: You had a loosely defined or unrealistic goal.

This Year: Pick a goal. Write it down on a piece of paper, in great detail, but be realistic. Don’t write “to lose 20 lbs by Valentines Day”. Do write “to weigh _____lbs by 5pm on April 7th, 2009 to be achieved by eating more fruit and vegetables and joining a martial arts and kickboxing school so I can get a good workout three times a week”.

Then create a goal schedule. Decide what you want to have achieved by the midpoint, the quarter point, monthly and then weekly. Again, make it realistic for you. You want to challenge yourself, but not set goals so high that you get frustrated and give up when you don’t immediately see results. Once you have your goal schedule, write down the actions that you need to take to achieve each mini-goal and keep you on track.

You’ll only succeed once you have your main supporter (YOU!) behind you, so get rid of your negative thinking. And just do it! Follow your plan. Give it 100% of your effort and ability, 99% of the time, and you’ll succeed.

Trust your intuition, follow your dreams, and set your goals high!
Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Corporate identity is the reflection of the whole organization. It shows the caliber of your company to the clients in an aim to earn their trust and patronage. Positive corporate identity is very essential to the success of the company.

What really is Corporate Identity?

The company’s corporate identity is the sum of everything in it. “What the company does” “its manner of doing” and other ‘factors’ determine corporate identity. Every business institution has its own identity. In short it is something that separates the company from other companies.

To be successful, a company needs to cultivate its own corporate identity so that they can leave a lasting positive impression on the customers and other investors to ensure its success.

Corporate identity can be a character envisioned by the company which can be attained through careful planning, structuring and implementation. An organization that engineers its own identity knows the importance of a positive image to attract customers and investors.

Company Logos:

Having a company logo is one of the most effective ways of establishing corporate identity. Of course the logo should be in relation with what the company is all about.

A computer learning institute should have a logo representing computers, such as monitors, CPUs, keyboard etc. Shipping companies often add horizontal lines to their logo signifying speed. Music stores usually have logo with musical instruments in it.

Company Logos are graphical representations used to advertise your service. It should be easy to be seen and understood. Be original, since logos represent your company it is not advisable to create a logo based on other company logos.

Implementing Corporate Identity:

To be successful in building a company identity, a company must implement the identity throughout the organization. The company must set standards, maybe a list of values and policies to transform the corporation into the company they envisioned.

For example a hotel wants to be known for excellence in service and hospitality. The hotel should invest in the meticulous screening of the staffs as well as the training. Staffs should be trained both in skills and attitude to provide the quality of service the hotel wants to achieve.

Consistency in the projection of corporate identity
When a company decides to strongly establish its own identity, it must be consistent in every aspect. Consistency plays an important role as it would tell clients that the company can deliver their service with the same quality every time.

For example: a pizza restaurant presents its name with the tagline “always on time”.

Of course the company will live up to that tagline as their customers would expect that from them. It is a gamble: Comply and satisfy the customers, and you will gain their support and patronage; if not you will earn a bad reputation.

The pizza company should strictly implement the “Always on time” tag line to their delivery parameter.

Companies who implement a well planned and consistent identity program will have an edge over others who do not. It is like building a good impression on clients, once you have established a certain kind of trust all you have to do is maintain it.
Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Are you guilty of filling your day with profit-depleting activities? You know the ones I’m talking about: Filing. Checking emails every few minutes. Checking web stats. Chatting with a friend. Attending networking events that don’t connect you with your target audience. Forwarding emails that were forwarded to you. Surfing the web aimlessly.

If you are the owner of a business and you wonder why you aren’t making more money, start thinking about all the activities you do every day — can you identify your Profit-Building activities vs your Profit-Depleting activities?

If you are very clear about where you see your business in the next 18 months, it’s easier to stay focused on Profit-Building activities. Why? Because you make sure that every activity you engage in answers this critical question: Will this activity help me get me to where I want to be in 18 months? If the answer is NO, you may elect to stop doing that activity or relegate that activity to evening hours or weekend hours.

Profit-Building activities are those activities that 1) keep you connected to your target audience 2) provide immediate or long-term value to your existing customers and 3) drive money to your bottom line.

Think about how you can add Profit-Building activities to your schedule and reduce those activities that aren’t letting you focus on following the money!

Here’s a quick and effective exercise that will help you identify those Profit-Building activities. Take a blank piece of paper. Draw a line down the middle. In the left hand column, jot down everything you do in a day as it relates to your business. Do this for 5 days.

