For the third straight season, the Philadelphia Phillies proved to be the best team in the National League East. The reigning world champions beat the Houston Astros 10-3 yesterday to clinch the division crown and let the champagne flow.

The Phillies are attempting to become the first repeat champions since the New York Yankees won three consecutive World Series from 1998-2000. The Cincinnati Reds were the last NL team to win two in a row in 1975-76. The last time the Phillies made the postseason three straight times was from 1976-78, when Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton were dominating the league.

On Wednesday night, Raul Ibanez hit his career-high 34th homer and Jimmy Rollins rapped a double and a triple. Pedro Martinez started the game, but Kyle Kendrick (3-1) got the win after pitching three scoreless innings of relief. Martinez lasted four innings, giving up three runs and six hits in his first start since a neck strain forced him out of a game at Atlanta on September 19. Brad Lidge, who has blown 11 save opportunities after a perfect save season last year, came in to record the last out.

Unlike the last two years, the Phillies didn't waver in pursuit of this division title. They moved into first place for good on May 30 and have spent 136 days atop the East Division standings. During the celebration, the Phillies went to the outfield wall and poured champagne on the sign that honors late broadcaster Harry Kalas. The Frick Award-winning announcer (Frick winners are commonly but erroneously said to be "Hall of Famers") died in April after almost 40 years on the air in the City of Brotherly Love.
Brad Penny pitched his first complete game in four seasons to lead the Giants past the Diamondbacks. Penny gave up six hits while recording five strikeouts and allowing one free pass to remain perfect at home (4-1 overall) since being traded to San Francisco, which was eliminated from postseason consideration when Colorado won. Eli Whiteside homered to lead the San Fran offense.
Ken Griffey Jr. bashed a three-run homer, the 629th in "Junior's" long career, to lead the Mariners to a 7-0 win over the Athletics. On the mound, Brandon Morrow allowed just one hit in eight innings and set a career high for strikeouts with nine. Griffey's long ball came off 24-year-old right-hander Clayton Mortensen, who became the 407th pitcher Griffey has homered against in his career. Mortensen allowed eight hits and six runs in his solitary inning of work.
ANGELS 5, Rangers 0 Angels On Pace to Break Team Offensive Mark
Matt Palmer combined with four relievers on to toss a one-hitter as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of Orange County of California tied a club record for most runs in a season with their 5-0 victory over Texas. Palmer allowed a leadoff single in the first inning to Julio Borbon as he improved to 11-2 and lowered his ERA to an even 4.00. Darren Oliver, Jose Arredondo, Kevin Jepsen, and Rafael Rodriguez finished the game with hitless relief. Gary Matthews Jr. slapped an RBI double in the seventh and Terry Evans capped the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth. The 866 runs the Angels have tallied this season equal their 1979 output, when they won their first division title.
PADRES 5, Dodgers 0 Not Yet...
The Dodgers still haven't clinched the NL West Division title. Clayton Richard stopped them from clinching on Wednesday, throwing seven strong innings and allowing just one hit to lead the Padres to a shutout victory on Wednesday night. The Dodgers tied their season high with their fourth straight loss, failing once again to secure the West title in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1977-78. Big Blue has already clinched an October berth but is now just 2.5 games ahead of Colorado in the division.

ROCKIES 10, Brewers 6 Rox Pound Them Out
The Rockies went on a power surge and it left them one win away from clinching a 2009 postseason spot. Todd Helton, Carlos Gonzalez, and Troy Tulowitzki each slammed a two-run homer as the Rockies beat the Brewers, 10-6. Colorado now holds a safe four-game lead over Atlanta in the NL Wild Card race with four to play, allowing them to clinch with their next victory. The Rockies are surprisingly also only 2.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West race after another Los Angeles defeat.

Pirates 8, CUBS 2 (game 2) Not Zo Good
Jeff Karstens was the second Pittsburgh starter to out-pitch a Cubs ace on Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings to beat Carlos Zambrano. "Big Z" was coming off a two-hit shutout in his last outing, but the Chicago stalwart allowed four runs on six hits in six innings. Zambrano walked four in his final outing of a frustrating, injury-filled 2009 season. His record dropped to 9-7 and as Zambrano failed to post double-digit victories for the first time in his seven years as a Cubs starter. Ryan Doumit homered to power the Pittsburgh offense.

Blue Jays 12, RED SOX 0 No Holiday for BoSox
Roy Halladay became the only pitcher this season to hurl back-to-back shutouts as the dominant right-hander tossed a three-hitter to lead the Blue Jays past the Red Sox B team by a wipeout score of 12-0. Halladay had a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with six strikeouts and two walks to improve to 17-10. In his last six starts, the veteran has recorded three shutouts and four complete games while posting a 1.47 ERA. Randy Ruiz launched two homers, while Lyle Overbay and Jose Baustista also homered off Boston's Tim Wakefield.

