Embedded Systems used in Safety Critical and Mission Critical Applications of LCA

Indian Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) consists of state of the art embedded subsystems which are connected through high speed MIL-STD-1553B data link for data communication. These embedded systems are used for aircraft flight control and engine control applications, pilot communications requirement, aircraft fuel management, aircraft brake management, failure management and indication systems and other utility management systems. Embedded systems in LCA are classified as safety critical and mission critical systems. In this lecture safety critical and mission critical systems of LCA are discussed. Technology challenges encountered during the development of one of the safety critical systems i.e Digital Flight Control Computer (DFCC) will be enumerated. Similarly Control and Coding Unit (CCU) which is a mission critical system of LCA will also be deliberated during this lecture. Issues related to requirement specification, design, development and testing of DFCC hardware will be explained followed by reliable software development process employed for safety critical and mission critical embedded systems. Also software design issues and Real time executive structure, Built In Tests (BIT) will be discussed. Different phases of embedded system testing for this class of safety critical software will also be dealt with. Importance of Configuration Management, Software Quality Assurance and Independent V&V aspects will be explained. Finally, the future plan to keep pace with the latest technology will also be discussed.