At the end of the week, in the right hand column, put a PB (Profit-Building) next to everything you did in that 5 days that kept you focused on these three things: 1) kept you connected to your target audience 2) provided immediate or long-term value to your existing customers and 3) drove money to your bottom line.

Once you have identified all the PB activities, go through and identify all the PD (Profit-Depleting) activities. The goal: having more PBs than PDs!

All of us are guilty of PD activities. They happen. I find that business owners, however, who aren’t consciously thinking about activities that will make them money, can fall into patterns where their PD activities consume their days adding frustration and a sense of burn-out because their business isn’t growing.

You owe it to your business to ferret out Profit-Depleting activities and find more time for Profit-Building activities. Staying focused on activities that bring in money will serve you well and ultimately help you reach your financial goals quicker!

And if you’d like to discover other ways to improve your company’s bottom line and proactively manage your growth, visit and get ahead of
your own growth curve.

 Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Believe it or not, the power of writing articles can actually help your business grow even during an economic slump. Advertising on newspapers and television are really effective ways to reach a wide range people. However, such promotional media can be very expensive. In a time when there is a financial crunch, you would naturally want to look for other advertising alternatives that are equally effective but not as expensive. And thanks to the Internet, you get what you wish for. The World Wide Web is a good venue for businesses to promote their goods to the people who matter most, their customers.

Let me tell you how the power of writing articles can help your business. First, you can promote your business by submitting articles on your blog site. Nowadays, people use the Internet to seek information and if you provide Net users with articles that are informative, accurate, and useful they will surely consider what you have to say. You can use articles by subtly promoting your services, products or businesses. There are also a lot of article directories where you can post your articles. If you are asking why you need to invest time and money marketing online, the answer is simple. According to statistics, the number of Internet users in the United Kingdom increased by 171.5% from 2000 to 2008. In fact, 68.6% of the total population in the UK is now using the Internet. These figures are expected to increase exponentially in the future as more and more households in the country are buying computers, laptops and other similar devices.

In order to maximise the power of writing articles for Internet marketing, you may also want to try other online advertising alternatives. Participating in forums, providing online newsletters, creating a profile in several social networking sites, and linking with various directories are some of the ways you can promote your products and services on the Internet. If you want to earn extra income on the side, you may be interested in affiliate marketing and pay-per-click schemes.

You really do not have to be a proficient writer to reap the benefits of the power of writing articles. There are many people on the Internet who are willing to help out with your article writing. If you do not know how to go about with Internet marketing, you can also seek the help of virtual assistants who know how to write, upload blogs, and participate in forums.
Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Internet marketing experts are thriving today as never before; more people are making money online than at any time in the 14 years the World Wide Web, and Internet marketing, has existed. But those considering starting a business online may not realize that Internet marketing is still viable during the current world-wide financial meltdown.

The global recession is an accepted fact – right now every major economy in the world is suffering a recession, as defined by two consecutive quarters of negative growth. Worldwide, media outlets scream their headlines of the latest layoffs, foreclosures, bankruptcies, bailouts, devastated retirement savings, repossessions and the like.

On a personal level, every intelligent, caring human hates it – the pain, suffering and stress it generates, and the jump in hunger, homelessness and true poverty that results in more and more instances.

Offline businesses hate it too. In the business-to-business realm, keeping your own business afloat, supporting your share prices and maintaining a positive cashflow are just the start of it – but what about your customers and suppliers? As businesses slash their expenditures, customer lists are shrinking and average order value is plummeting.

And ‘Just-In-Time’ supply systems, the darling of the 80’s and 90’s with it’s reduced inventories, has become a major headache. With no existing inventory to fall back on, corporations are finding it necessary to prop up their suppliers or face a lack of product while they search for new sources.

Business-to-Consumer business is just as bad, if not worse. Millions of jobs have evaporated in the past year alone, taking those salaries with them. Falling home values in the US and UK, for example, have dried up many equity lines of credit, and the general credit squeeze is making it even tougher to ride out the storm on credit. Credit card companies are lowering limits and/or raising the interest rates for those already struggling, exacerbating the situation even more.

And even families with no job losses or income reduction are realizing that savings are at all-time lows while household debt is reaching record heights. So again spending is curtailed in an attempt to pay down debt and rebuild a financial cushion against the unexpected.

Yet Internet marketing and its subsets – affiliate marketing and niche marketing – continue to thrive and even boom during it all. If you’ve been considering getting into Internet marketing but have hesitated because of the recession, it’s time for a major reframe of your viewpoint…

Let’s start with the headspace of people using the Internet in general. In tough economic times people don’t head out to the mall as often – because the mall is a place to shop and spend money. But the main reason people go online is for information, so that psychological barrier isn’t there. While they’re still willing to spend SOME money, they just aren’t heading out LOOKING to spend it.

