October 10, 2010

When Minnesota suffered the greatest collapse in bowl history four years ago, it lost more than a game. The Insight Bowl fiasco of 2006 also cost the Gophers a potential Butkus Award winner.

Two days after Minnesota blew a 31-point, second-half lead in a 44-41 loss to Texas Tech, the Gophers fired coach Glen Mason. That move began the chain of events that caused a three-star prospect from Cincinnati to back out of his commitment to Minnesota and sign with Michigan State instead.

Little did anyone know that Greg Jones would become the nation’s best linebacker.

“I was really attracted to [Mason's] coaching staff,” Jones recalled as he reflected on his college choice. “I really felt I could learn from them and get better. Obviously it wasn’t meant to be.”

Jones isn’t regretting his decision now. While Minnesota is on a three-game losing streak that has Mason’s replacement — Tim Brewster — on the hot seat, Michigan State carries an undefeated record into its Big Ten opener Saturday against Wisconsin.

Michigan State’s chances of remaining unbeaten depend largely on whether Jones can help contain a potent Badgers rushing attack that features All-America candidate John Clay running behind one of the nation’s best offensive lines. It’s the kind of matchup that Jones savors.

“As a linebacker, it defines you,” Jones said. “This is a very tough team. I feel it’s two hard-nosed teams playing. It’s really going to test us.”

These types of games helped persuade Jones to return to school for his senior season. Jones, who ranks second among all active FBS players with 392 career tackles, earned consensus All-America honors last season. He likely would have been drafted in the first two rounds had he chosen to leave school after his junior year.

“It was incredibly, incredibly difficult,” Jones said. “I felt like I went back and forth a zillion times.”

Jones’ decision to stay should improve his draft stock. He currently is rated as the No. 1 inside linebacker prospect in the 2011 draft class by the website nfldraftscout.com, though it’s not a certainty he will go in the first round.

NFL teams lately have moved away from taking inside linebackers in the first round. Alabama‘s Rolando McClain, who went to the Oakland Raiders with the eighth overall pick, was the only inside linebacker taken in the opening round of the 2010 draft. The Atlanta Falcons took Sean Weatherspoon with the 19th overall pick, but the former Missouri star was seen as more of an outside linebacker prospect.

While that recent trend could hurt Jones’ draft stock, his consistent production as a four-year starter makes him a blue-chip prospect.

“I think he’s a special player,” said Rob Rang, a senior analyst for nfldraftscout.com. “I don’t think there’s any question about his consistency and the level of competition he’s faced throughout his career. I think he’s among the safest prospects in this entire draft, regardless of position.”

Jones commands such respect across the Big Ten that Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema has encouraged his own players to watch film of Jones.

“He’s got great intangibles,” Bielema said. “As a linebackers coach for a number of years, I always used to talk about vision. Certain guys can see tings out of the corner of their eyes and see things that aren’t in a normal linebacker’s vision. Ever since I’ve been watching him, he’s got that.”

Jones’ potential was evident to his high school coach at Cincinnati’s Archbishop Moeller. Bob Crable played at Notre Dame from 1976-81 and remains the Fighting Irish’s leading career tackler since the school began keeping track of the statistic in 1956. He knows a good linebacker when he sees one.

After Jones finished his sophomore year at Moeller, Crable moved him from a defensive end in a 4-3 scheme to a linebacker in a 3-3-5 system. Crable hasn’t been surprised by anything that Jones has accomplished since.

“He’ll outwork everyone,” Crable said. “He’s as hard a worker as I’ve ever been involved with in terms of coaching kids in football. He had some good instincts. I think the coaches [at Michigan State] have been able to develop his instincts better, but he had good ball instincts.

“What you can’t coach and teach is speed, and Greg always had that explosiveness that allows him the ability to compete at the highest level. That’s just God-given.”

The speed may have been God-given, but Jones said he learned the work ethic from his parents. His mother, Beverly, is a triage nurse who has worked in health care for more than three decades. His father, also named Greg, has worked as a bartender, a waiter and plenty of other jobs in the food and beverage business. Jones saw the way they went about their workday, and he has brought that same business-like approach to the football field.

“They taught me all about hard work,” Jones said. “My dad gets up early in the morning and comes home late at night. My mom works tough hours in health care. That’s how I learned how to deal with people and how to manage tough situations, even when a lot is called upon you.”

Although this marks Jones’ second season as a team captain, he feels more responsibility as a senior.

