Via MLB Trade Rumors:

Royals' super-utility man Willie Bloomquist is drawing attention from multiple clubs, according to the Kansas City Star's Bob Dutton.

After a terrible start to the season, which Bloomquist attributed to offseason knee surgery, his bat has begun to heat up, with 14 hits in his last 37 at-bats. Add that to his speed, defensive versatility (he's appeared everywhere except pitcher and catcher in 2010 already), and affordable contract, and Bloomquist would be a welcome addition for many clubs.

....

Bloomquist notes that he'd like to stay in Kansas City for another five or six years if possible, and manager Ned Yost shares that sentiment, but it shouldn't be a surprise to see him in a new uniform come August 1.

Haha. Haha. Haha. Willie Bloomquist wants to be a Royal for six more years. Haha. Haha. Haha. Professional utility players crack me up sometimes.

Are there any signings that will actually have implications on the Seahawks performance next season?

In free agency, no. The only possible signing I could think of would be former UW center Kevin Mawae. However, Mawae is the head of the player's union, and has been accusing teams of collusion by not signing him, when he is clearly talented. The only issue there is that he is 39, and somewhat of a headcase, so picking him up would still be a risk. Some may argue that the Seahawks should sign Terrell Owens, but with one semi-diva wide receiver on the team in Houshmanzadeh, adding a full blown Star Jones would not help the situation.

There are only so many passes Matt Hasselback (and J.P. Losman and Charlie Whitehurst when Hasselback goes down with the inevitable back injury) can throw. Housh, Deion Branch, and Donut Stealer Tate should provide a solid enough wide receiving corps. The same goes for Vincent Jackson - they're not going to win enough this year to justify trading for him - the Hawks ought to develop the young ones they have now.

What the heck are vuvuzelas?

Vuvuzelas are a trumpet-like plastic instrument typically wielded at World Cup events. Many people in South Africa defend their use because during South African league soccer matches, people blow them freely. The difference is that at those games, about a tenth of the crowd blow their vuvuzelas. At the World Cup, has them. That makes the buzzing noise (A concert B flat) pretty much unbearable. That doesn't mean I won't order one just to bother people with, though...

What was the worst trade the Mariners ever made at the deadline?

This one is pretty clear, to all. In 1997, the Mariners desperately needed a reliever. So, they traded for the one, the only, Heathcliff Slocumb. Now, it's not like ol' Healthcliff pitched horribly for the Mariners, but he didn't pitch very well. That wasn't the issue. The problem was that the Mariners dealt away near-ready MLB prospects Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek. You might have heard of them.

Varitek was semi-blocked at the catcher position due to Dan Wilson, but Wilson was getting up there in years. Lowe had already tasted the bigs at the age of 24, but I guess the Mariners were unimpressed with his ERA of over 6.00 at the time and gave up on him. That trade sure did suck.

What was the best trade the Mariners ever made at the deadline?

This wasn't at the deadline per se, but on July 21, 1988, the Mariners dealt away one of their best hitters in Ken Phelps. Luckily, they received in return one of the most beloved hitters in Mariner's history, Jay "The Bone" Buhner. I feel a special affection for this deal, since I received a Buhner Buzz cut in 3rd grade and have had short hair ever sense. In a way, this deal changed my appearance forever. Kind of.

Remind me...what was Shawn Kemp like when he was good? Give me a current NBA player comparison.

Oh boy. Shawn Kemp was the ultimate high-flying big man. His specialty was without a doubt throwing down lobs from Gary Payton. He also grabbed a solid ten rebounds a game for about a 5-year stretch during his career. He was a decent shot blocker, but perhaps not as good as he could have been for being a 6'10 sky-walker. He was also cocky as hell, and had his fair share of off-court problems, including fathering about 20% of America's population (only a slight overestimate).