Second, no market is expanding, or has ever expanded, at the pace the Internet community is growing today. Every single day tens or hundreds of thousands of new people come online, and some will be potential buyers for any online business. Even if Internet marketing had reached market saturation, new blood would provide a new potential market every single day.

But the truth is, Internet marketing is nowhere near market saturation – not by a long shot. Think of the number of stores in the offline world. Not in your locale, your city, your state or even your country – but in the WORLD. Obviously, the number dwarfs current Internet marketing ventures. Even the biggest Internet marketing opt-in e-mail lists have just millions of subscribers out of the billions of Internet users – and most Internet marketers have lists of less than 50,000.

But even if the market wasn’t growing, sales and profits would still be climbing fast due to higher conversions through new tools and techniques. Like Internet marketing itself, the World Wide Web is still in it’s infancy – new technologies like audio & video are being developed all over the world. And as older phone company and cable company hardware systems are upgraded, these technologies will advance faster and faster, both in penetration and presentation.

Web 2.0 sites like YouTube, Google Video, FaceBook, MySpace and Squidoo provide easier access to additional users, and services like Technorati, Twitter, MyBlogLog & Pingoat make getting the word out much simpler. And the best of these tools, blogs, have made it easy for anyone to start Internet marketing.

Free blogging software like WordPress and free blog hosting sites like Blogger and WordPress have eliminated the need to invest financially in your startup – a major boost for people at risk from the recession. Using a blog to promote affiliate marketing opportunities removes all financial risk, something that can’t be done in the offline world.

But what of the recession’s effects vis-a-vis Internet marketing? How can all the financial malfeasance and misfortune be good for Internet marketing? Let’s look at each of the three main areas – Internet marketing, Affiliate marketing and Niche marketing…

Mainstream Internet marketers sell products and services that teach people how to make money online. In any economic downturn it’s natural for more people to look for ways to increase their income, top up reduced income or replace the income from a lost job. Additionally, the increased workplace stress leads many to consider getting out from under the tyranny of bosses and the corporate world in general and strike out on their own. Since starting an online biz involves the widest opportunity and lowest financial risk, the Internet is the logical choice for a growing number of people.

Affiliate marketing is booming as well – and no wonder! It’s the online specialization that requires the least technical savvy, the least start-up capital and has the shortest income horizon when done properly. What could be better suited to cash-strapped neophytes who need quicker returns?

But niche marketing is the area of online business most likely to derive the greatest benefits from the recession. Consumers who might otherwise head out to exotic restaurants will stay home and create their own meals – and need good recipes to keep up with their accustomed diversity. More people will opt to do their own home repair, meaning they’ll need instructional e-books and videos, and often printed plans as well.

Kids today will not react well to reduced allowances or fewer new computer games – wise parents will be all over the Internet looking for new activities to keep their kids at bay. And how many backyard mechanics first started working on cars because they couldn’t afford exorbitant mechanic rates? Again, someone needs to explain the practices and procedures to them, especially with today’s highly computerized engines!

And being home more rather than continuing their expensive nights out will leave people with a hole in their timetable they’ll need to fill – whether they fill it with reading books, watching DVDs, playing computer games, finding a new hobby or learning a new language, new opportunities are presented for niche marketers.

So how will YOU spend the extra time you have on your hands during the recession? Watching TV? Playing Computer Games? Spending more than you can afford to? Or making money online and building toward your own independence? Be smart – look into Internet marketing opportunities today!

One thorn of experience is worth a whole wilderness of warning.

–James Russell Lowell

How can you create mental bridges into accelerated success for your colleagues and customers?

In today’s uncertain environment, many people are clutching at straws or seeking answers like the blind trying to imagine an elephant solely by touching one spot on the elephant. You need to help them get past that if they are to be effective.

Here is an example of how I worked on that problem with my colleague, Carol Coles, to learn from how others adapted to past uncertainties to gain more success.

From the author tour for our first book, I learned that finding more ways to help people realize that they already knew about better solutions was going to be critical to the 400 Year Project. By writing another book that outlined more examples of stalls, stallbusting, and creating exponential solutions, I hoped to trigger more awareness of previously observed near-perfect human performances that could be emulated in new solutions.

What should the book’s topic be? I had been struck during my first projects as a consultant by the way that clients were so very impressed when a strategic solution would take advantage of positive trends. Subsequently, I noticed how hard most people tried to get in step with whatever the latest trends were, unless poverty or infirmity made such adjustments impossible.