“Being a captain as a junior isn’t the same as being a captain as a senior,” Jones said. “You’ve been there longer. You have more say. You’ve been around the block a little more.”

His leadership has been apparent in recent weeks. Michigan State had every reason to suffer a letdown last week against FCS member Northern Colorado. The Spartans were coming off a thrilling overtime victory over Notre Dame that was decided by a fake field goal on the final play. The Wisconsin game was only a week away. And if that weren’t enough, Michigan State had to play the game without coach Mark Dantonio, who suffered a heart attack shortly after the Notre Dame game. But the Spartans cruised past Northern Colorado behind a big game from Jones, who had the first two interceptions of his career and a forced fumble.

“He’s done an outstanding job,” said Dantonio, who will coach from the press box this week. “He’s an outstanding person. He’s an extremely humble person, quiet by nature, but our players look to him for leadership in terms of how he does things. He’s not afraid to speak up when [it] is needed.”

Jones’ relationship with Dantonio helped bring him to Michigan State. Dantonio was coaching at Cincinnati when Jones began the recruiting process. When he committed to Minnesota, Cincinnati was his second choice. By the time Minnesota fired Mason and Jones re-opened his recruitment, Michigan State had hired Dantonio away from Cincinnati. Jones suddenly had the opportunity to remain in the Big Ten while also playing for Dantonio. It was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down.

Now he can’t imagine a better situation. He’s a front-runner for the Butkus Award. And his team’s undefeated.

Jones might not have taken the most direct route to Michigan State, but he believes he eventually reached the proper destination.

“I believe it was just divine intervention,” Beverly Jones said.

The Miami Hurricanes had a fairly convincing victory over the Clemson Tigers on Saturday, but the game was much closer than it needed to be. The primary reason for this is miscues on the offensive side of the ball, and the penalties that continue to be racked up by the Hurricanes. Let’s be honest though, the real problem is Jacory Harris and his decision making. That is the #1 thing that will keep this team from making any noise in the polls this season.

Harris threw two more interceptions in the game against Clemson, which brings his season total to eight. He can be forgiven for some of the interceptions in the Ohio State game because of mistakes by the wide receivers, but the last four he has thrown were avoidable and were squarely his fault. Many have defended Harris over the past month hoping he would get better, but after this last game it is apparent that there is an issue.

We don’t want to pile on Harris here, but it seems to the naked eye that he is just throwing passes up for grabs hoping to connect on a bomb. He hooked up on two to Leonard Hankerson against Clemson which broke the game open early, but the countless times where he dropped back and just threw the ball 30 or 40 yards became a bit too common. The commentators calling the game tried to explain it by saying that “it’s part of Miami’s offense”, and that Randy Shannon and Mark Whipple expect Harris to throw these passes deep.

This just proves just because you are calling a game does not mean that you always know what you are talking about, there are deep routes on almost every pass play. These routes are called to stretch out the defense and create windows for the quarterback to complete shorter passes, and occasionally when a deep route comes open you throw it. Harris behaves like the deep route is the first option on every pass play, other than screen passes. You could easily see that he would drop back, lock onto a deep target and just throw the ball up hoping for a miracle. A vast majority of these passes were nowhere near being a completion, batted down, or intercepted.

It is inherently obvious that Harris is making careless decisions, and lacks patience on pass plays. There were several situations where shorter routes were open, and Harris went for the home run. All of this contributes to the mistakes on the offense, because Harris throws deep all the time the lineman have to hold blocks for longer periods of time. This leads to the numerous holding penalties called on the Hurricanes, and the false start penalties because lineman were anticipating blocking for a longer period of time.

Harris does not seem to be a man in control of the offense; he plays like a player who knows that he will not be benched. That fact is probably true; there are not many scenarios where Harris will not be quarterbacking this team, which may be the source of the problem. The lack of anyone at the quarterback position to push Harris for the starting position may be a problem, what is the incentive for Harris to get better at making decisions? He has no fear of being benched, so why not just throw it deep every play?

The Hurricanes appear to be stuck with Harris as he gives the team the best chance to win at this point, but it will be tough sledding in big games unless Harris improves his decision making. The Clemson game could have been a two or three touchdown blowout, but with the interceptions and impatience shown on offense it kept the Tigers in the game. The better teams the Hurricanes will face down the line will capitalize on those mistakes, as it is clear that Harris has almost regressed in his development since last season. He has all the tools to be a great college quarterback, but his decision making is keeping him as a mediocre one.

What’s up with The U?