Honestly, the best comparison I can come up with right now is what Derrick Favors could be, and what Stromile Swift could have been. He's not as good (or big) as Dwight Howard, but had similar athleticism. He left the Sonics because he was being severely underpaid, and the Sonics refused to restructure his contract while giving Jim McIlvane 7 million a year for 5 years. Oh well, he ended up getting fat anyway.

As Pineda is the best Mariner pitching prospect to make it all the way to Tacoma since Felix Hernandez, I decided to make the trip to see his debut on Wednesday against the Angels' AAA affiliate, the Salt Lake Bees.

I was not disappointed, as Pineda showed why he has gotten so much hype as of late.

Pineda's first few innings were a breeze, as the 21 year old righty look like a man amongst boys. His fastball topped out at 97mph in the first inning (it would eventually reach 98), and he had excellent command of the pitch in the early goings before finally going with his fantastic slider to strike out Michael Ryan to end the inning.

The second inning and third innings were more of the same, as Pineda mostly relied on his fastball which had excellent velocity and movement, occasionally throwing in one of his breaking pitches, which both looked very good all game.

Pineda got into some trouble in the fourth and fifth innings, but showed composure in getting out of some jams. In the fourth he lost command of his fastball, getting into three three-ball counts and walking two. Luckily, Pineda managed to get out of the inning, but he would face a more dangerous situation in the fifth. Pineda walked the lead off batter and allowed 3B Paul McAnulty to bloop a single in front of RF David Winfree for the first and only hit surrendered by Pineda all game, giving Salt Lake men on first and second base with no outs.

Though his shutout was threatened, Pineda did not show any sign of nervousness, striking out Bees RF Terry Evans, allowing a weak ground out to first which moved the runners up, then striking out CF Peter Bourjos on three pitches, the last one being a pretty nasty slider which almost got away from a rehabbing Adam Moore, but he recovered and threw Bourjos out to end the inning with no runners crossing home plate.

Pineda looked noticeable tired in the sixth inning, with the velocity on his fastball going from 94-95mph to about 92-93mph. However, he was once again able to control it, and was able to get two fairly quick outs before allowing Mike Trumbo make the best contact that any player had made off Pineda all game, a towering fly ball which CF Greg Halman caught on the warning track in deep left-center field. That was it for Pineda, who's final line was 6 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 5K, 3BB, 8 swinging strikes with 90 pitches thrown (60 of them for strikes).

Pineda did a good job doing most things a pitcher has to do, but the most encouraging sign is that very few hitters could make good contact off of him. He got seven ground outs and with the exception of Trumbo's long fly ball, most of the flyouts were weakly hit popups. He got his strikeouts and though he had a moment where he lost his command, he was able to get it back.

Hopefully the issues with his command were simply just getting adjusted to the more patient hitters in AAA as he was known for his command in AA. His raw stuff looked fantastic and he was very exciting to watch. Barring injury, Pineda should see a September call up this year, as the Mariners eventually have to put him on the 40 man roster anyway.

Other Notes

For those of you who do not regularly see minor league baseball games in person, it is a very different experience than going to Safeco field. arriving an hour before the game, I saw a Rainiers player reading a book on a bench in the concourse outside the stadium. The seating is very intimate and the whole experience is much friendlier than the purposefully more intimidating major league stadiums. It was a very fun change of pace.

Cheney Stadium has undergone some remodels since I last visited several years ago. There is a big HD jumbotron in left field with a traditional scoreboard in right. My tickets behind home plate only cost ten bucks, which was nice, but the crappy hamburger and soda I had before the game also cost ten bucks. No outside food is allowed.

As for the rest of the game, the offense was highlighted by enigmatic prospect Greg Halman, who had an RBI single, a double, and a rare walk, and Mike Wilson, who hit a towering home run to left that landed far beyond the left field fence and into the parking lot. Adam Moore also continued his rehab assignment with two hits including an RBI double. The Rainiers won the game 6-2.

Why do baseball players suck when they are on the M's and flourish when they leave (Beltre, Silva, Guillen)?