One source of that preference for aligning with trends was the increasing sense that leaders had less and less influence over their results. It’s hard enough to keep balls in the air as you juggle them. Add strong winds, a powerful earthquake, and loud noise while standing on a tightrope, and juggling becomes much harder.

The traditional response to stronger external influences had been to expect more of leaders: They needed to become ever more agile so that they could quickly twitch themselves and their organizations into favorable orientations with whatever shifts affected their business.

The description of a good leader increasingly sounded like that of Superman: “faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.” I didn’t know any leaders who bore even the slightest resemblance to Superman. What could a mere mortal leader do instead?

I began reading broadly on the subject of how leaders can orient organizations to trends. My eye was caught by a book written by Arie de Geus that argued persuasively for using biological metaphors for companies rather than inanimate ones.

My thinking was further sparked by something he said during a talk about his book at a forum of strategic thinkers: When people have no experience in an area, they draw a blank when they try to think about what to do. Fill in that blank with useful experience, and they will make rapid progress.

Arie noted that working on simulated problems based on scenarios describing a challenging situation was very good for providing relevant experience. This observation was based on Arie’s work at Shell. He had been involved with the famous scenario-based planning in which Shell executives had considered what they might do about an Arab oil embargo before the real thing occurred in the 1970s. Reports suggested that this scenario thinking had helped Shell to adjust more rapidly and effectively than many of its competitors.

Arie kindly agreed to spend a day with Carol and me at his club in London where we grilled him about the management implications of biological metaphors and developing advance experience through scenarios. He informed us that scenario thinking had an unexpected benefit that everyone should pursue: Think about enough scenarios and you begin to see strategies and tactics that will leave you better off regardless of what comes next.

We had previously been focused on finding opportunities that provide upside potential while having little, if any, downside risk. Our most successful clients instinctively looked at opportunities that way. In addition, we had fine-tuned our financial strategy services by helping clients to find actions that had little downside risk, regardless of what came next in the financial markets.

In our first book, we argued in favor of using simulations to make people more effective in dealing with surprise situations. But scenario planning (although it was an area in which we had been active) was not addressed in that book. Carol and I became intrigued with the opportunity to focus our new book on more ways to create mental bridges that allow people to effectively deal with issues outside of their direct control.
Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Any business owner with a retail shop on the high street has probably been praying every night during December 2008 for the much hoped for pre-Christmas rush to the High Street to materialise and translate into sales.

The final weekend before Christmas saw High Street footfall down by 8.7% compared with 2007 and with figures showing a slide of between 10%-15% for year on year figures for the week commencing 15th December, you could argue that this Christmas is on course to be one of the worst ever for Retail Business owners.

These figures are bad news for struggling retailers, many of which are struggling to survive. Retailers whose main products are linked to the housing market are likely to be worst hit and the recession looks set to worsen with the ever increasing rises in unemployment figures taking their toll on job security fears.

For anyone who knows what it is like to start their own business, secure substantial borrowings to be able invest in the inevitable start up costs a retail business needs, stock, rent, rates and shop fittings to name but a few but slowing footfall, a shrinking economy, a falling pound and rising unemployment do not really form part of the ideal business plan.

Despite all these economic factors the internet is clearly bucking this trend and can easily provide a solution to independent retailers who can think outside the box. The answer does not simply lie in having a website designed to sell your shop items online, without a high margin product line it may end up costing you more to advertise than you would gain in revenue. There is also very little knowledge to be found offline about internet marketing and how to use the strategies effectively to make sure your business survives and grows online.

If you are looking to supplement your retail business profits during the recession, you may want to investigate adding a network marketing business to your existing business. We have already seen people such as Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki set the trend by endorsing the business model itself but it makes sense to make use of the skills you already have as a business owner when the market trend is so obviously pointing to a survival of the fittest scenario.

95% of business opportunities and network marketing businesses attract people who have no previous experience in business. They know very little about sales and marketing and the idea of spending money advertising and marketing their business is usually alien and is executed from the mindset of cost rather than from the return on investment that a business owner would know and understand. This provides opportunity for entrepreneurs that remain largely untapped.

If the thought of opening up those shop doors every day fills you with dread, make sure you have considered all the possibilities that are open to you. There is no shortage of footfall on the internet; Forbes Magazine has estimated that around half a million people will be looking to start a home based business every month in the USA alone in the coming years.

Retailers already have the skills set that over 95% of opportunity seekers do not possess this is how an internet business opportunity can help save your retail business whatever the economy predictions are.