REDS 6, Cardinals 1 Nix Nixes Smoltz Bid
Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo allowed just one run and pitched into the ninth inning to beat St. Louis, 6-1. Laynce Nix hit a grand slam off of a struggling John Smoltz to provide the offense for the Reds. Smoltz, who is under consideration for a spot in the postseason rotation for the NL Central champs, allowed six runs on six hits in four innings. The 42-year-old righty walked five and struck out two to fall to 1-3 while Arroyo improved to 15-13.
James Shields has had an up-and-down season after being a key member of Tampa Bay's AL pennant-winning rotation a year ago. Shields allowed three runs in the eighth inning after pitching seven scoreless frames to beat Baltimore, 5-3. Ben Zobrist lofted a three-run big fly and Carl Crawford also homered, helping the Rays win their 82nd game and guarantee a winning season--only their second in franchise history.
TIGERS 7, Twins 2 Tigers Roar Toward Title
Eddie Bonine overcame a rough first inning, allowing two runs in the initial frame, but the Tigers' bats came alive to beat the Twins, 7-2. Detroit can clinch its first division title since 1987 by beating the Twins on Thursday afternoon. Magglio Ordonez had a bases-clearing double, while Brandon Inge and Ramon Santiago each stroked two-run singles off Minnesota starter Carl Pavano, who previously had 4-0 record against the Tigers this season. Bonine allowed seven hits and notched three strikeouts to improve to 1-1 after taking a tough loss in Chicago last weekend while giving up just two hits.
Joba Chamberlain's struggles in New York continued as the erstwhile fan favorite allowed three runs in 3.2 innings and was booed by the home crowd while the Yankees fell 4-3 to Kansas City. The Bombers did all they could to even the score as Derek Jeter homered leading off the first, while Nick Swisher's 29th homer tied the score in the fifth. But KC's John Buck tripled home the winning run in the seventh off Sergio Mitre.
Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco struck out nine consecutive Braves--one short of the major league record--and hung on to beat Atlanta, 5-4. Nolasco finished with 16 strikeouts in the game, which is the most by any pitcher in more than two years. The record was set by Hall of Famer Tom Seaver for the New York Mets on April 22, 1970, against San Diego. Nolasco improved to 13-9 after striking out 14 of the first 19 enemy batsmen. The Braves were pushing for the NL Wild Card but, after the loss, are now a huge four games behind Colorado with but four left to play.
Justin Maxwell became the second player to hit a walk-off grand slam off of Francisco Rodriguez this year as the Nationals beat the Mets. It was Rodriguez's seventh blown save and the Nationals' first win of the season earned after trailing heading into the ninth inning. The Mets led 4-2 heading into the fatal frame before Rodriguez loaded the bases and then walked in a run, setting the stage for the big blow.
White Sox 1, INDIANS 0 (game 2) Hurly Buehrle
Mark Buehrle pitched six scoreless innings to end his season on a high note as Paul Konerko drove in the only run of the game as Chicago beat Cleveland to split a late-season doubleheader. Buehrle allowed three hits and struck out three in one of his best performances since his perfect game on July 23. The durable southpaw moved past the 200-inning plateau in the win and is the only active pitcher to throw at least 200 innings in each of the past nine seasons.
INDIANS 5, White Sox 1 (game 1) Wedge Issue
The Indians won the first game of a doubleheader but lost their manager on Wednesday. The Tribe's brain trust fired Eric Wedge prior to the game despite announcing that he will finish out the season in the dugout. Cleveland finished 35-46 at home, the team's worst record since 1991 when the Indians lost a franchise-record 105. Fausto Carmona, also having a forgettable season, ended his year on a high note by getting the win to improve to just 5-9. The erratic righty allowed one run on five hits in seven innings. Travis Hafner, another disappointment, homered for the Indians.
Charlie Morton pitched a four-hitter to lead the Pirates to a 4-0 shutout in the first game of their doubleheader at Wrigley Field. He struck out eight and outpitched Cubs starter Ted Lilly, who allowed four runs in the first inning to lose just his second home start of the season. Lilly settled down, but the left still fell to 12-9 and finished the season with his lowest win total since his 10 victories in 2005. The veteran nevertheless led the compartively effective Cubs' staff with a 3.10 ERA; the team's ERA is currently fifth in the NL at 3.81.

Cy Young lost the first game of the 1903 World Series on this date. He lost the game 7-3 to Deacon Phillippe and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Boston would go on to win the inaugural modern World Series, five games to three. Young, who won 28 games during the regular season, won Game 5 by an 11-2 score. He allowed just six hits and drove in three runs himself at the plate.
Young went 2-1 in the series with a 1.85 ERA and 17 strikeouts, allowing just seven runs. It was the only World Series the immortal Young would ever pitch in.
