Title: Active Relevance Feedback Algorithms for Information Retrieval

The talk will highlight some of our recent work in information retrieval, relevance feedback, and active learning. We consider both Dirichlet Compound Multinomial models and Bayesian logistic regression. The industrial context is research with Delphi, NASA, IBM, Cisco, Microsoft, and other firms.
Speaker Profile:

Prof. Ram Akella is currently Professor and Director of Knowledge, Information Systems and Technology Management at the University of California at Silicon Valley Center/Santa Cruz. Prof. Akella started his academic career as a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard and then joined MIT (EECS/LIDS and the Leaders for Manufacturing Program) as a Postdoctoral Associate. He then joined Carnegie Mellon University in 1985 as an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Industrial Administration and the School of Computer Science (Robotics Institute) before moving on to Berkeley, Stanford, and establishing a SUNY Global Enterprise Management Center for Excellence as Founding Director.

Professor Akella received the Ph.D. in Systems from the School of Automation, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and a B.Tech. in Electronics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He has received several awards including the IBM Faculty Award, the AMD Research Award, and the KLA Award.
