Challenges and Opportunities in Next Generation Storage Systems
Brian Pawlowski, Vice President & Chief Technology Officer, Network Appliance, Inc.
Date & Time: November 22, 2007 10:00
Venue: SIC 301, ā€˜Cā€™ Block, 03rd floor, Kanwal Rekhi Building
At Network Appliance we have an approach called the "Three C's" for understanding areas where innovation can arise: Customers, Competition and technology Curves. Data center economics covering the shifting equation of hardware costs due to rapid commoditization with the rapid uptake of clustered application deployments are fighting with utility costs related to power and cooling. Thorwing gasoline on the fire is the introduction of ubiquitous low cost application virtualization. Conditions are ripe for not only fresh thinking in terms of storage products that match the emerging capabilities of next generation data centers, but for fruitful collaboration between industry and academia in areas of analytics, models, policy driven load management, rapid lightweight provisioning, availability and resiliency, and new paradigms for managing storage. This talk will touch on particularly fruitful areas needing investigation - using customer requirements and problems and technology curves to motivate the discussion.