The U is off to a steady, yet slow start to recruiting with fewer than 10 guys committed at this time. With the expectations of this being a small class that packs a lot of punch, which big-time guys do you see Miami closing with?

- J.W. from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Miami only has room for roughly 15 players in this year’s class so with eight already committed it has to be picky and careful with offers. That being said, it really hopes to close out with some big names, especially if it wins the ACC as many think and end up in a BCS bowl game.

Sammy Watkins is a must-get in my opinion and it’s down to Miami and Clemson and the ‘Canes are battling Florida State and others for tight end Nick O’Leary. Bryant Dubose is also a very good possibility in this class and Miami is hoping to keep Jabari Gorman and Robenson Therezie at home. Those are some of the big names, but with a huge finish and a move back to national prominence, others could emerge if they visit. Last year no one expected Miami to land Seantrel Henderson and Latwan Anderson after National Signing Day, so anything can happen.

Michigan State’s chances

So I really want to know what you see when you look at Michigan State and its recruiting class for this year, and potential future recruiting classes. Do these classes have the talent to challenge the top-tier teams in the Big Ten? Will they continue to improve? Also do you see them continuing to have success with in-state recruiting?

-	Joe from East Lansing, Mich.

I think this is a pretty good Michigan State class but probably middle of the road in the Big Ten barring some surprises late. Lawrence Thomas is an absolute stud and there are some good players with potential such as Connor Cook, Taiwan Jones, Donavon Clark and Ed Davis.

With a 4-0 start heading into Big Ten play, Michigan State is hot and I think you’ll see a bigger year out of the Spartans in 2012 if they have a great season. They could still pull some surprises by landing DeAnthony Arnett, Doran Grant, Donovan Smith, Anthony Zettel and some others, but I think a big 2012 could be in the making for MSU. It’s supposed to be a good year in state and will be an important year for the Spartans.

Who was the best high school football player and what team had the best recruiting class since Rivals started?

-	Kevin from New Rochelle, N.Y.

This is an interesting question and certainly open to debate among all the analysts. Personally, the best high school player I’ve seen since I’ve been covering recruiting is Noel Devine, that is until this year. Devine was simply amazing with his ability to cut without losing any speed and his spin move in high school was phenomenal.

However, this year when I saw Jadeveon Clowney I knew I was seeing something special. Not only is he rarer because of the position he plays, but his combination of size, agility, quickness and balance is outstanding. I’ve never seen a kid his size get off the ball quicker and move around so effortlessly. As for the best recruiting class, I’d have to go with the 2006 Florida class that featured Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin, Brandon Spikes, Riley Cooper and others. That group led the Gators to two national titles and will go down as one of the greatest classes ever.

Maryland’s land

What are the Terps’ chances of getting local prospects Cyrus Kouandjio, who appears to be leaning toward Alabama, Donovan Smith, Travis Hughes and Darius Jennings? And when can we expect to see some big-time recruits come to College Park?

-	Kevin from College Park, Md.

I think the best shot Maryland has is with Jennings, who is the kind of kid I can picture staying close to home and becoming a big fish in a small pond rather than go to a traditional power and potentially wait his turn. Kouandjio is all but done to Alabama in my opinion and I’d be stunned if he landed elsewhere. Smith is a lean to Penn State but the Terps still have a shot. Hughes’ brother is at Maryland and I think the Terps are rising on his list. But in order I’d say Jennings, Hughes, Smith and Kouandjio as far as potential Maryland commitments.

Michigan’s next star

Michigan needs an athletic running back to complement Denard Robinson. Will Demetrius Hart seize this opportunity to play for the Wolverines?

-	Bill from Ada, Mich.

Bill, I think he will but it will be close. Demetrius is a perfect fit in a Rich Rodriguez offense, has enjoyed his visits to Ann Arbor, and has a couple of friends already on the team. He’s visiting Alabama this weekend but it seems the Tide want him as a slot receiver instead of a running back. So unless that changes, this should come down to Michigan and Auburn. From what I hear, Michigan has the edge but this one wouldn’t surprise me either way.

Clowney and the Buckeyes

With the recent rumors of Jadeveon Clowney and Ohio State talking, do you think that the Buckeyes have a realistic shot at landing him?

-	Charles from Fort Bragg, N.C.

