CS 632: Advanced Database Management Systems

The course will be based primarily on research papers covering the following topics.

Advanced query optimization: Volcano/Cascades framework for query optimization; multi-query optimization, materialized views and view maintenance, index and view selection, database tuning. Adaptive query processing and optimization. Query processing on RDF data. Transaction and query processing on main-memory and columnar databases.

Big data management: transaction and query processing on parallel and distributed databases including issues of availability, replication, consistency, concurrency control, and recovery.

Other topics, such as: data streams and stream management systems. Information retrieval and databases. Handling uncertain and precise data. Security and privacy. Crowd-sourced databases, applications of declarative querying outside of database applications.
