Title: Walking on the Cloud: Programming Models for Scalable Distributed Applications
Dr. Kapil Vaswani, Microsoft Research India
Date & Time: September 7, 2011 15:00
Venue: F. C. Kohli Auditorium, 01st floor, Dept. of CSE, Kanwal Rekhi Bldg.
Building distributed applications that scale seamlessly requires adopting idioms such as data replication and partitioning. While these idioms achieve scale, they expose programmers to the pitfalls of distribution such as data consistency, asynchrony and failures. In this talk, I will motivate the need for new programming models that address these challenges. I will then describe CScale, a simple programming model for building scalable and robust distributed applications. CScale allows programmers to specify the core logic of the application declaratively without worrying about distribution. CScale programs have simple, sequential semantics which greatly simplifies reasoning about correctness. CScale automatically manage the execution of CScale programs on large clusters, handling issues such as replication, partitioning and fault tolerance.