Charles, I have read the rumors and things change very quickly in recruiting, but in speaking to Jadeveon in person a few weeks ago, he wasn’t looking north at all. South Carolina and Alabama are still his top two in my opinion, despite rumors of Auburn replacing the Tide. I think LSU and Auburn are in the next group and then its Miami and the rest. I’d even be surprised if he took an official visit to Ohio State, but if he does then things can get interesting. But right now I’d put the chances he ends up as a Buckeye as very slim.

UCLA on the East Coast

UCLA has made a huge push in the East this year with Ray Drew, Wayne Lyons, Gabriel Wright, Tony Steward, Donovan Smith, Kevin McReynolds, etc. Who do you think the Bruins have a shot with and what do you think of Rick Neuheisel going to the other coast for recruiting?

-	Jacob from Westwood, Calif.

Jacob, I think Neuheisel realizes that to build a national power in California, you need to recruit nationally as USC did in the Pete Carroll years. It never hurts to offer top players from the East Coast. While I don’t expect UCLA to land any of the players mentioned above, it could get a few out on official visits and that’s how it starts. Top players talk to other top players in the next class about how nice it is at UCLA and momentum builds.

Last year UCLA got Aramide Olaniyan from Virginia and maybe it can steal someone this year as well. The win over Texas made national news and was a statement game, but UCLA will need to win the Pac-10 once or twice before it can truly start pulling four- and five-star East Coast kids.

Sister luck is screaming out

“Sister Luck,” Black Crowes

Are those Black Crowes flying over Georgia’s Sanford Stadium? Or hungry buzzards?

The once-proud Bulldogs have fallen on really hard times, losing four games in a row for the first time in two decades. Georgia will have to beat Tennessee at home on Saturday to avoid its first five-game drought since 1953.

Black Crowes front man Chris Robinson surely isn’t happy about the Bulldogs’ current plight. Robinson and his brother Rich formed the band in Atlanta in 1984, when the Bulldogs were fresh off their streak of winning three consecutive SEC titles and the 1980 national championship.

Now, the Bulldogs can’t even beat Mississippi State or Colorado on the road. At least the Black Crowes are still flying strong; the band was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame last month.

There’s nothing legendary about this week’s Pillow Fight of the Week. New Mexico and New Mexico State, who are a combined 0-9 this season, play at Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces, N.M., on Saturday night. There will be more than bragging rights at stake; the winner also gets a one-week reprieve from the Bottom 10.

With apologies to the Black Crowes and Steve Harvey, here’s this week’s Bottom 10:

October 10, 2010

The general perception entering Saturday’s in-state showdown is Michigan State has the overall superior team — a better defense (OK, a defense) and better special teams.

But Michigan, which opened as a five-point favorite, has the best player. And the value of that player right now is off the charts.

It’s understandable for one individual to have such an impact on a game in college basketball.

But football?

What Denard Robinson is doing is just crazy.

Knowing his defense can’t get a stop and his kicker can’t kick a field goal, “Shoelace” must feel as if he has to score every possession.

He might have to against Michigan State.

And he just might do it. He’s that good, that hot.

Consider the following:

* Robinson’s total yards per game, 382.6, is more than 59 teams in the FBS (Division I-A).

* His 181-yard rushing average is better than 78 FBS teams, twice as much as 14 teams and three times as much as Bowling Green and Colorado State.

* Robinson is on pace to run for 2,172 yards in 12 regular-season games, which will break the NCAA records for rushing yards in a season by a quarterback.

The FBS records are held by Air Force’s Beau Morgan, who averaged 135.8 per game and finished with 1,494 yards in 1996.

The NCAA records belong to Jayson Foster, who averaged 167.6 for a total of 1,844 yards in 2007 with Georgia Southern (FCS/Division I-AA).

* Shoelace’s 905 rushing yards in five games already ranks third in Big Ten history for a quarterback in a season, behind only Indiana’s Antwaan Randle El, who had 1,270 yards in 2000 and 964 yards in 2001.

So what is his true value?

“If he were not playing this week, you are looking at Michigan State being around a three-point favorite,” said Mike Seba, a senior odds-maker for Las Vegas Sports Consultants, which helps set the opening line for sports books. “This means that for this game we would have his worth at about 7.5 points.”

Based on the hype, you might think Shoelace is worth three or four touchdowns.

In reality, 7 1/2 points is a lot for one player.

“When we make a line on a game when a star player is out, we have to always keep in mind how much the public thinks the player is worth, even if we don’t agree with that opinion,” Seba explained. “Right now, the public perception on Robinson is extremely high, to say the least, so we have to be sure and account for that in our number.

