Title: The Artificial Intelligence Revolution in Autonomous Driving, and the Re-Invention of the Automotive Industry
Mr. Vijay Nadkarni, Visteon Corporation
Date & Time: September 8, 2017 17:30
Venue: F. C. Kohli Auditorium, 01st Floor, B Block, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Kanwal Rekhi (KReSIT) Building
Artificial Intelligence is enabling a profound and revolutionary transformation in the automotive industry. Long known for “bigger-better-faster” evolution, the auto industry will witness greater technological advancements in the next decade than it has in the previous century. The two big domains emerging in this industry are autonomous driving and infotainment, both of which require a connected-car cloud. In autonomous driving, there are two AI-based technologies, object classification by which the vehicle obtains an awareness of its environment, and vehicular path planning by which the car performs sophisticated roadway maneuvers to travel to its destination. In the infotainment domain, the primary motivation is to enable a superior and delightful in-car experience by way of semantic personal assistance, contextual recommendations, driver productivity and driver engagement. This lecture will cover a small assortment of use cases for these two domains, and take a look at specific AI technologies that are used for addressing them, notably convolutional neural networks, reinforcement learning, recurrent neural networks and natural language processing. This is a technical session targeted toward those who are interested in learning about the advent of Deep Learning in the automotive industry.
Speaker Profile:
Vijay Nadkarni is the global head of Artificial Intelligence at Visteon Corporation, developing deep learning technologies for its autonomous driving and infotainment product lines. He believes that AI is the industry’s next giant movement, and that the automotive sector will be one of the largest markets to be transformed in the coming decade. A veteran of Silicon Valley, Vijay has founded multiple startups, of which Veraz Networks, a VoIP company, went public. Earlier in his career, Vijay initiated and headed the VoIP business unit at US Robotics (acquired by 3Com), prior to which he was a lead architect for Motorola’s first CDMA cellular switch. Vijay’s first startup was Perceptronix, an AI company doing signature recognition and OCR. An avid deep learning hobbyist, Vijay is energized when he sees innovative AI projects. Vijay did his BTech in Electrical Engineering from IIT-Bombay and has an MS in EE and MBA, both from Northwestern University.
