Title: Developing ICT Skills in Ethiopia

Degree students who undergo vocational training in computing, as well as trainee teachers, join universities and colleges in Ethiopia, often with little or no prior exposure to technologies such as mobile phones or computers. Distinctive models (compared to those used in other parts of the world) are a required to help understanding of basic ICT skills learning in this context. A developmental model of basic ICT skills acquisition for trainee teachers will be presented.

A Computing Curriculum Change Process is underway for vocational computing first degree programmes. This aims of this process will be summarised and a status report presented.

Speaker Profile:

Julian Bass is Information Technology Advisor to Debre Birhan University in Ethiopia. He co-authored the National Computing Benchmark for first degrees now in use in the country.

Previously Dr Bass was worldwide customer Training Manager for a silicon valley-based enterprise CRM vendor and lecturer in the UK Universities of Sheffield and Bangor. He has co-authored nearly 50 journal articles and conference papers and his research interests include ICT for development, software development methodologies and hard real-time software systems engineering.
