Renowned architect Frank Gehry, who designed the gracefully curved Disney Concert Hall, officially unveiled his ambitious plans for the downtown Grand Avenue project this morning. At the heart of his vision are two translucent, glass-curtained towers, which would boldly transform the Los Angeles skyline. Host Patt Morrison talks with Frank Gehry's partner, Craig Webb; as well as Craig Hodgetts, Creative Director, Hodgetts + Fung Design Associates.

The United States will seek a U.N. Security Council vote this week on a resolution to impose the first-ever sanctions on participants in the Darfur conflict in western Sudan, U.S. officials said Friday. Critics say that the sanctions might complicate Darfur peace talks in Abuja, Nigeria, where negotiators are working to beat an April 30 deadline. Meanwhile, the relief effort in the region could collapse within weeks unless foreign donors contribute more money and the government eases restrictions that have slowed aid workers. Patt Morrison takes a look at the situation in Sudan with Katherine Houreld, Stringer for the Christian Science Monitor, Ambassador Michael Ranneberger, US State Department Senior Representative for Sudan, Georgette Gagnon, Deputy Director of the Africa Division, Human Rights Watch, and Carroll Bogert, Associate Director of Human Rights Watch.

Saving for retirement never seemed like an easy feat, and now it seems to even more difficult. As a recent LA Times series highlights, seniors have to be increasingly alert for unscrupulous insurance agents, and employees have to watch for added costs hiding within their 401k accounts. Times staff writers Josh Friedman and John Corrigan discuss with Patt some of the unfortunate trends in saving for retirement. Elisse Walter, of NASD (formerly National Association of Security Dealers) talks about industry regulations that are currently in place and certified financial planner Jack Stemper joins the conversation to answer listener concerns about their savings plans. There is legislation in the works, authored by state senator Jack Scott, who joins with his ideas for reform.

Times-Picayune senior editor James O'Byrne was among those at the epicenter of the newspaper's coverage of Hurricane Katrina, evacuating the newsroom on one of the last trucks out, then overseeing the construction of a satellite newsroom, copy desk, and photo desk in Baton Rouge. He is also among the scores of employees at the paper whose house and belongings were destroyed by the storm. Recently, the paper was awarded Pulitzer prizes for public service and breaking news for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina and the flooding of New Orleans. O'Byrne joins Patt for a look back at Katrina and a look forward to the future of New Orleans.

America's violent struggle over abortion is captured in the new book Absolute Convictions (Henry Holt and Company), which gives a first hand account of a family and a city on the front lines of the debate. Author Eyal Press joins Patt Morrison to discuss his account of his father's experience as an obstetrician in the blue-collar city of Buffalo, New York, and being caught in the crossfire between moral fervor and individual rights.

What is considered to be a free-flowing world of entertainment, enlightenment, education, and interaction is currently facing legislation that could change what is now known as "network neutrality." Today web traffic is handled similarly to phone traffic with each "call" being equal, no matter how large or small the site may be. Some of the nation's largest telephone and cable companies are lobbying to introduce the idea of Internet "gatekeepers," which would allow them to decide which sites go fast or slow and which won't load at all. If legislation passes, the Internet will look more like cable TV as network owners will decide what channels, content and applications are available, while consumers choose from their set menu. To explain what this means to the average web-surfer, Patt Morrison is joined by Declan McCollagh, Chief Political Correspondent Cnet News.com; Timothy Karr, Campaign Director of Free Press/Coordinator of Save the Internet Coalition; James Gattuso, Senior Fellow in Regulatory Policy, Heritage Foundation; and Joel Tucker, Owner, Stockroom.com.

Among them the Remainders have published over 150 titles, sold over 200 million books, and have been translated into over 25 languages, but for one week a year they are rock stars -- "Artist Access Only"- laminate-wearing, security-escorted rock stars -- with roadies and groupies. And today Patt is joined for an in-studio jam with band members Roger McGuinn and Frank McCourt. Dave Barry is checking in from the road.

The Rock Bottom Remainders will perform Saturday, April 29, 2:30 pm, at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The free outdoor concert, with Roger Mcguinn, takes place on the Etc. Stage, UCLA Campus. For information, visit Festival of Books.

The band will also perform that evening at 8 pm at UCLA's Royce Hall in a concert supporting 826LA . Billed as "BESIDES THE MUSIC: Conversation, Debate (with international scoring rules) and yes, Music", it will feature literary debate, a discussion of world issues, announcement of a major political initiative, and a set of music. For ticket information, contact the UCLA ticket office at 310-825-2101 or go to www.826LA.org.

Winning voters' trust has become a hard task for politicians. As the level of cynicism in Washington appears to rise, perturbed Americans of all ideologies are faced with a political framework in which relying on politicians seems to be a chancy gamble. Joe Klein has been immersed in politics for years and is aware of and familiar with the quirks, changes and deterioration of the system. He joins Patt to talk about his latest book, Politics Lost: How American Democracy Was Trivialized by People Who Think You're Stupid (Doubleday).

Joe Klein will take part in a panel discussion on The American Identity and will be signing books at the LA Times Festival of Books on Saturday, April 29th, at 2 pm.

The history of the Central Library in downtown Los Angeles is one that is filled with notable characters and compelling drama. What seemed like the end on April 29, 1986 when an arson fire destroyed nearly 400,000 books and documents, turned out to be the chance for a new beginning as the renovated Central library reopened six years later. Patt Morrison and Los Angeles City Librarian Fontayne Holmes take a look back at the rich history of the library and the fire that nearly brought its ruin.

T.S. Elliott wrote: "April is the cruelest month." Since 1996, the Academy of American Poets has tried to change that by celebrating National Poetry Month as a way to focus attention on the art of poetry, our poetic heritage, and our living poets. Al Young, California’s poet laureate, joins Patt with his thoughts on the state of this literary form in our culture today.

On May 3, 2006, Al Young will present "Once Upon a Time: Telling Stories Through the Arts", a new poem commissioned by the Education Division of the Music Center for the 27th Very Special Arts Festival.