“As tremendous as his value is to his team, it would not be greater than the value of someone like a Ben Roethlisberger (Miami-Ohio) or Michael Vick (Virginia Tech) was to their respective college teams because their margin for error was quite a bit less.

“They could not afford to lose someone of that caliber and still be competitive against a good team. Robinson plays for a team that has quality players up and down the roster and also has a quality back-up QB in (Tate) Forcier.”

Nevertheless, if you listen to some people, even though Forcier was impressive against Bowling Green, the only reason the Wolverines have any chance against Michigan State, or in almost any game this season, is because of Robinson.

The fear of an injury increases now because Big Ten defenses are more physical than Michigan’s non-conference opponents.

Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones has been impressed by Robinson’s toughness.

“He cuts it back in traffic,” Jones said.” You’re putting yourself at risk. When you’re a quarterback, you usually don’t want to do that. You get to the sideline, you slide.

“He’s a tough guy for doing that. He gets back up, does it again. Pretty brave by him.”

Robinson’s teammates and coaches have been begging him to avoid taking unnecessary hits.

To this point, Robinson, despite being hampered by a bruised left knee the last couple weeks, has dodged any major bullets.

He looks unstoppable, but so does the opposition against Michigan’s defense.

These games are beginning to resemble a tennis match. Who’s going to break serve?

Michigan State’s defensive players were asked question after question about Robinson during Tuesday’s news conference in East Lansing.

They were probably fed up with it from their head to their, well, shoelaces.

The Spartans were respectful mind you, but they aren’t going to concede anything, not even to the Heisman Trophy front-runner.

“It’s definitely going to be fun to try to stop him,” linebacker Eric Gordon said. “He deserves all the hype.

“It gives us a great opportunity to show what our Spartan defense is all about and that we can compete with anybody.”

Can they contain Robinson?

It only takes one hit to knock him out. But first you have to catch him.

Until someone does, this amazing one-man show will keep on rolling.

Five reasons why Michigan State will win:

1. Kirk Cousins picks apart Michigan’s soft secondary

2. Dan Conroy is 7-for-7 on field goals, Michigan’s kickers are 1-for-5

3. The defense looks like the ’85 Bears compared to Michigan’s D

4. Surprising O-line is opening holes for a three-headed monster at running back

5. Series has taken a turn, MSU is now the “big” brother

Five reasons why Michigan will win:

1. Denard

2. Home-field advantage

3. Denard

4. Revenge for last two years

5. Denard

Prediction: The Denards 49, Sparty 42

Barry Sanders Jr. whittles list of schools to four

Posted by John Taylor on October 1, 2010 9:28 AM ET

For those in Cowboy Nation hoping for another/the next Barry Sanders to bring his ankle-breaking abilities to Stillwater someday, there’s some good news this morning as a high school-er with a direct genetic link to Barry v1.0 has the school residing on his short for-the-moment list.

Of course, he’s still two years away from hitting a college football field and all the schools that are in the recruiting mix are at the mercy of the changing whims of a teenager, but still, there’s a chance. A chance at a player whose DNA apparently did not stray far from that of his father’s.

Speaking to OkBlitz.com, Barry Sanders Jr., one of the top high school running backs in the Class of 2012, said he is currently focused on four schools amongst the multitudes who have offered him scholarships. His father’s alma mater Oklahoma State is one of them, obviously, as well as defending national champion Alabama, UCLA and Florida State. He’s also received offers from Auburn, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Texas A&M among others.

When it comes to following in his famous father’s collegiate footsteps or striking out on his own path, though, the younger Sanders is getting no pressure from his family to go either way.

“I haven’t really felt much pressure, because my family hasn’t really been pressuring me,” he said. “I think that when people start feeling the pressure, it’s because it’s coming from the family and the people you’re around. But nobody I’m really close with has been pressuring me into it, so I feel like I can go anywhere I want to.”

Sanders will be in Dallas for the Oklahoma-Texas rivalry game, and also intends to take in the Alabama-Ole Miss game Oct. 16. It appears that Nick Saban and the Tide are putting a very hard sell on Sanders, impressing upon the young man the success of their running backs of late.

“He told me they get a lot of television exposure, and how Ingram winning the Heisman has a lot to do with it, and how their last four freshmen running backs and have gotten some solid playing time,” Sanders said of a conversation with Saban. “That’s very good to hear when you want to play early and make a contribution to the team. He said Tuscaloosa is a great place, and I look forward to going down there to visit.”

Sanders has no timetable for giving a verbal commitment.
