I guess Governor Rendell won’t be joining Whoopi, Joy and the other ladies of “The View” anytime soon. During a “Morning Joe” interview today, the governor said the hit ABC show is beneath the dignity of the President of the United States.

President Obama appears on the popular ABC show Thursday.

“I think there are some shows — I wouldn’t put him on “Jerry Springer,” too, right?” he said, according to TVNewser. “I think the president of the United States has to go on serious shows. And “The View” is, you can make a case that it’s a serious show, but it also rocks and rolls a little bit. I’m not sure he has to go on “The View” to be open to questions.”

The Senate nominee tried to turn the tables during an appearance in Harrisburg this afternoon.

In a speech to the Pennsylvania Press Club, Sestak said by voting for President Bush’s tax cuts and budgets, Toomey was “practically pro-deficit.” He added Toomey “wants more tax cuts for the top one percent that will add 650 billion dollars to the deficit. My opponent has a lot of theories about the economy, but controlling deficits is not one of them.”

In contrast, Sestak framed himself as a fiscal moderate who wants to balance the government’s books.

Toomey’s campaign manager, Mark Harris, countered Sestak’s speech was “laughable,” and accused the Democrat of having a “selective memory.” Harris pointed out Sestak voted for the 2008 financial bailout, the 2009 federal stimulus package, the health care overhaul, and other measures that have boosted the federal deficit. Sestak defends most of those votes as emergency measures aimed at keeping the economy from sinking into a depression.

Harris took the speech as a complement, suggesting Sestak has co-opted Republican talking points in the face of the harsh political climate Democrats are facing.

The federal government ran a 1.4 trillion dollar deficit during the 2009 fiscal year. If you’re as confused as I am over who ran up more deficits, check out this helpful chart from the Congressional Budget Office. Additionally, CBO recently published out an executive summary of how the deficit has ballooned in recent years, and where federal spending is headed over the coming decade.

In much less wonky news, I asked Sestak after the event whether Governor Rendell had ever taken him up on his pre-primary offer of a hatchet-burying lunch at WaWa. (After Governor Rendell told our Politics as Usual podcast Sestak had “no chance of winning” the contest, Sestak said he looked forward to eating a “Rendelli” with the governor.)

Sestak laughed, and asked the gaggle of a dozen reporters if he was being taped.

Prosecutors read from the transcript during this morning’s preliminary hearing, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Tracie Mauriello. The Attorney General’s office told a judge the case is clear-cut — that DeWeese essentially admitted to ordering staffers to raise money and organize campaign efforts from their legislative offices.

But DeWeese’s lawyer, Bill Costopoulos, argued the Greene County Democrat thought staffers were doing the work on personal and comp time, and had no idea they were earning public money by electing Democrats to office.

DeWeese has been at the center of the “Bonusgate” storm since January 2007, when the Patriot-News first reported House Democrats were handing out tax-funded bonuses to staffers who volunteered on campaigns. DeWeese disavowed all knowledge of the bonuses-for-campaigning scheme, and was never charged with crimes related to it.

Instead, Attorney General Tom Corbett accused DeWeese of overseeing fundraising and campaigning within his own office. The judge bound DeWeese for trial. A date has not been set yet.

More from the AP and Tribune-Review.

For a Monday in late July, it’s a busy news day here at the Capitol. I’m off to interview Democratic gubernatorial nominee Dan Onorato in a bit, and then Democratic Senate candidate Joe Sestak speaks to the PA Press Club at noon. Check back later for full reports on both.

In the meantime, click here for an amazing photo gallery of a Canadian stunt pilot’s death-defying ejection from a crashing fighter jet on Friday. As you can see from the photo above, this guy was about six feet from crashing into the ground when he bailed, providing images straight out of a Michael Bay movie.

He began his career as a foreign correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor and New York Times, then came to CBS News in 1953 to work for the legendary Edward R. Murrow.

Among countless distinctions, Schorr made President Richard Nixon’s “Enemies List” due to his tough White House coverage in the 70s.

