Most moms make many sacrifices to help their children, to encourage and support them. Moms with breast cancer struggle to continue to parent their children.

Rhonda Lassiter is a single –parent mom with two sons in high school who play football. When she told her sons she had stage 3 breast cancer, one of them said he didn’t want it to change her.

Imagine the courage and determination it took for Rhonda to ask the nurse at her first chemotherapy treatment to hurry up. She had a game to attend and her own regular seat there.

How many breast cancer moms would finish chemotherapy at 3:15 pm and be on the road to their sons’ football game by 4:00 pm? Rhonda did it.

That breast cancer mom endured four surgeries and still didn’t miss a single game. What a cheerleader.

Imagine a breast cancer patient going from the recovery room to her sons’ football game. Rhonda wouldn’t think of missing a game. The team players wore pink socks in her honor. Arrangements were made for her to watch the game from her car, but she insisted on sitting in her regular place. That way her sons could see her.

Rhonda Lassiter suffers from nerve damage to her legs, which prevented her from returning to her job. She dreams of returning to work and getting her life back. With her fighting spirit, she will probably succeed.

 Monday, September 26th, 2011

When men or women receive a diagnosis of breast cancer, a natural emotion is anger.

They can be angry about the disruption of their lives. They can be angry about the need for surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and the cost.

Some women breast cancer patients are angry with the Food and Drug Administration for approving hormone replacement therapy which increased their chances by 80% of getting breast cancer.

Both men and women can be angry about second-hand smoke. In the USA, many public places are smoke-free. However, smokers still have the smell of tobacco on their clothes, on their hair and on their breath. Breast cancer patients may have to pass one or more smokers congregated outside as they enter a hospital, drug store or other facility.

Breast cancer patients may be angry about their genes that may have predisposed them to a life-threatening disease. They may never have had a chance because of their family history.

Other reasons for the anger of breast cancer patients exist. Please don’t judge them or cut them off. Allow breast cancer patients to express their anger and work through it. Allow them to be human beings dealing with breast cancer.

 Friday, September 9th, 2011

When some people get breast cancer, they think they have to be the perfect patient. They perform during their journey through breast cancer instead of being a real person with real feelings—some positive but some negative.

In their desire to be the perfect breast cancer patient, they won’t admit they are scared. They think they need to put on a front for everyone, and they pretend to be strong. They won’t cry or sniffle because others might find out they aren’t perfect.

When breast cancer patients live for praise and affirmation at any cost, they deprive themselves of the support, encouragement and hope that others could give them.

If the aim of a breast cancer patient is to be the poster cancer patient of the year, the theatrics lead to an empty lonely life.

I remind breast cancer patients they aren’t robots. I encourage them not only to ask questions and to do research at the library and online, but also to join a cancer support group and to be transparent.

Jackie Fox was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Her doctor said DCIS is very early stage—so early it’s classified as stage 0.

That sounds like good news, but it can become life-threatening if not treated. The treatment is the same as for more aggressive cancers.

Jackie fox wrote the book, From Zero to Mastectomy: What I Learned and You Need to Know about Stage 0 Breast Cancer. She writes with humor, honesty, and gratitude.

Jackie’s book was named Library Journal Best Consumer Health Book of 2010.

Jackie Fox’s book has a phenomenal chapter entitled: What You Need to Know: Interview with My Team. Her family doctor, oncologist, and plastic surgeon answer questions women are likely to ask. Sometimes they use Jackie Fox’s case as an example.

The World’s Wonder Woman finds value in being adored.
The Weak Woman values being pitied.
The Wise Woman takes her value from being loved by the Father (1 John 4:9).

The World’s Wonder Woman acquires things for status.
The Weak Woman hoards things for security.
The Wise Woman receives things for the eventual blessing of sharing (Proverbs 11:25).

The World’s Wonder Woman wants to control the future.
The Weak Woman fears the future.
The Wise Woman trusts God with the future, depending on Him to be a refuge, strength, and help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

The World’s Wonder Woman manipulates people for her gain.
The Weak Woman wants people to meet her neediness.
The Wise Woman gives of herself to others (Proverbs 31:20).

The World’s Wonder Woman resists adversity.
The Weak Woman whines about her adversity.
The Wise Woman looks to God in adversity, giving thanks in all circumstances as helping her grow spiritually (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

The World’s Wonder Woman drops people who offend or oppose her.
The Weak Woman broods over people who offend or oppose her.
The Wise Woman loves people who offend or oppose her, seeking to show that love covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8).

The World’s Wonder Woman hurtles toward her goals.
The Weak Woman gives up on her goals.
The Wise Woman seeks God’s counsel for her goals, then presses on: “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (Philippians 3:12).

The World’s Wonder Woman considers time a commodity in her planner.
The Weak Woman fritters away time.
The Wise Woman invests her time in serving God and gaining a heart of wisdom (Psalms 90:12).

What do you say or do when a loved one has a recurrence of cancer?

First, call or visit the person as soon as possible. Maybe you don’t know what to say. Then say nothing, but during that visit, hug your loved one or hold the person’s hand.

Listen. This person is probably scared and needs you to listen without interruption and judgment. Let your loved one guide the conversation.

Pray for the cancer patient during that call or visit and daily afterward.

Send humorous cards, cartoons, a joke book, or a humorous DVD. Laughter is healing.

If your loved one is going to have chemotherapy, shop together for a new turban or hat. Make it a fun outing.

Provide a support team of friends who can take the cancer patient to and from doctor appointments, the pharmacy, and treatment.

If the cancer patient lives alone, offer to spend the night after chemotherapy treatments, or have the person stay with you.

Take your loved one to a cancer support group.

Never give up hope.

Please pray for George Woods. He is my former radiation therapist. In my book Finding Hope for Your Journey through Breast Cancer, the inspirational reading entitled Giggles, Geniality, and George is about George Woods.

George has brought hope and laughter to hundreds of cancer patients. He made me laugh every day of radiation treatment with stories of his childhood antics. He teased me, and I teased him back.

George has been diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma. Will you join me in prayer for him?

The world needs George and more people like him.
