The internet is making a huge impact by bridging geographic barriers and enabling new businesses. Yet, large sections of the society, particularly the rural folk, remain untouched primarily because they do not have access to the huge knowledge base acquired by scientific development. One of the big barriers is the lack of content relevant to their needs, in their own language and delivered in a form that is of immediate use to them. Keeping these factors and the needs of Indian rural users in mind, researchers at the Developmental Informatics Lab, at IIT Bombay, have been developing tools and techniques for content creation, dissemination and search. These have led to field deployed artifacts -- that incorporate innovations in database query processing and caching, cross-lingual information storage and retrieval and human-computer interaction – for providing expert assistance in identifying and addressing farmers’ problems through farmer-farmer and farmer-expert interactions. This talk will narrate the challenging yet exciting story of the effects (a) of laboratory research and development on the field and (b) of feedback from the field on research and development in the laboratory.