He joined NPR in the 1980s, and had been a familiar and comforting voice on All Things Considered, Weekend Edition and other programs ever since. NPR’s website has posted a detailed obit with a great photo gallery of Schorr’s career. More from CBS, the New York Times and Washington Post, as well.

Also make sure to read Weekend Edition host Scott Simon’s remembrance. Simon writes about how Schorr risked his career to publish a classified Congressional report about illegal CIA activities. When he was hauled before a committee and threatened with a contempt charge unless he outed the official who gave him the document, Schorr told the lawmakers, “To betray a source would be to betray myself, my career and my life.”

I spotted Schorr from across the room during a visit to Washington’s Newseum a few years ago. I started to approach him, but then changed my mind, deciding not to interrupt his afternoon. That’s a decision I’ve regretted ever since.

After a week in which partisan attack “journalism” dominated the national news cycle, the loss of Schorr — and the era he represented — is even harder to take.

Yesterday, Governor Rendell appeared before the Senate Transportation Committee and made an impassioned argument for an excess profits tax on oil companies.

By taking advantage of the Delaware Loophole, Rendell argued, energy companies like Exxon-Mobile and BP are paying only a fraction of the taxes they owe on more than 12 billion dollars worth of annual sales in Pennsylvania. He wants to exempt the companies from the corporate net income tax, and create a new levy focused specifically on them. “[The tax] would reap us somewhere between 800 and 900 million dollars a year,” he argued. “And I don’t think there’s one citizen out there who would do anything but applaud the action of this legislature.”

The governor argues the state could keep the oil giants from passing along the tax to consumers by creating an index of two or three other states with gas prices similar to Pennsylvania’s.

But a day later, one of Rendell’s top legislative point men in the upcoming transportation funding debate is throwing cold water on the proposal.

House Transportation Committee Chairman Joe Markosek, an Allegheny County Democrat, views the tax as a long shot, predicting a legal challenge from oil companies.

Markosek calls the tax a “populist notion,” but doubts it has enough supporters to pass the House. He declined to endorse a specific revenue plan, saying lawmakers need to figure out how much revenue they want to generate before moving onto the various proposals.

Other ideas proposed by Governor Rendell include a gas tax increase, raising vehicle and license registration fees, and leasing Pennsylvania roadways.

Baer writes about how Team Corbett has done its best to simply ignore the Onorato campaign’s ongoing offensive. “Corbett’s campaign manager did not return a phone call. Corbett’s campaign Web site last night showed “no upcoming events,” and the last news release listed was, ironically, “Tom Corbett Visits With Business Owners in Downtown Elizabethtown,” from the July 9 event at which he made the controversial remark.”

In sharp contrast, writes Hirschhorn, Team Onorato has morphed into “all jobs, all the time” mode. “Over a seven-day stretch this month, Democrat Dan Onorato held events in six cities, criticizing gubernatorial rival Tom Corbett at every stop for his comments about unemployed Pennsylvanians. His campaign blasted reporters more than half-a-dozen releases, produced a Web video and started an online petition. In each city he visited, Onorato picked up earned media—campaign parlance for when the press covers a candidate’s activities. Newspaper editorial pages came down mostly on his side of things.”

I would add another element: the aggressive way a handful of newspapers have continued to write article after article about the comment, independent of Onorato’s PR blitz. Yesterday, Corbett complained that some outlets have distorted and changed his initial comments, pointing out at least one paper claimed he called the unemployed “lazy.” I think the AG has a legitimate point — Democratic strategists and some columnists have exaggerated the quote, and made it more broad-sweeping and offensive than what he actually told reporters in Elizabethtown.

The full remarks, as initially reported here, are:

“One of the issues, and I hear it repeatedly – one of the individuals said, ‘I can’t get workers. People don’t want to come back to work while they still have unemployment.’’ He said. “They’re literally telling him, ‘I’ll come back to work when unemployment runs out.’ That’s becoming a problem.” “The jobs are there. But if we keep extending unemployment, people are going to sit there and – I’ve literally had construction companies tell me, I can’t get people to come back to work until…they say, I’ll come back to work when unemployment runs out.”
