Dr. Anu Gokhale, Professor of Electronics and Tele, Department of Technology, Illinois State Universit
Date & Time: December 16, 2002 11:30
Venue: CSE Dept. Seminar Hall
Abstract:
The seminar will outline some of Dr. Anu Gokhale's research projects that were funded by external grants. The most recent grant is from the National Science Foundation, USA, and has funded a project designed to promote female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). A USIA grant that is concluding in May 2003, has established a Center for Urban Environment (CUE) in Navi Mumbai. Another NSF grant that focuses on Articulation is under review. My research focuses on strategies to enhance critical thinking skills of students. Through several studies, I have found that discovery learning when experiential activities occur prior to lecture promotes critical thinking. Also, collaborative learning is effective in increasing problem-solving skills of students. Distance-learning technologies offer fresh avenues for cross-country faculty and/or student collaboration and promote intercultural understanding. There are opportunities for collaborative research in a variety of fields, which will be discussed in details during the seminar. For more information about the talk, contact varsha@cse.iitb.ac.in.
Speaker Profile:
The speaker is a Professor of Electronics and Telecommunications in the Department of Technology, Illinois State University, USA. She is here on a Fulbright scholarship, one goal of which is to study the effectiveness of instructional techniques practiced in India versus the U.S. to enhance higher-order thinking skills of students.
