Roger Harvell was born and raised in Izard County, Arkansas, the son of John Henry "Owen" William Harvell and Sibyl Emily Walker. His Izard County roots run deep, even to a time before the county existed. Roger's maternal Walker line was in the area when it was still a part of the Missouri Territory.

Roger is a graduate of Melbourne High School, class of 1966. Immediately after graduation, he joined the Air Force and served more than six years, including a year in Vietnam.

After his Air Force experience, he became a computer programmer for a data processing company in Little Rock. It was during this period that he became acquainted with George Fisher, the editorial cartoonist for the Arkansas Gazette. It was from this relationship that Roger received the encouragement to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a cartoonist.

He began that career by contributing one cartoon a week for the North Little Rock Times. After about six months of this, he took his then published work and called on the editors of the Pine Bluff Commercial. He was hired as staff editorial cartoonist and remained with the Commercial for over six years.

He left the Commercial in 1983 to become the editorial cartoonist for the Greenville, South Carolina, newspapers. First for the afternoon paper the Greenville Piedmont and later for the Greenville News, a position that he retains at this writing.

Roger's interest in genealogy became a
passion in 1999, when he came into possession of his father's research. It was
through new genealogy acquaintances, (most notably Charles Harvell of Colorado
and the late Michael Harwell Flanagan) that he first started seriously using
geography as an integral part of his research. It started with an effort to plot
Harwell/Harvell properties in Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, many of
which are completed.

After turning his attention to Izard County, it became apparent to him that he had relatives in every township in the county. So, after five years of effort, on and off, he has completed the entire county with all of the original owners depicted.

Roger presently lives on the home place in Izard County, with his wife, Karan, and youngest son Eric Greenleif.