I don't know, why don't you ask John Olerud, Ken Phelps, J.J. Putz, Jarrod Washburn, Jose Guillen, and Ken Griffey Jr? There is no curse on Mariner players that is lifted as they go to another team. Usually players who do better after they leave have obvious reason for it. Beltre moved from a park that suppressed right handed pull hitters to a park that rewards them. Silva completely reinvented how he pitches (a subject that is worth its own post), throwing far fewer of his fastballs than with Seattle.

Guillen had a late career power surge as he entered the prime of his career. However, it works the other way as well. The fact is that the media and fans mostly ignore when an ex-Mariner falters away from Seattle because it isn't as interesting, but when an ex-Mariner succeeds, it becomes a popular "what if?" story. Sure, the Mariners have a long history of bad roster decisions, but the idea that players always get better after they leave is overblown.

When the Mariners played the Cardinals, we saw two of the greatest players of the new millennium, Albert Pujols and Ichiro Suzuki, in a rare meeting on the same field. Though the two players have little in common aside from the fact that each has an extraordinary amount of baseball talent, one thing that they share is that they were both named rookie of the year in their respective leagues in 2001. Remembering that fact made me wonder whether any pair of rookies of the year had ever had careers as successful as those of Ichiro and Albert Pujols.

Being the somewhat obsessive baseball nut I am, I decided to find out. The Rookie of the year award dates back to 1947, and it was first given out in both leagues in 1949. This means that rookies such as Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Ty Cobb, or any other player who entered the league before 1947 were not rookies of the year, and thus I will not compare them to Ichiro and Pujols. Jackie Robinson, the first ever rookie of the year, will not be compared to Ichiro or Pujols because he won the award back when there was only one for both leagues, and thus has no partner to match up with.

In order to define career success, I chose to use career WAR (Wins Above Replacement) because it shows a player’s complete on-field production over the course of his career. If you want to make your own list using your own definition of career success, which could include World Series rings, Batting Titles, cigars smoked, amount of legitimate (or illegitimate) children fathered, or any other measure of quality, you can go do that on your own time. I won’t stop you.

However, I am using career WAR, which I got from fangraphs.com (except for Tom Seaver, as pitcher WAR is not available on fangraphs before 1979. Seaver’s WAR was found on baseballreference.com). For this exercise, I have decided to ignore Ichiro’s years in Japan. There have been three years in the history of the Rookie of The Year Award where both award recipients became Hall of fame players.

As Twitter exploded with the news of Ken Griffey Jr's retirement from baseball, one couldn't help but be a little disappointed with how it all ended. Not having the chance to say one last goodbye to this athlete who gave us so much is difficult. Shannon Drayer said if it were up to him he would just send a fax that said "He Gone" that was his style.(Full article here: it is by far my favorite article about Griffey's departure) However, Junior understands what he means to the great people of Seattle. I take his abrupt departure as a sign that he still has unfinished business in Seattle. This won't be how he will want it to end. I think after some years of well-deserved time with his family, Griffey could easily return to the Pacific Northwest as a coach or manager. Hopefully, then, we will be able to give him the goodbye that he deserves. (Read more after the jump)

The campaign has already started to get Ken Griffey Jr. voted into the 2010 All-Star game. Here is a website already dedicated to the cause. In my opinion, this is a great idea for baseball to pay proper respects to a player that meant so much to the game. If there are people wondering if he could still get in if he's retired--he can. One example is Mike Schmidt who was voted into the 1989 All-Star game despite retiring in the middle of the season.

There is some opposition to this happening, especially now because of the game's impact on home-field advantage for the World Series. However, after watching Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn get honored at Safeco Field in the 2001 All-Star game, I believe that Ken Griffey Jr. also deserves one last trip to to the Midsummer Classic. For those interested in voting Griffey in, vote here. Voting ends on July 1st.

Are you against the idea of voting Griffey into the All-Star game? Or do you think he should have one last moment in the All-Star game?
