Title: Resource Management and Scalable Security in the Cloud
Sundaresan Rajasekaran, The George Washington University
Date & Time: January 27, 2017 15:30
Venue: CSE Conference Room, First floor Kanwal Rekhi Building
Moving computing to the cloud has become ubiquitous. Ranging from the computations performed on data from smallest internet-of-things we use on a regular basis in our household to large scale servers performing massive operations, all have moved to the cloud. On one hand, cloud service providers should be able to utilize all of their resources efficiently in order to make profits, but on the other hand, the services and the infrastructure must be secure. I will first explore how we can safely increase the resource utilization of the datacenter. I will discuss the key challenges in having to efficiently utilize the spare resources and show how we improve the performance by utilizing the datacenter resources such as CPU and Disk efficiently. Then I will focus on how we can provide scalable security to the Virtual Machines that run on the cloud. In particular, we will look into techniques to mitigate memory based attacks in the cloud.
Speaker Profile:
Sundaresan Rajasekaran is a final year Ph.D. student at The George Washington University. His research focus is on virtual machines and operating systems, combining a deep understanding of resource management in the cloud and systems security issues with expertise in developing systems with real-world impact. He has designed systems that: 1. improve the performance in datacenter by utilizing all of the resources available efficiently, and 2. provide tight and scalable security to the Virtual Machines that run on the cloud. He has developed several prototypes of his research ideas, evaluated its feasibility and implemented full systems that run on production servers. He has experience in commercializing those systems into products, including participating in the National Science Foundation I-Corps program that seeks to turn research ideas into startups. His research works are listed at http://dblp.uni-trier.de/pers/hd/r/Rajasekaran:Sundaresan and the corresponding system implementations can be seen at https://github.com/SunnyRaj.
